The Nintendo 64 rocks! While some say it "lost" to the Play station I say that it revolutionized gaming by being the first system to nail 3D gaming and really proved to be a successful system due to Nintendo’s already well established franchises and excellent games from 3rd party developers (especially from Rare). Thats why I'm collecting games for this system while most of the games are still fairly cheap. I love the 64! Edited by Ross R., Apr 5 2010, 09:02 PM.

Nintendo 64! I just remember going to Hollywood Video (then when it got GameCrazy) and renting Paper Mario, Star Wars: Battle for Naboo, among other games. It was a good time for me, and when I was supposed to be cleaning I'd play Dr. Mario 64. |

How was it the first to nail 3D gaming? In what vacuum did you live in during this era? PS1 has far more good 3d games. I put more hours into the n64 than probably any system I've ever owned and I can count the games I enjoyed on my hands and toes. I voted SNES. My second would be the Gamecube. |

I will always love my gamecube! My n64 was cool, and I never had a SNES, but gamecube was when I really started to get into gaming. I still play it as often as possible. |

While I love the Super Nintendo and it had some truly great titles, I had to go with the Nintendo 64 on this one. The amount of truly great games is undeniable and almost all series that had a game on this console improved and majority of the series that this console started were truly fantastic. I'm sorry to all the NES/SNES/GCN fans out there, but I'd take Majora's Mask, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Banjo Kazooie, Ocarina of Time, Diddy Kong Racing, and Paper Mario over any other six games you could throw at me. I am not sure "almost all series that had a game on this console improved" can back up the idea that "the amount of truly great games is undeniable." In fact, the N64 didn't have a very big amount of truely great games at all. In fact it was the 2nd biggest failure in Nintendo's history, right behind the Gamecube. I'd even go on to say the Nintendo 64 doesn't even have a very large library at all(~300 North American games and ~75 of those are sports games). Tell me where your statement makes sense? Just because you can go out and re-live your child hood for the price of a happy meal doesn't negate the fact that this system has issues with its libraries. It has good games for sure, but not enough to say it is undeniable. You could have all the good games on the system, cart only, for around a hundred bucks. It is a hot damn good bargain today... but that would have been the course of 4-5 years and over a thousand bucks when it was new. |

Well, I don't necessarily think that a system should be rated by it's library or by it's price, but more on the quality of the games and the amount of fun you can have with them. For me, the N64 easily surpasses all other systems, in terms of general fun. I've gone back and replayed more N64 games than I have actually played GameCube games. When I look at the N64's list of games, I think undeniable just based on the sheer amount of success the console gave to majority of it's series. Banjo Kazooie was spawned and created an immensely popular, best-selling, critically acclaimed series. Mario Kart 64, to most, is considered the best of the series and was the driving force for it's early fan base and helped create what it was today. Goldeneye 007 is considered one of the greatest FPS games of all time and is regarded, along with Doom, as one of the most influential games to all FPS (which is huge, considering the market of FPS games nowadays.) Ocarina of Time, while it may be overrated in the minds of some, is one of the highest rated games of all time and was revolutionary for it's time, stapling so much into the Zelda series that will probably still be present in Skyward Sword. The entire Mario Party Franchise was started which was a major hit, all the way up until around the 6th or 7th game. Starfox 64 is probably the only reason why Starfox is as popular as it is and is undoubtedly the best in the series. And last but not least, you have Super Mario 64 which is again, one of the most popular games across any console there is. Granted the NES and SNES did start a lot of series and had tons of great games, there is no denying that. However, it is undeniable the influence the N64 had on gaming as a whole. There are plenty of other fantastic titles on the N64 as well, but those are some of the ones that I believe, definitely help support me in saying the N64's library was undeniably great. |

Fact: Ocarina of Time was not made in a vacuum. Crash Bandicoot, Spiro the Dragon and Gex: Enter the Gecko were in development at the same time as OoT. How, again, is OoT revolutionary? Fact: Doom, Hexen, Decent, Star Wars: Dark Forces, Duke Nukem 3D, Half Life, Counter Strike, Starsiege: Tribes, Battle Field 1942 and Unreal had far more influence on FPS than Golden Eye. Golden eye is only influential on the console segment, and it squarely revolves around the multi-player success. There were easily better FPS titles on the console if you single player... some found right there on the N64 *cough* Shadows of the Empire *cough* Fact: Nintendo 64 sold ~12 more million units than the Gamecube. Yet it has 300 games less than the Cube. And of the existing libraries, the Gamecube has more universally liked games than the 64. The 64 has ~25 good games noone can every deny are univerally liked. That doesn't mean the library was great. 25 good games does not a great library make. If so, then the only system that doesn't have a great library is the Atari Jaguar. One's personal N64 library can be great, but not the Nintendo's 64. It just wasn't true if you apply the same standards to it that you would any other system. Now I appreciate you like the N64. I can remember my college years fondly. Killer Instinct Gold, FZero, Nightmare Creatures, Golden Eye, Perfect Dark, Army Men, Banjo, Star Fox 64. I spent hours playing that sucker. But I'd never say it's library was great... cause as a whole... it wasn't. And the games that were good were not great in the context of being better than any other console's games at the time. I had a PS1 as well. I paid for all my games and game rentals from my after school job. The opportunity costs on the N64 were high and the chances of a bad game was high (StarCraft 64 anyone?). It is only today we can get the games for the price of a latte and relive our youth. Edited by hooflung128, Jul 7 2010, 12:46 AM.
