Okay, so there is a website now that grades video games (http://www.vggrader.com/) based on a 100 point scale and I was just wondering what everybody thought about it or have ever even heard about it. I think it is a pretty neat idea and while doing some searching on ebay, I found that a sealed copy of Super Mario 64 graded 95 mint went for $1000!! Do the search sometime, I couldn't believe my eyes. Just want to hear thoughts about it.

Thanks

As much as your comment is appreciated, would you mind elaborating a bit. If that is all you came up with, that is fine.

I would love to go into detail I just didn't want to sit here and type till I'm blue in the face for nobody to read it, but now that you asked Ill gladly do it.

Grading something to increase its value is fine...I got many sports cards graded, Coins and paper money is fine and dandy. But a video game is just that...a game. Grading a game could do 1 of 2 things...1, it could seriously lower the costs of games since everybody would rush to buy sealed games...which I don't mind ill gladly take that. Secondly it could seriously increase the value of games because they could branch off into just boxed copies of games not just sealed...now that I wouldn't be fine with. It would be good for sellers but not buyers like me...especially since I don't have a lot of money to begin with its hard enough as it is I don't want to see them double in price. The video game hobby is different then the sports card hobby. Video games are more like a passion then a hobby, we collect video games because we love playing them right? we love to just blow a whole Saturday playing our favorite Super Nintendo game or our favorite Dreamcast game. Grading a game would turn this passion into a business and an investment. Its just another way for some company to take money away from people and fatten their always fat pockets. Why pay $1000 for a sealed graded super mario 64 when you can take that money and buy almost the whole library of N64 games boxed and have the ability to actually play them? now I know, people who have sealed games have a non-sealed game to play but still...you can do so much more with that $1000 then blow it on a graded copy of an N64 game.

I agree that games would seriously increase in value if this were to catch on which I do not likely see will happen. But on the other hand, games like Super Mario 64 can be downloaded so anybody who seriously wants to play could always go the virtual console pending he/she has a Wii. For these reasons, some of the serious collectors who want a sealed copy of lets say there favorite game of all time from a collectible standpoint this would give them the ability to get exactly what they are looking for because the grade is definite. If they were to look for a sealed copy on ebay, who knows if you can really trust what the seller says. One person can say mint, while the other might not agree. This is a benefit of grading video games. But all the points you make are good!

Sorry, but what is grading?
essentialy some "experts" take a look at a game in its cosmetic condition and grade it based upon condition. Have a sealed game but the corner is bend a centimeter? thats some points taken off its overall score. In the end after they look at everything (fading, bends, crease, dent, whatever else they look at) and give it an overall "grade" based out of 100.

I really dont have an opinion on this yet... I mean it seems quite crazy to pay a ton more just because it has been graded by this website...if you want my opinion that SM64 graded at 95 was probably bid up by people who work for the grading company, to attract more customers and make it appear like their grading service makes the value of your games go sky high.

Yes, but it is all but impossible to find that game sealed anymore. Do you think grading will catch on?

Not sure, but it is definitely something they may have a chance. There are many collectors who have games sealed up from past generations of systems that may just want to preserve their investments.

Game grading will only catch on in collectors who are really into collecting sealed games, or people who collect games mainly for profit purposes (they are out there, more and more people are realizing the amount of profit that can be made by holding onto a sealed game for years). I met someone on youtube who says they are collecting sealed panzer dragoon saga's because it will be able to put their kids through college.

Do you have any sealed games? It doesn't seem like you're into the grading but it's still cool to have a sealed copy of your favorite game.

Its a bad idea.

Video games are not like comic or baseball cards..

You can't quantify nostalgia with numbers. People will pay what they pay for something. Anyone that pays that kind of money for an item simply because it has been "graded", in my opinion is missing the point.

Well I don't know how rare Panzer Dragoon Saga is (lol don't flame me =]) but if it was really worth as much as that guy says than that's pretty smart, I mean, if you want to make some easy money, collecting a bunch of sealed copies of some rare games and then years down the road selling them for like 5x or 10x more than you paid for them if pretty smart, but also kind of unfair to the actual collectors that have a passion for games not just trying to make a few bucks. Now I'm not a collector myself for the simple fact it's to expensive for me, although I am interested in buying lot of PS2 games while I can for dirt cheap.

I think this actually would help ppl looking for games.

I mean, if its graded low,it'll b cheap regardless of how the game plays or what it is about

I actually kinda like the concept

It's so hard to keep games that are in cardboard cases (like n64 games) in good condition lol, they scratch, dent, rip etc so easily

These aren't the droids we're looking for.

I think it's wrong. It's just going to make collecting harder for those people with a real passion for it. It'll be on par with resellers at flea markets and swap meets.

And I'm sure someone from the company pushed the bid up on that copy of Super Mario 64.

The whole thing is just... bleh. Makes me sad.
