How is it you feel about the recent state of rpgs? Do you feel they are on the decline? In someways I feel like video game companies struggle the hardest getting rpgs out there. It seems as if more remakes get released here in the states then anything else. I remember growing up in the 90's, and being lucky enough for quality rpgs being released more often. The Playstation and the Playstation 2 I recall had some of my personal favorite rpgs. Anyway, back to my point. How do you feel about the recent state of RPGs? I myself am not saying that quality games do not get released. They do. It's just that I'm not seeing enough of it. I remember being blown away by Dragon Quest 8, yet no one talks about it. I guess the same can be said of Breath of Fire 4, but it does not change the point for me. Where are all the quality RPGS!!! |

Blue Dragon Lost Odyssey Tales of Vesperia Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Eternal Sonata Folklore Monster Hunter 3 Valkyria Chronicles Rune Factory Frontier Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon White Knight Chronicles Baroque Enchanted Arms The Last Remnant Fable II Fallout 3 Final Fantasy XIII Mass Effect Mass Effect 2 Marvel: Ultimate Alliance Star Ocean: The Last Hope This doesn't even include the DS, which has a boat load of RPGs. Persona 4 and Ar Tonelico II are two quality RPGs on the Playstation 2 that just came out recently, and I really enjoyed Persona 4 alot (I spent 60 hours playing the game in 5 days...) |

I think Rpgs are on the decline. The 360 and Wii are putting out some stinkers like Operation Darkness, etc. But there are still companies out there that are still satisfying hardcore RPG fans needs like Atlus and Square. I think that due to lack of multiplayer on most RPGs, they are becoming less marketable to the modern generation of gamers. Its sad but probably true. |

I feel like the game companies have been making RPGs overly complicated recently. I would rather they focus on a rich storyline than a complicated skill system. |

Jrpgs are really lacking innovation on consoles. You will see a lot of tweaks to decades old formulas but generally I think games that try new things like Valkyria Chronicles and Resonance of Fate end up with low sales and forgotten by developers as quality world wide releases. Then in the west you games like Skyrim that seriously lack compelling gameplay but offer a sandbox so people invested in the IP forgive utterly trash game mechanics. Kingdoms of Amular is like the exact opposite of Skyrim... Great gameplay with a problem with story and immersion. And then there is the shining light of RPGS... The Souls series. It gets everything right but has a barrier to entry... Patience. Honestly RPGs are in a weird place right now. There is no lack of titles but there can be a lack of innovation. But that is highly subjective on being a positive or negative. |

I noticed this thread originated 4-5 years ago but it's kind of laughable. Their are TONS of great RPGS out now between the PSP, DS, and PS3...and while the Wii and 360 don't have many; the ones they do have are pretty spectacular. Also if you are not afraid to learn some Japanese their are a quite a good many more to import on the DS,PSP, and PS3 with no region locks. I'm so tired of the RPG's are stale complaint. If they innovate people complain the changes are too drastic and if the game is 'traditional' it's their not being innovative enough. Some people just like to bitch and moan and are never happy. So many great RPG titles are out right now and if you don't enjoy them then that's on you (the individual and no one specific here)and maybe you just don't like the genre period as much as you once did. But the great games DO exist and their are plenty of posts here listing them. |

The JRPG genre has basically moved to handhelds for the most part. It is very rare to see a full fledged title on consoles these days and most NIS games don't really count. It's very difficult for these smaller developers to get the funds to create a massive HD console RPG. Even a company like Atlus has waited until the end of this console generation to release Persona 5. I'm actually really anticipating Bravely Default. I am craving a traditional JRPG and everyone is saying this game is basically a final fantasy. I'm playing Etrian Odyssey IV and enjoying it so far. It is an extremely polished take on a very old genre. I think companies are realizing that JRPGs are worth making because there is a small but loyal following. Release a collector's edition and it will pretty much sell out and increase profit margins and it is a steady business. It took a while to get going this generation, but companies had to realize it wasn't just about the huge budget titles and profit. There are other ways to run a business and Atlus is a great example of that (their parent company went out of business not them). |

NIS games most definitely count sir. I love them. Yes they are quirky, different, and simplistic but that doesn't mean they are not true JRPG's. They are solid fun games IMHO. |

Nis games do count. The problem is they are iterative lacking a lot new ideas. The ones that do offer mash ups or outright new mechanics just don't sell units en masse. I probably have more Nis titles on the ps3 than capcom and Konkani combined with more on my radar for 2014. |

We should see Zelda for the WIIU and Witcher 3:wild hunt for Xbox/ps4 I believe next year some time. I too have been disappointed with the lack of RPG games these day. I am disappointed xbox1 had no RPG's at release date! Hopefully we see some much needed titles on next gen consoles soon |

Damn necroers lol If you believe this, your looking at the wrong place. Most of my favorite RPG's came out in the past 10 years. The rainfall movement gave us 3 great rpg's and the ps3 consistently chunks out great rpg's. There are also alot of great ones on handhelds, like twewy, ys, persona, etc. Personally, i've never been able to play a long rpg on a console... so the fact that rpg's are predominately handhelds makes me happy. |

That's the rub and what I was meaning before. If games come out that stay true to the classic JRPG form the they are perceived as unwanted rehashes with nothing new to offer....yet games like Valkyrie Chronicles I-III and Resonance of Fate are 'too out there man'. It's like the mass people can't be satisfied so what are the developers to do?? They make something different and it doesn't sell well. They make something traditional and everyone goes 'meh been there done that'. It's ridiculous. All I know is that just on my personal to buy/own lists for RPG's this recent gen I have about 50 DS, 50 PSP, and 50 PS3/360/Wii RPG's that I want in total about 40-50% of which I have already. That's 150 RPGS's (including some JP imports) for this past gen. These are not junk games either. It's 150 RPG games that got 8/10 ratings or higher from critics and gamers alike. So the notion that great RPG's don't exist anymore is completely misguided and outright false. Edited by stratamaster78, Dec 29 2013, 08:35 PM.

I agree. The problem leaks into other genre's too. Look at Nier. |

OMG dude you just don't know how much I LOVE NIER!!! I actually consider it an Action RPG quasi Hack-n-Slash of sorts even though it blends so many different genre's together in blissful fashion. I found out about it early on from my good friend Retrosnow/Snocone3 if you ever watched his channel on YT. He was telling me on skype one day how awesome it was so I bought it and got sucked in major. I put probably 150+ hrs in it counting all the N+ endings. It's a dang shame it doesn't get more recognition and probably didn't sell well. I know it got mixed reviews when I'd give it somewhere between a 9-10 out of 10!! Side note if you didn't know this...Drakengard on the PS2 ties into NIER storyline wise through one of the endings(of Drakengard). It's the 5th ending I believe. But if you love NIER like I do I strongly recommend Drakengard 1 and 2 on the PS2. But yeah NIER is a perfect example of what we are talking about with innovative games. |

I love Nier and Drakengard. I love games with that dark tone. It reminds me of Vagrant Story. Another game that changed the formula up and didn't really catch on. |

... your in a pretty niche gaming forum and you don't know what RPG is? It stands for Role playing game.... a quick google could have told you that. You role play (act as) a charecter in a game. They usually have turn based gameplay and intricate stories. Edited by RockmanDash12, Dec 30 2013, 02:16 AM.
