I know there's a Poll in the youtube discussion area, but I think an official Music survey thread was due.

I'm aware alot of people here are going to vote Metal / Rock, but keep this in mind (since I didn't add 'rock' in the selection);

Top 40 / Mainstream Rock would include Staind, Green Day, Disturbed, Nickelback, U2, Three Days Grace
-Even though most of these could fit other genres, they're played in the radio enough to be identified in this category.

Metal / Hard Rock / Old School Rock would include anything psychedelic, progressive like Rush, Tool, Pink Floyd, X Japan, Porcupine Tree to Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Metallica, The Beatles to generally anything rooting to Black Sabbath

Alternative / Indie Rock would include pixies, R.E.M, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Bright Eyes, My Bloody Valentine, Yeah Yeah Yeah's and anything else, anything rooted to or connected to or between these artists.
-Most these artists I've mentioned are the better known ones, so don't shoot me with a bullet for not mentioning more obscure artists.
-Post-hardcore and emo music are derivatives of indie, alternative. Unless you like Fall Out Boy, which is mainstream.

The rest, I think, is more self-explainatory. World Music is more of a cultural thing, for anyone whose into Arabic, Caribbean music, or anything else for that matter.

*also*

Nu Metal, Deathcore, grindcore and metalcore are all derivatives of metal. Sorry Slipknot antipaths. Proof of this is alot of bands' influence from Celtic Frost, Metallica, In Flames and Death.

Alternative/Indie would have to be my favorite, but I'm also a fan of Metal/Hard Rock.

I think the reason its not on the list is that most people in North American have never heard of drum and bass or dubstep.

huh? if this is because i said i said something about people from North America not knowing about drum and bass its because I AM American and I didnt know about drum and bass until I went to Europe. wasnt trying to insult or anything. And as for what anyone thinks of the music i listen to i could really care less. I listen to it because I like it, not because I care what others think of it, although to be fair Black Flag and The Descendents are hardly mainstream lol

Hmm. Let's see. I can appreciate some music in every genre.

As far as a favorite genre goes it is probably rock. I use that as a very general term because I like all kinds of rock.

I've always liked classic rock. I was born and raised on Boston, so that's one of my favorite bands. I love all kinds of classic rock from the 50's (like Bill Haley) to the 80's (like Whitesnake, Scorpion, and Foreigner). I guess you could say I'm not a fan of the whole psychadelic stuff outside of Pink Floyd, but other than that I pretty much like all classic rock.

In middle school I was a huge Alternative fan. It's still a part of my musical taste. I was a massive AFI fan, and can still appreciate
about three albums worth of their music. Being an AFI fan drew me to other parts of the Alternative genre such as Aidan.

Punk rock is probably my favorite sub-genre of rock. I love the old school stuff like The Ramones and Dead Kennedys and the newer mainstream stuff such as Blink 182, Pixies, and the Donnas(That's right the Donnas get over it). Yes I consider Blink 182 punk, maybe you don't but I do.

Screamo is pretty good as long as the music backing it up is good. I don't care if the vocalist is screaming or singing as long as the music is good. My favorite band in this genre is Escape the Fate. The new stuff. This genre has some of my favorite songs in it. It's hard to explain but my favorite layout of a song in the screamo genre sounds like this. It is hard to explain but I really like a solo at the beginning then a driving metal feel then maybe an acoustic part.

I wasn't a huge metal fan until I started playing guitar. Then I got into Pantera and Dio and all that stuff. Now I like pretty much like all metal except Trivium(don't ask me why.) Now I'm into pretty much all kinds of it, especially power metal type stuff and some folk metal. My favorites in those genres would be Blind Guardian and Sonata Arctica.

I'm not a big reggae fan, but I really like the chord structures of most reggae songs.

Although I don't really like reggae, I do like Ska which is part reggae and part punk and part surf. My favorites in that genre are Reel Big Fish, Five Iron Frenzy, and Mighty Mighty Boss Tones.

I do like music outside of rock and its subgenres. I don't listen to Pop that much, but I do like a lot of it. My favorite pop artist of all time is Cyndi Lauper. Call it girly or whatever but I have loved her music ever since she did "The Goonies R Good Enough" for the Goonies movie.

As far as rap goes, I only like rappers who don't take themselves seriously and think that they are God's gift to man like Kanye West and 50 Cent do. Best example I can think of for this is Afroman.

I like any video game music that I enjoy to hear while playing the game. Persona 4 is the best example.

There are many many genres that I missed and I left out most of my favorite bands( and I have tons of them). But that is the basic gist of my musical taste. I don't hate any genre and I love almost all music in general.

I Love everything from Slayer to Emily Remler to Booker T and the MG's all the way back to suffocation and Cannibal Corpse.

Im not so keen on bands like (IMO) the truly awful Korn. Never did like em...never will.

Also listen to game soundtracks...yep, im sad.

Toejam and earl 2 on the genesis...it's far too good.

FF9 has some really great songs and capture some of the cinematics perfectly.
I Find FF7 more memorable though. Cosmo canyon is an awesome piece of music.

No, it definitely doesn't have anything to about Drum and Bass because I am an American, and totally ignorant that such a genre ever existed. Stereotypically, the metal community will frown upon metal acts such as Hatebreed, Cradle of Filth, HIM, Bleeding Through or All that Remains.

Where as you've mentioned a couple of artists that belong to another whole genre, the rest of the bands are considered traditional metal (such as black, heavy, doom, death, power, etcetera) which alot of metal enthusiasts would raise horns for.
