I love a lot of single player games. I sometimes rather play single player than multiplayer.

Demon's Souls (although you can play with someone), Valkyria Chronicles, Tales of Vesperia, Mass Effect 2, Assassin's Creed 2, Jet Set Radio Future, Brave Fencer Musashi, LittleBigPlanet etc.

Games back then, didn't have online multiplayer and I enjoyed them so much. I'm sure a lot of people did too.
I enjoyed them too.

As i have got older my priorities have changed, I would consider myself a gamer even though I have bought a lot of games for the multi-player. The first i can remember being Micro Machines 2 of the Sega Megadrive/Genesis with up to eight players at once!

As I was saying earlier, being a bit older changes things. The older i get, the harder it is to find time to play with my friends. The only way I can find time to do this is online. I don't see it as a bad thing to play with your friends and i have bought games with the sole purpose to do so.

depends on the game for example i would not buy call of duty without multiplayer but a game like splinter cell without multiplayer i would still buy. so it really depends on the game for me

Yes, I would still buy a game... Although I play online alot I much prefer the single player in a game, Oblivion, Assassins Creed 2 and Fallout 3 are examples of games that are alot of fun without the online feature and they prove that you can still have a fun and exciting game without online.

Buy them all the time. I will admit though that I buy shooters for the multiplayer mostly.

This is true Assassin's Creed II and Fallout 3 are a lot of fun. I own them both and enjoy them whenever I play them.

Well it all depends on what I want out of the game. Gears of War is so much fun to play Co-Op. Resident Evil 5 Co-op is too I hear. I have several games that my friend in Alabama play or have plans on playing through as Co-op.

But you'll find me hard pressed to purchase a game for online deathmatch. I've played my ass off in DM on the PC since Quake 1. I'll play Halo 3 Coop, and putz around some modes but I don't buy a game for that on the console.

I'm going to say this as nicely as possible: A "gamer" whom buys a game for the sole purpose of playing the online is not a gamer. Seriously, that's like saying "Let's ignore what made people like the game in the first place, and head on into what makes it JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER game on the market!"
So you're saying anyone who likes to play MAG or Socom Confrontation is not a gamer? Comon, a gamer is anyone who plays and enjoys games of any genre, on any system, online, offline, anything. I don't like FPS SP at all, in fact I hate them (although BFBC2 seems awesome from the first few levels). I bought COD4 solely for the online, I bought WAW simply for the online, I bought KZ2 just for the online, I bought Socom, MAG, BFBC2, Resistance 2, BFBC, Gears of War 1 and 2, L4D2, and some other games ONLY for the online. Sure I played and beat some of the SP campaigns, but that was an afterthought and I didn't really enjoy most of them.

What Jonny defines as gamer, to me, is someone who respects the hobby. It is a bit knee-jerk to say online gamers aren't gamers but I do think think console gamers who play online have been given far too much attention.

There aren't enough variations in gameplay in the next generation consoles because many are running the same bloody game engine. RAGE, Unreal 3, Unreal 2.5, MT Framework and a few others.

At what point does the armchair general have to admit to themselves that online components all depend on a game universe, story line and offline mode before online competition games start to all blend together and turn into uninspired franchise milking.

This is why story-mode Coop is turning into the prize pony of online console gaming. 3 weeks into an online only, or short single player campaign game + multi is the pearl in the oyster. You aren't going to get a better experience out of the game because it depends on Immersion breaking HUMANS. After the new wears off people tend to just try to break the immersion of other players instead of offering quality game experience. They'll withhold that until they get their friends online.

I'm a big fan of online gaming, and I find that when I buy single player games, I tend to forget I have them and never really play them much, so it's definitely something I look at when buying games nowadays. Of course, it never mattered to me before online gaming became such a big deal!

I don't care about multiplayer, except in one-on-one fighting games like Street Fighter 2. Otherwise I don't care. So it has no influence.

I have dabbled in multiplayer on occasion, but I largely prefer single-player games where I can pick them up and enjoy them at my own pace, rather than having to wait for friends to come online or play with strangers. I like to take my time and get sucked into the story of a game, whereas multiplayer is more about team objectives and short missions, which do not really interest me. I have also found online multiplayer to be incredibly frustrating at times due to lag and rude kids who make the experience miserable for others.

Don't get me wrong, multiplayer is obviously important for some people, but I hate it when some game developers focus so much on the multiplayer that the single player experience feels tacked on. It should be a balance between the two so that both sides don't feel left out. Mind you, many gamers I know have the attitude that games should be made with multiplayer or not made at all.

So to answer the question, I would by a game without online options without reservation. I love social gaming, but strictly focusing on multiplayer does not a good game make!

I do not base buying a game on online features, doing so will greatly diminish hundreds of great games that do not have any online features. I agree with broland1 I have more fun with single player games, I need a good story.
