Some good suggestions so far. The Tales series is always pretty user friendly and the same goes for Eternal Sonata for action rpgs. If you want a great beginners turned-based rpg I would pick up Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door for the Gamecube (can be played on the Wii)...fun and easy combat with a humorous story...definitely one of the best games for any RPG fan :)

I'm no RPG expert but since you are new to the genre you might want to start off with action RPG's. I would start with any of the Paper Mario games, Kingdom Hearts and Tales of Symphonia. Let us know if you want to try out turn based RPGs

Tales of vesperia on the 360 is pro, as well as eternal sonata (it's cheaper on the 360 so go that route) and Valkyria chronicles on the PS3. Looking for something to kinda ease in, check out fable II, or the original if you can track it (it plays on the 360) because the original is better, and it gives more a Western feel to RPG's while not being as over whelming as fallout 3 or oblivion.

I would go for Zelda Ocarina of Time, Virtual Console.
That was my first RPG.

For beginner RPG I would recommend Eternal Sonata which you mentioned, it has a good story, but it's not so intensive that you get lost, it's also pretty linear in dungeons so you're not lost for an hour, the battle system is fun and easy to pick up, the bosses are pretty easy, and the game itself takes just the right amount of time to beat.

I would also suggest Folklore for the PS3 it's often over looked, but it's a solid game, you may find minor issues, but it does take an interesting approach.

I would not recommend Valkyria chronicles for the PS3 for first time RPGers because the system is pretty different than other RPGS that you will face, the learning curve is not TOO bad, but it takes a bit. It almost plays out like an RTS where you move your units around, but you have to take a lot of things into consideration, there is a vast amount of characters, and they implemented a system where some characters don't get along with others which in turn makes them have poor attacks and what not in the battle.

As everyone mentioned Tales is a good route, Vesperia is a very long RPG, the boss battles pose a bit of a challenge, but the fighting system is really easy to pick up, great story, great characters, really nice voice work.
I would also think about picking up the guide for it if you are interested in side missions and goodies.

Well if your PS3 is the backwards compatible one, why not try to find the RPG that got most Americans hooked on RPGs in the first place? Final Fantasy 7! ;)

I dont know if you would try PC RPGs but I ave 2 good reccomendations. Fallout 1 and 2. 2 of my favorite RPGS ever made. You said you wanted some thing different, so why not go with the 2 games that basically broke the stale RPG mold. They took RPGs out of the dungeons and battling skeletons to a post apocalyptic wasteland with mutants, giant scorpions and guns.

The graphics are a little dated but they have a good quality to them IMO. Its easy on the eyes. But the graphics arent what makes Fallout 1 and 2 great games. Its the character creation, storyline, attention to detail in everything in the game world. It might seem kind of tough at first but if you stick with it and maybe experiment some you may enjoy them.

That is if you havent played them already.

Also if your a star wars fan I highly reccomend Kotors 1 and 2.

even tough it is a old game series for Pc i just cant help but say.

If you can, try to look for Baldurs Gate compilation from Atari, the one that has Baldurs Gate 1 & the Tales of the Sword Coast, and Baldurs Bate 2 Shadow's of Amn and its expansion, Throne of Baal, or any of these games separately,

they might be even a littlebit better than Fallouts 1 & 2 when talking abaut role playing, but its a hard call as i love all games from these series that are released for Pc.

they have a good story, good character building, good npc and world desing based upon the forgotten realms, plus the gameplay is quite easy to learn, even tough of course the craphics will be from 90's and as it is dungeons and dragons rule based, if you have ever played actual Pen & Paper role game youll know what the numbers discribet on weapons, as damage like 2d4 and so on, means, but its easy to understand once you get used to it, and you really dont need to even pay attension to small things like that if you just want to play the game through.

but if your completely new for role playing in any form, these might not be the games you want to start with unless you are prepared to read lots of dialogue and when compared to the new (like Oblivion) rpg's the difference in the amount of dialogue will be noticeable.

but as soon as you get the hang of the role playing games, you will probably like these games if you like reading fantasy books like the lord of the rings or dragon lance or the forgotten realms novels themselves?

the games shouldnt even be too expensive anymore, i found my pack from a pile of discount games for abaut 20 € and from 4 good (imo) games thats a bargain, but i dont know how well they will run on vista but atleast on Xp they work fine and any Pc should be more than able to run these oldies today with ease i suppose.

another rpg for pc that is very similar to Baldurs Gate, is the Isewind Dale series.

but anyway, like Wulfshelmut said with the Fallouts, its quite likely that you have played some game from series already? as there is one "branch" turned to console's by the name Baldurs Gate : Dark Alliance, and i agree with him with Knight's Of The Old Rebublic series and would recommend Gothic series too, it has medieval theme to it and graphics like in Morrowind, and it should be more easier to learn maybe?
and as an hack & slahs rpg's Diablo series, and Rune game for pc or console's
and a pc game called Wasteland, as in Fallout's setting? but that is probably just antique today. but now im afraid that this would grow to be too large wall of text if id blabber abaut these too,

watch out for getting hooked, ;) there is quite good games in this thread that should introduce you to rpg gaming quite throughoutly and probably more user friendly than these, :$ in case you have absolutely no idea what's the difference from shooter's or survival games in terms of the things that affect the player character and the world around it
