What does "hardcore" mean these days?

Not long ago it seemed to be universally accepted that "hardcore" gamers were people who made playing, discussing and collecting video games a primary hobby of theirs, regardless of the individual's experience or the genres or types of games they were interested in.

Last generation I remember "casual gamers" meaning a gamer who was not interested in the gaming universe as a whole, but a select few titles of certain genres, like someone who had an Xbox mainly for Halo and Madden, or mainly played online puzzle games, and played games as a tertiary hobby rather than their main past time.

More and more recently it seems as though the idea of "hardcore gamers" as being perceived as anyone who was playing video games prior to 2006 when "non gamers" started buying systems in large quantities and became the new "casual gamers" while the new "hardcore" became anything too complex or violent to appeal to the typical Wii Fit playing grandma.

The reason I say this is because even companies like Nintendo and Microsoft seem to be adopting this language and it irks me that "hardcore" seems to be moving to mean anyone who can use a two handed controller rather than the actual level of interest and dedication in the gaming universe.

Hardcore is just if you play, talk about, and even think about video games a lot. I think if video games have become so special that it is a part of your daily life or big part of your life then I would call you 'hardcore' although I've never been fond of the word.

Amen.

Everything you have said is spot on. It annoys me to no end all this "hardcore gamer" rubbish. To me you either love games or you don't, that is all there is to it.

As you pointed have out, back in the day "hardcore gaming" was used to describe people such as myself who class gaming as their hobby and love all genres and types of video games. Now it is just used to describe anybody who favours, let's say, Gears of War over Wii Sports.

Bah, humbug!

I guess it depends who you ask, hardcore gamers are not neccessarily the best, and I don't think that they have to play cod4, or gears of war just that (as other people have said) you enjoy gaming you talk about games and you think about them alot. I don't think you have to have alot of games either

I do. I need to know that if you tell me you love playing video games that you enjoy and have played all kinds of games not just Madden and Halo otherwise I probably won't get much out of the conversation.

I would differentiate hardcore and casual gamers in the same manner SuperTrainStationH does and have always understood it that way.
