When will the PS2 die?

Being a fan of the PS2 I was always thinking about when Sony would drop the console all together. I think that eventually they will drop it at the end of 2009 or the start of 10.

However like the Dreamcast and Genesis, their might be some third party developers trying to keep games available for the console.

Well, the PS2 still has some exclusive games like Persona 4. But aside from Persona 4, there's really no other powerful exclusive games on the system. Give it another year and it will slowly perish.

I have to disagree, you are missing TONS of exclusive games, some of the most popular ones are God of War 1 and 2, Metal Gear Solid series, Jak and Daxter Series, Sly Cooper series and more.

I think the PS2 will slowly die over the next 2 years because it's hard to get rid of a console with 145m+ units in households around the world.

For me it will never really die.. I mean how many people on here still have an N64 or even an NES. Mainstream I think 2010/11 it will end its commercial life after slowing down slowly.

I think he was talking about exclusives that are currently being released. As for how long, Sony usually goes by the 10 year rule so my guess is sometime around 2010 or 2011. As long as the Wii is out the PS2 will still have games releases for it

Sony will quit supporting it in 2010 or 2011 I believe. There's still tons of games being released for it, and with the economy the way it is, people aren't wanting to upgrade to the PS3 just yet, so they're holding on to their Playstation 2's.

well i'm not complaining about the ps2 still being around, the original xbox ended wayyyyyyy to soon and that's one of the reason's why the ps2 destroyed it in sales. I hope the continue making great games for less money for another 5 years!

Devil Summoner 2 is coming out May 12 for the PS2. And also Atlus said that Persona 5 may be on PS2. I doubt that the PS2 will die within the next couple of years.

It will die in a few years in the stores but not in my house. I will always love my PS2 in 10 years as much as I loved it when I first got it.

I think the ps2 will stay around for a while maybe the next 2 years or so. If im not mistaken i believe the ps2 outsold the ps3 every xmas since the ps3's release. Plus with our economic situation i dont think people can afford to upgrade.

I think it will die in 2010. Sony is losing a lot of money with both systems being out.

Sony knows that the ps2 is porfitable & that they are still making money off of it

I know they have the 10 year rule so it's got however many years left and I'm sure longer since they really wanna drain all the money outta this system as they can

The PS2 is the only game console I own, so I will be in tears when it finally dies out. I'm a huge fan of the console (Yes -- It's the only console I own....so that goes without saying.), but with the huge library of great games for it, it'll really suck when one stops seeing PS2 games being released and put out on shelves.

In my personal opinion -- I feel like Sony in general will put a great majority of their efforts and focus on the PS3. The PS3 needs some more big title exclusives to sell the system in my opinion (though what I think they really need is a price drop, hahahaha). I wouldn't be at ALL surprised if they let the PS2 die out within the next couple of years.

That being said, it IS the only last gen console that I know of that still puts out games in stores like Target. I could be horrendously ignorant and wrong about that, but as far as I know.....most Targets and Best Buys still carry PS2 games, whereas finding Xbox games there is improbable if not impossible.

As DXRANT said: Sony does realize that the PS2 is still profitable, and that people are still playing their PS2's, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for another few years of great games for my PS2. Regardless, I'll still be playing it until I can afford to upgrade :D.

The great thing about the 360 isn't beating the games. It's showing everyone online that I did

Sony will still get sales because let's not forget kids with PS2 consoles who have parents who are like
'You don't need the PS3, you already have a PS2.'
