I upgraded my laptop so put the old HD from that in my PS3. Size is 250GB. Just backed everything up to my external HDD and swapped them over . Works fine now, very helpfull for DLC and music etc.

I also use my old 40gb PS3 hard drive in an enclosure I brought for a few quid and use it for music, plugged into my PC.

I have 36gigs left on my 80gig PS3 so I'm thinking about upgrading to a 320 or 500gig, my brother has an external hard drive I can use to backup my memory so it makes everything THAT much easier. I was also going to buy an enclosure for the 80gig (74gig) hard drive after erasing everything and use it as an external hard drive if I ever may need it in the future.

Angel the best thing to remember is that there are games saves and game data. games saves is pretty self explanatory, its your progression in game. game data is the game install. you can delete the game data/install anytime and the save will still be there. i have played probably 70 games or so and all i do is keep the game data for the games i know i will be playing a lot installed, when i finish a game i typically delete the game data (unless i want to play it again lol) just remember not to delete the save file, thats where you end up in one hell of a pissed off mood lol

I upgraded my roommates PS3 from 40G to 500G. It's pretty easy to do if you have an external USB drive to act as a cache of your current data (use the backup in the system menu).

I suggest using a 7200RPM hard disk if you don't keep your PS3 in a tight space. This will increase the install and loading speed. If you can spare the 100 bucks then order a Seagate Momentus XT from Newegg.com. It has a 4G SSD cache that acts as a high speed buffer on frequently used data.

But don't settle for less than 500G no matter what.

I upgraded to 500GB and filled the majority of it with music and movies. It's great to have all of my music on their because now if I ever feel like jamming along on the guitar I just pick a few songs and play...and instead of having to switch DVDs out, I can just start up a movie any time I want to.

Just updated to a 250 that I had around to hold me until the drive shortages are over.

Hey Guys, I haven't been on this site in a while (almost 2-3 years apparently ). Anyways I was debating posting a new thread asking about hard drive because I have some questions but it seems like this would be most convenient. My 60 GB PS3 with essentially a full memory "YLOD'd" on me last year and i bought a new one with 120 GB. My 60 GB hard drive has 98% of my desired save data on it and I'm wondering a way if I can transfer data from a 60 GB hard drive to the 120 GB. Basically all of my options would be appreciated lol.

yeah you would need to put your 60gb one in another ps3 and hook up them both together with a cross over cable and there is an option to put the save files on the 120gb

Okay thanks man, but you're sure there isn't an easy way to transfer data? It seems a bit extreme to get 2 consoles, tv's and a cable just to transfer lol
but thanks for the tips

Well you could use an external hard drive move the data there, and boom, move the data to the other PS3.

I recently added the Seagate Momentus XT 500GB drive. It is a 7200RPG hard drive with 32MB of cache. The other nice thing is that it has a 4GB SSD that it uses to store 'often used' files there so it comes from the SSD and not the hard drive.

Installation is the same as any. I did notice my frames not dropping as often on disc heavy installs. Rage texture pop doesn't happen as much either. Netflix smokes now LOL. Every bit counts I suppose. Loading and saving is now nearly instantaneous and installation of game data is noticiibly faster.

Overall it was a great purchase. Highly recommend it if your PS3 is your main machine.
