New PSP Named And Coming This Fall
Sources confirm the next PSP will gain an internal flash drive, ditch UMD, and nix the rumored second analog nub.

(Not an Actual PSP Go! Photo)

Rumors of a major PSP hardware redesign have repeatedly bubbled to the surface over the last several months -- some claiming the removal of the system's UMD disc drive, and others pointing to a second analog stick and sliding screen. According to sources directly involved with the new system, we have learned that Sony will quell those rumors by unveiling their revamped PSP at this year's E3 conference in June.

Many have speculated that the update would be called either the PSP 2 or PSP-4000, but our sources claim Sony will forgo a numerical moniker in favor of a subtitle. We've heard various rumored code names for the project (including PSP Slide, PSP Flip, and PSP Go!), but given that Sony has introduced the Go! brand of add-ons (the Go!View video on-demand service and 1.3 megapixel Go!Cam) for the European PSP, it seems likely that the new system will in fact be called the PSP Go! Our sources further confirm that this redesign will be available in two SKUs, with either eight or 16 GB of built-in flash memory. The system is set for release in Japan this September with a U.S. debut coming in either late October or early November.

In addition, since the UMD is going away, Sony will have over 100 classic and new PSP titles available for download at launch (Gran Turismo Mobile is said to be one of the premier launch titles). As for the hardware itself, the redesign will include a d-pad, analog nub, and face buttons as part of a sliding unit sticking out below the screen (as seen in our mockup above). Unfortunately for those looking for twin-stick shooter controls, the new system will not have a second analog stick, but instead will remain consistent with the current control configuration.

When asked about any of these details, Sony, of course, stated that it "does not comment on rumors or speculation."

As a bit of actual speculation, we wouldn't be surprised to see Sony borrow many design features from their Mylo 2 handheld Internet device, which is seemingly dead in the water. This could provide an 800x480 pixel touch screen for the system, as well as a camera on the system's backside.

Between the redesign and a strong lineup of recently announced PSP titles (see: Tekken 6 and Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny), Sony is clearly attempting to assert their relevance in the wake of the DSi's release and success of the iPhone as a gaming platform. It'll be interesting to see what sort of a splash Sony makes and the reaction the new hardware receives when it debuts at E3, which is only a month away. Preloading every PSP Go! with a copy of LittleBigPlanet would certainly make some waves.

Hmm.

Agreed, It really annoys me that they're going 100% downloads. ^o) I'd much rather pay $5 or so extra and get an actual hard copy of a game.

Rather have UMDs. I don't like fully downloaded games, I don't mind add-ons downloaded but full games, I much rather physically own the game.

Sounds like a downgrade to me, if it in fact is a flip you can run across the problem much like you do with flip phones of the top screen really not synchronizing with the bottom buttons, or freezing. Still no second analog? Why are they not listening to the biggest demand among psp fans? I really loathe just the one analog, my biggest peeves in a game is camera functionality, psp certainly has that problem with many games. I'm worried about the analog being even more compressed and not really precise if it has to be tucked away under a screen, maybe they will make a pop up function for it. The picture looks cool, and it could change the way handhelds will be developed, but still running into the same problems with just a nicer appearance.
I also favour the UMD, there is no way I want to keep buying like an SD card and what not to have the needed space for games considering that they look as though they are going to be entirely downloadable, 16GB good luck.
I really hope they are joking about that, that greatly inconveniences gamers.

EDIT: ok, so it's 2:58am and maybe i didnt think before posting, obviously there arent going to be official pics of the device released by sony until E3 but the pic just looked odd to me... that being said... its obviously photoshopped... now, enjoy my original asinine post!

is it just me or do those controls look painful? those buttons are so low and the analog knob is ridiculously located. theres no way that my thumb would reach that. that doesnt look ergonomic at all. does it come with a carpal tunnel waiver too? hold on... and the shoulder buttons are on the top of the screen? i wanna call photoshop botch on that pic... the capabilities and all sound reasonable (although only internal memory = fail) but that pic looks like a botched photoshop of a current psp.

sorry to call shenanigans... but something ain't right...

SHENANIGANS!!! :P

Now that this is leikely official with that Qore episode leak I'll post my opinion on it. I think it's extremely ugly and the controls look very very uncomfortable to use. Also downloadable only sounds like a really bad idea to me. Also didn't they make the screen smaller?

i just smell fail with this. a typical UMD disc is maxed out at about 1.8 gigs and a lot of games are starting to get to that capacity, some games in the near future could even come on 2 UMD discs as the psp supports disc swapping. with a 16 gig limit on the internal capacity that means a total of about 8 games can be stored on it at any one time, that is, if you want to download a 1.8 gig game, and if developers want to chance relying on consumers being patient enough to download a 1.8 gig file, or sacrificing something (i.e. quality, game length, sidequests, bonus content) to make the files smaller. i dont know... i just dont think the community is going to support this too well and i think a lot of developers are going to sit by the sidelines to see how well this thing sells before they invest in it which could mean launch and post launch games could be limited and questionable. just my opinion. as long as they keep the psp-3000 on the market thats going to be what i'm using, personally.

Am I the only one that likes the new psp? In my opinion Sony are taking tips from nintendo by finally making it more portable, the first psp is just not pocket sized unless you're wearing a pair of combat trousers (pants).

And for those complaining about the screen getting smaller... Try playing a gameboy sp and then the smaller screen of the gameboy micro. The smaller size actually makes the graphics looks better!

I'd rather get an iPod Touch for my gaming needs on-the-go. This is just too expensive when I can get a iPod Touch for the same price, jailbreak it, and get loads of free games, 250 is just to much.

Now i'am kinda seeing the benefist of it.. i mean
noo umd. means noo umd loading means better loading times.....
Noo umd loading sounds....
its smaller lighter...
on the other hand. i dont and wil never like downloadeble games..
soo i hope every psp game will be psp 3000 umd and downloadeble psp go.
also hope that sony will come with a easy and free way to somehow rippp my bought umd games and put it on the psp goo...

Than you could just buy the game at the store ripp it to your psp go and thats it.

I'm still disapointed that they don't have a 2nd analog stick

plus my experience with the PSP original was trash since every game I had broke along with one of my PSP buttons on it

Honestly, it was not worth my money but I like the concept of the go
