Disney to acquire Marvel for $4 billion

(AP) – 52 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES — The Walt Disney Co. says it is acquiring Marvel Entertainment Inc. for $4 billion in cash and stock, bringing characters like Iron Man and Spider-Man into the Disney family.

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of 5,000 Marvel characters.

Disney said Monday that Marvel shareholders will receive $30 per share in cash plus 0.745 Disney shares for every Marvel share they own.

It said the boards of Disney and Marvel have both approved the transaction, but it requires an antitrust review and the approval of Marvel shareholders.

Maybe disney trying to tap into a more adult audience? Recently they've been trying to appeal to teenagers and young adults, so maybe this is they're next step.

This is horrible news.
This'll probably mean no tough-as-nails wolverine anymore, no pg-13 spider-man 4, and some stupid 7 year old garbage starring the coolest superheroes.
Does anyone think that the people behind hannah montanna would be well-suited for awesome superhero stuffs? I certainly don't.

NOOOOOOOOOOoooo.. say it isn't so! I don't want any "Marvel Musical" around the corner, don't get me wrong, Disney has produced some of the greatest animated classics, but a lot more of their style now is CG movies, musicals, teeny bop sitcom shows. I really don't see how Marvel would fit into that.
What would happen to characters like Spider Man, Carnage?
A lot of the Marvel Universe their heroes have somewhat grim background stories, I think Disney would change the principle in order to make it more family friendly, that is their brand.
Who knows, perhaps Disney will develop a more adult branch, but it's guaranteed that they will still take some of the classic Marvel characters and play them down big time.

I love (not really) how everyone who has commented so far seems to think that Disney equates to kids-only and that the entire Marvel canon is going to be retooled for toddlers.

I guess none of you realize Disney as a company is much more than Mickey Mouse and Hannah Montana.

Disney isn't afraid to put out material for older audiences such as PG-13 and R rated films, and that aside, Disney still has to honor all of Marvel's previous contractual agreements, which means the Iron Man and Spider Man films are still in the same hands.

Supertrain's probably right; we're overreating. It can't be that bad, and disney isn't showing any signs of drastiiclally changing marvel.
