Will a PS2 memory card allow data from PS1 games to be saved?

I am about to embark on another playthrough of Final Fantasy VII, however I will be playing it on a PS2 and I only have the 8 MB memory card. Will I be able to save data on a PS2 memory card or do I need to seek out a PS1 memory card?

Thanks. I didn't want to get too far into the game and find that I can't save any data.

For some reason I believe the PS2 memory card uses a different encoding and that is why you can't save PS1 games on it. :(

I'm actually trying to fix a memory card port problem in my old PS2, it doesn't seem to want to recognize it, I think I screwed up the ribbon.

Anyone know if I can save PS2 game slots onto the hardrive I attached?
