Used 60gb vs New PS3 Slim

Welcome To Warp Zone!

I'm going to get a PS3 this weekend, but I really would like an older model. I want full PS2 compatibility because I've never owned one myself. However, they're generally more expensive. However, someone I know will sell me one for about $225, which is a decent price. However, I'm not sure if Sony will replace it with another backward compatible one (which I would have to pay repairs on, of course) should this one break down. On the other hand, the $299 price point on the Slim is a great deal, so I'm really torn.

Help please!

Sega Does What Nintendon't

Myself I would go with the new slim because the 60 Gig models are the ones more likely to break according to the net. Plus you will get a full warranty and if you buy it at Walmart you can extend the warranty on the system for a small price.

Later you can get a used PS2 for dirt cheap and there only $99.00 new so if you do want to play PS2 games that's the route I would take.

Definitely take into consideration how often you will be playing PS2 titles on your PS3, if you are a collector than a backwards compatible system would be of value.

At this point it is all rumours but if Sony wanted they could implements PS2 compatibility with a firmware update for the new slims, and this was talked about, but in no way confirmed.

The 60GB models are most valued because of their ability to play PS2, and with being able to swap up the hard drive, space is less of an issue, it would just be more tricky to fix this console if it does break down, and Sony may very well send you a newer model of a different kind if you ever send your 60GB.

Always think that if you go with the newer slim model, later in the future you can pick up a rather cheap PS2 slim for all your older generation playing needs. It's how I deal with the situation, works out great, my T.V has enough outputs that I don't have to keep swapping systems out.

I would choose the 60gb ones for about $75-100 less than the slim since it's backwards compatible.

In fact, that's what I just did this week, only with an 80gb PS3, for $200 and a bunch of games (but only one PS3 one).

I had a 60gb model and now I have a 250gb slim.

A couple of things to consider...

The 60gb model is not fully compatible with ps2 games. When I gave GTA a play there were A LOT of glitches and I imagine this will be the case for other games too.

As far as I'm aware you can upgrade the HDD in the Slim just like in the older models, however 250gb is a decent size.

I'd suggest a PS3 slim and pick up a dirt cheap second-hand PS2.

While the 60gig is the only "FULLY" ps2 compatible model, it has the fatal ylod flaw. It WILL eventually break and only time and upkeep will tell when. I had mine for about...2and a half years and it ylod'd out on me.

I suggest getting a slim and just going to buy a new slim ps2 as well.

This is untrue. Only the original US/Japan 60 gig was fully hardware compatible, then there was a partial software emulation in the EU launch machines.

So, if you live in the US or Japan you WILL get full backwards compatibility on the 60GB, if you are in the EU you WON'T.

How good is the compatability with the 80gb PS3 that came bundled with MGS4? (cuz that's the one I got, and don't have many PS2 games to test on it.... yet)

This link gives you a PS3 backward compatibility list to PS2 titles, by the looks of it most games will work, others won't.
