I think Uncharted has the best story. I love how they tie everything together throughout the game and don't really leave anything to be guessed at, in a good way.

I really enjoyed the story in Uncharted 2, Fable 2, San Andreas and final fantasy 7.

Sega Does What Nintendon't

Current Gen:

Folklore:(PS3): Folklore is a great game with 2 main characters whose stories and paths intertwine. The basic plot of the game is both characters get lured to the town of Doolin Ireland, Ellen searching for her dead mother who sent her a letter and Keats looking into a strange phone call he received. Folklore has a dark fantasy / fairy tail / mythological style story with a wide array of characters such as scarecrows, witches, faeries, and ghosts.

Last Gen:

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (Game Cube): This is one of the best stories ever in a video game period. I cant go into it much with out ruining it but in general its about a young girl who goes to Rhode Island to investigate her grandfathers death. While there she finds chapters of the Tomb of Eternal Darkness. Each time she finds a new chapter she relives past events of people that have came into contact with the Tomb or who has major roles in the story. If you have never played this game you need to do yourself a favor and pick up a copy ASAP because this is truly masterpiece of a game and its a real shame that Nintendo hasn't made a part 2 to this game.

I prefer Uncharted 2 as an overall game and I love the story(the character interactions and personalities are perfect), but it's still penultimate to Sly 2 on the PS2.

Well for FPS I'd say battlefield bad company and battlefield bad company 2

for extreme sports I'd say tony hawk's proving ground if you want the whole what you choose defines who you are but other than that tony hawk's underground has the best story and then next would be american wasteland

oh can't for get grand theft auto iv or grand theft auto san andreas

Lost Odyssey:
The story is really heart warming, especially the unrelated Thousand Years of Dreams stories in the game. If only people can get past the basic gameplay, they'd appreciate the story of this magnificent game.

Shenmue 1 & 2:
Hands down to the story of these games, it's intense, dramatic and yet cute all at the same time.

Current gen - I'd probably have to go with Assassin's creed 2 , I'm going Assassin's creed crazy at the moment.

Last gen - I'll agree with the HBF and say the Shenmue series

This generation it would have to be MGS4 and last generation it would be MGS3 or FFX.

My favorite plots from various games...

Xenogears - I really enjoyed this game. Everything about this game had something I enjoyed thoroughly. Playing through this game repeatedly adds another layer you may have missed in previous playthroughs, which is fantastic.

Final Fantasy Tactics - I have yet to play the PSP remake, but the original was quite epic. However, some of the misspellings hurt to read, haha.

Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals - Though the game was fairly standard with story, I absolutely loved the ending and the events that took place after the final boss fight. I will say this though, the DS re-envisioning of the game fell a bit short:(

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride - I seriously love this game. This game really appealed to my tastes in what I look for in an RPG. This game gave me a feeling of an Epic, like The Odyssey. By that statement, I mean traversing the world and how the main character goes from a 6 year old boy to a young man while in search of his mother. The thing that probably tugged at me the most, giving me that warm fuzzy feeling inside, was looking at the main character's title and how it changes throughout the game. If you can't tell, I seriously love this game, haha.

Gamer. Graphic Designer. Geek.

I loved the story in Alan Wake! Also Chrono Trigger on DS if you want a great portable storyline.

My favorite stories ever in games were Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 9.

And though I've never played it, I hear Xenogears has a great storyline.

None of those last 4 were last gen, but they are all playable on last and current gen systems :)

Mass Effect. But to get it all you have to read the three books.

The first book is the prequel to the first game. Second book is prequel to the second game. Third book is setting the stage of the 3rd game, but is more of a continuation of the first books and a epilog to the second game.

It was written by the guy who works at BioWare on Mass Effect's story. He also worked on KOTOR and iirc is working on the new Star Wars MMO for them. He sets an almost identical stage as what you see in the game and ties it all in very heavily.

It is actually something I think is brilliant.
