What is the "NES Version" of the Nintendo Enetertainment System?; Odd system branding on an NES

Over the years I've seen several photos of a Nintendo Entertainment System with the unusual legend "NES Version" below the regular system logo on the cartridge door.

Anyone know what this legend means?

Hmm... this might seem REALLY outside of the box, but it kinda looks like it may not be an actual NES, but something made to look like it. Like maybe it's a carrying case for a laptop. It's the NES version of their line of cases.
What site did you ifnd that pic? What did it have to say about it?

The picture hasn't been doctored, I've seen numerous photographs of "NES Version" systems over the years, some of which were actual official Nintendo publicity shots.

These even appeared in some old NES commercials.

I've never seen any explicit comment about the NES Version before, and I've been seeing pics of this thing around the web since 2000.

That doesn't make much sense that it says NES version...that would be like saying "Wii: Wii version" or "Xbox: Xbox edition"...

I think that appears on PAL versions of the NES, though I have no idea why they need to put it there. I does seem kind of redundant.

Here is the deal. In the UK, Italy and Australia, two versions of the NES were released, the "Mattel Version" and "NES Version".When the NES was first released in those countries, it was distributed by Mattel and Nintendo decided to use a lockout chip specific to those countries, different from the chip used in other European countries. When Nintendo took over European distribution in 1990, they produced consoles that were then labelled "NES Version". The differences between the two are the text on the front flap, a smoother finish on the top of the "NES Version" console and being compatible with US and Canadian NES systems. Hong Kong and Asian are self explanitory by the same reasoning as above.
