Fuck. There I said it. Often considered the worst word of the bunch. Did the sky fall? Did a baby die? No, at least not from the utterence of a bunch of letters combined to make a word. Then why is it most people fear it? With out proper dictation the word means nothing. With proper dictation does it really amp the sentence? It shouldn't. Bad words are a fairy tale. It's another example of people attaching themselves to primal rules. How long is it we will cling to false morals? What is your view of a "Bad" word? As a test of your stance I will state one that's considered the worst. Nigger Who did that hurt? No one. P.S. Moderators, please don't censor this thread. If "Bad" Words are used in a non violent manner, then they are not bad. |

No one keen on commenting no? Hahaha. I must say i swear a lot, but i dont see how different saying fuck or bugger is from making up your own word and saying that. Its like your instilled from a young age not to say it, or even question its moral value. If some people didn't make it a big deal then kids prob wouldnt actually say it that much. I said "jesus im tired" in front of my mates mum and she got kinda offended. Its like damn, would you get offended if i said "hercules im tired"? Depends on the tone though i guess, i was to say "Fuuuck..." in response to a pretty far out story or a car crash etc im sure no-one would give a damn but to actually direct it at someone it would be very different. |

Interesting topic. I feel that the impact is not just in the word itself, but the context in which it is used. If I drop an F-bomb here and there (which I most certainly do), it is different if I am describing something or conveying an emotion than it would be if I was directing it in a hostile manner towards someone else. As the cliche goes, it's not what you say so much as how you say it. Profanity is part of our everyday language, something that I rarely think about nor does anyone else. It's not even a matter of it being "Bad Words" anymore since everyone is so desensitized to it and it is used so freely these days. That's not a bad thing, per se, since it shows how far we have come from the ultra-conservative, tight lipped and inhibited mentality of the 1950's. Vulgarity is not nearly as shocking or offensive now as it was back then. The only problem I can see is when people overuse it to either make themselves seem tougher or cooler than they really are. When I see some 12 year old in an online forum dropping f-bombs like they're going out of style, I roll my eyes and thank Christ I am not that kid's parent. |

If it's directed towards someone to offend them then I think it's bad. Doing it out of anger such as dropping a bottle of ketchup on your foot (hurts like hell) shouldn't be taken seriously. Blasphemy is a different case as it regards beliefs which people choose to follow. |

I used to imagine back in olden times a bunch of people sitting around with the conversation going something like this Guy 1 "we need to make some laws Guy 2 "i know lets make up some words that you cant say...we shall call them swear words" Guy 1 "what a fantastic idea! Guy 2 "Isnt it" Guy 1 "And if you speak such words you shall be considered less of a citizen and considered a nuisance" Guy 2 "You have my vote" Guy 1 "And so it is settled, from here on swear words exist and cannot be uttered by anyone" I chuckle to myself at the thought. I mean really, who decided that these words should be "bad"? |

Ouch? Not respecting the beliefs of others is, to me, the definition of rude and ignorant. EDIT: The rest of this post wasn't really clear. I basically said that swearing isn't a big deal, but religious curses are a bigger, but not to much so, deal. Edited by matt456p, Mar 4 2010, 11:08 PM.

fuck..... i personally really dont care if any1 used it on here. i grew up in a rough neighborhood were the "f" word was in almost every sentance. i use the word to but i try to not say it that much cuz its "unprofesional". though i really couldnt care less if some1 on here used that word. but keep in mind there are children that could easily use that word and tell they're parents they saw the word here. so... i guess we keep the words (fuck, shit, crap, dick, cock, motherfucker and someother that ppl use) on the down low. -sleepy |

Someone needs to get their attitude straightened out. Like Matt said, that is one of the rudest things someone could say, that's equivalent to saying "I don't care at all about what people have to say or think." |

But if your personally have absolutely no belief in religion, and to you it is comparable to myth, folklore or old wives tales then blasphemy simply just doesnt exist, therefore how can you be rude or ignorant for not caring about thier faith. Not believing in santa or the easter bunny isn't rude or ignorant is it? Dont get me wrong, i wouldn't insult someone of the faith... i would just be slightly sceptical as to thier judgement on things. sorry for taking things off track a bit. haha. |

didnt notice this post...its one of the rudest things in the world? Not caring about others beliefs? I dont care either, but it doesnt mean i would wish to offend you, i would find it very naive that you would expect me to care about your beliefs when im not bothered if you care about mine...such bad grammer thier but cant be bothered changing it. Would you care if you met a crazy guy in the street that believes goldfish stole his family? Would not respecting his beliefs be rude and ignorant? It doesnt mean, "I don't care at all about what people have to say or think." Edited by Kharnivore2099, Mar 2 2010, 07:45 PM.

I stand by me saying that it's rude and ignorant, but I think I was too harsh on using the lord's name in vain. It shouldn't be done, but it slips and I don't think it's a huge deal at all. |

I always did wonder that...and who decided that damn is worse than darn? Did the cavemen have a huge list on what words were bad, in order from worst to just bad? It sure is a strange thing to think about... |

I PERSONALLY don't like to cuss and I believe there's a right place and time to say it but if someone wants to cuss, I wouldn't really mind since it's their choice and they are free to do so. We all have our own opinions and beliefs, and only caring about your own makes your arguments invalid. That's bigotry right there. The mindset about cuss words will never change, you might say that you think they are just words but I'm sure you'd be pissed if someone says "Fuck You" to you randomly, that's why it will never change. |

I don't cuss a lot and one thing I hate is when people cuss in public in front of children. My ex-girlfriend would cuss almost every 2 minutes at the house or out in public in a store and if it was in a store I would always tell her to stop cussing if children are around. I don't know why but I just think it's disrespectful. Also my friends know I cuss but my mom doesn't and none of my family members do except for my cousins because I don't do it around them. My step-brother knows I cuss and was talking to my mom one day and said something about me cussing and she said "Steven doesn't cuss" and he said "WhaaaT?? you never heard him say anything?"

I honestly can't care about the beliefs of other. When ever I see a middle eastern girl walking around with her face covered because of their religion, it infuriates me. I'm not sure about you guys, but I've seen the punishment for what happens with the girls who take their veils off, and it's often cleansing by fire. On top of this, have respect for Christianity? It doesn't have respect for me. Christian push their beliefs on the whole world. They have 0 respect for anyone else's beliefs. Whether it's around the world, or door to door, missionaries go around disrespecting other peoples cultures and belief systems every day. Oh, and have we forgotten the crusades? Christians going around beheading anyone who isn't christian? So poor you if I don't respect your belief. The only reason is because your beliefs don't respect mine. |

I knew a arabian girl from high school who wore a viel. She was really nice and everything, a good friend of mine and a kid at the zoo called her a ninja. I think they should be able to walk around without it. |

Have you ever heard of ritual beheadings? They still go on here in the states. When a father gets mad at her daughter for doing something, removing veil, talking to non middle eastern boys, ect, the family will remove her head. |

Religion isn't the leading cause for murder, it's simply an excuse used by evil fanatics who wish to force their own power onto others. If you really wanted to go down this route, it's money that's the greater killer. Be it territory, oil or other. But we're going off topic. As with all words, swearing is a form of expression, traditionally used in situations that warranted a strong exemplification, or were used to describe things of an unpleasant, or adult nature. They traditionally didn't have a place in day-to-day life. However as time goes on, and times change, people have become sort of 'desensitised' to swearing, and it's become a bit more socially acceptable to use them in normal, everyday situations. This in turn desensitises people further... And it becomes a commonly used crutch in some peoples vocabularies. As with most things however, this doesn't apply to everyone, and there are plenty of people that chose not to frequently use these words. Hence, in these social circles, using them is less acceptable. This is a sheer uneducated assumption, but I'm guessing you're a young white male, either American or English. You've probably only heard the word 'nigger' thrown around by young black people, or by immature kids on the Internet. I'm guessing you've never encountered first hand the power, and hatred behind this word. In some social circles, it's become an accepted term. However to many others, they still remember, or still have to experience the power and hatred behind the word. It all comes down to acceptance. You have a certain acceptance of these words, and others will have a difference in acceptance. An understanding of this isn't necessary, but an acceptance would be just dandy
