Website; Should I?

Hello everyone, and I'm here to ask everyone another question. It's not a poll, because I might do it either way.

This has been kind of a spur of the moment, but I have been thinking of making a new website. I have had experience with website-making for a while (about 4 websites), but this one will be more of a blog than an actual website.

So basically if I did make a website, it would most likely be like a blog. I would probably post my reviews there as well as here, write about games I've been playing lately, games I've been hyped for, list and show pictures of my collection, talk about other things I've been interested lately (websites, books, etc.), and more.

What I am asking you, my fellow PGRF members is, is would you be interested in something like that?

I'm going to say this right now. I am not trying to advertise for this, or steal members from PGRF (believe me, it's not a forum or anything either). I am just trying to find out if people would be interested in reading those kinds of things in sort of a blog-website. Not saying you'd have to go there if you were interested, but rather seeing if anyone would check it out. I wouldn't want to go through all the trouble, then have no readers.

So, what do you guys think? Like I said before, I will probably do it either way just for fun, but yeah.

I'd check it out, and do you mean buying a domain, or using one of those free sites.

Using a free site, I don't like to pay to make my own website. I will most likely be using wordpress since it will be like a blog.

Anyway, thanks for the opinion!

Yes, actually, but they aren't active at all. And don't mind the spam on the Pokemon Z RPG one, that's just my friend acting like an idiot.

This one I made when I was really young: http://www.angelfire.com/anime5/gokuballz

This one I made when I was pretty young, but not as young: http://www.gokuballz.webs.com

And this one is pretty recent, I made it like 2 years ago. It used to look completely different and was overall better, but I shut that down and started up this one, then shut down this one: http://www.pokemonzrpg.webs.com

Other than what you mentioned in your original post, some sort of chatroom-type thing might be cool!

Can't wait to see the site!

I'd definitely give your site a chance. StephsTooDef runs a blog called "Playing 4 Fun" which she frequently updates with gaming-related posts, and I enjoy her site a lot. It's always fun to get a fresh perspective from others, so go for it and I'm sure you'll do well.

Blog style might be the best way to go at the start, especially if you are unsure of where exactly you want to take it. Another gaming forum might be redundant considering how established PGRF is, but a blog with chat options might work out well. The only way to know for sure is to do it, so get crackin :)

I was actually thinking that I wanted my blog to be like that, and I was planning on doing something like that, but with a little more than just a blog. I might try the chat think that Jholman brought up, but other than that, I'll just go from there! Thanks for the input!

Warning - I am honestly trying to help, and my apologies if I do come across as an arsehole, it's really not my intent.

If you're serious about reviews, then read on.

If you're doing it for the lols, and simply something to pass the time, then please disregard all content below.

Creating a gaming related website is tricky, and it depends entirely on what you wish to gain out of the experience. If you want it to be a website where you can blog reviews, and have people flock to read your opinions on games, then I'm sorry but the odds are stacked extremely strongly against you. Hardly anyone will go to an obscure site just for your reviews, they'd check the more reputable sources, usually prerelease as well.

Your best bet is to initially post on a bigger site such as GiantBomb or GameTrailers, get your own area full of quality reviews, and get a name out for yourself on the GT or GB communities. People on these communties will friend you, and keep on coming back to your space to read your reviews, you're reviews will get better and more popular, and hopefully you'll find your reviews hitting the top of the 'most read' lists, then you should start thinking about your own site.

One area to be very weary of - are the up and starter websites. Bands of writers who team together to make a gaming website. These rarely work, and I've had some bad, bad experiences with them. The last one crushed any enthusiasm for written reviews I once had. Ugh. Horrid.

Another area, I'd put some serious stock into changing your nickname if you want to be taken seriously for your reviews. PokemonZRPG just won't cut it, I know you're probably young (12?), but DBZ and Pokeymanns just aren't cool man. Just because you like something, doesn't mean anyone else will, and they'll easily and discount you on the basis on your username alone. I know I certainly would.

Another thing, sign out your reviews with your name. Ensure you have a timestamp of when you upload all your work, and ensure people know that your work remains your property and may not be replicated in part or full without your express written permission. I know it sounds like overkill, but if you get to the point where you can start pushing it, the last thing you want is some arsehole pulling your work off as his own.

I can only speak for myself, but I don't think I'd care if someone read my reviews if they based them SOLELY on my username. I guess if he's trying to have a really popular website, a few people might be turned away by the name, but I don't get the feeling he's intending it to be more than just a fun thing to do (I did read the beginning of your post though where you said to disregard it if that was the case, just thought I'd bring that up anyway). Regardless, I don't know if it's fair to say that a lot of people won't take the site seriously just because of a username. Just seems like something pretty petty for someone to disregard a site for, and it seems as though a vast majority of people are knowledgeable enough to base the reviews on other aspects besides the username of the person doing them. Maybe I'm just giving people on the internet too much credit though :)

As for Pokemon not being 'cool', it may not be something you walk around in high school talking about, but this is the internetz -- I'd say it's at least something that won't instantly be looked upon as something 'uncool'. Plus, who really decides what is and isn't cool these days? We all play and, to some extent, talk about video games. Can that really be considered 'cool' ;)

Other than that, you brought up some valuable points if he is looking to get his name out there. Also, not trying to start anything...just giving my opinion on your post.

No, you're correct and you raise a very valid point, different folks, different strokes. Just ebcause I think a certain way, doesn't make it a truth ;P

However, in my experience and preference, I'd rather read the more professional sounding author, just because authors with pop-culture usernames are stereotypically immature, and extremely biased, usually resulting in a waste of my time. Depends entirely on what you want.

EG:

Halo 5 Review
by Andrew Stillwell

Halo 5 Review
by masterchiefpwns

As for the pokeymanns being uncool - I didn't mean it in the literal sense, I'm far too old to give a damn about what's hot and what's not. Besides, ditto is pimpin' fresh and you know it. Jus' saying, don't try and build a reputation on a name you're going to outgrow in a year or so. Cos you'll have to start all over again once you do.

Good point - I personally probably wouldn't even have noticed the difference in the authors' names, but 'Andrew Stillwell' certainly looks more professional. I'd give any review a chance regardless of the username of the author, but you're probably right in saying that a lot of people likely wouldn't. As far as sticking with one username, you've got a solid point there too..but if he's been using pokemonzrpg for years and on other websites, it may be just as important to stick with that. I always like my usernames to be a little more simple and age-neutral, but I guess that's up to the particular person :)

You have some vailid points, but I am going to reply to some of them that I think are somewhat incorrect.

Now, I may be one of the youngest here (13), but I still have the smarts to know that some usernames like mine can actually bring in more readers than normal names.

When I see someone with a username like "SquirtleFTW" reviewing, I think hey, this guy has some good taste in games, maybe I should check out his review, cause it seems like it will be interesting. Yet, if I see someone with a username like "Joseph Savino" reviewing something, I think it is going to be boring because the username doesn't draw me in.

Regardless of that, I think more people disregard the username (unless the username is known for doing stupid things in the past) than the ones that care, because, in my point of view that is equivalent to judging a book by its cover, and we all know how that saying goes.

Also, you say I will out-grow Pokemon in close to a year, but that's not going to happen. I have been a dedicated Pokemon fan my whole life, and I plan on sticking with it for years to come. I am not one to abandon a great game series just because of what age group I fall under or anything, I'm smarter than that.

And to say the name Pokemon Z RPG just doesn't cut it, is, I think, a little ridiculous. My most popular website (Pokemon Z RPG) got 39 members, and that's just fine with me. I'm not looking to be the next Serebii.net, or even PGRF, but I just want to have a group of loyal members that will atleast read what I post, comment, and such. I definitely don't want just a high member count or anything like that, especially if they are just going to join and never participate/read my posts. If I had even just one loyal member that would read most/some of what I put on the site, I would be a happy camper as long as someone is enjoying my site.

And last, but certainly not least, you say that Pokemon is uncool. Now, I understand that out in the real world, Pokemon hasn't been very kindly excepted (in America atleast), but when we are talking about people that will actually take the time to go on a gaming-related website, they most likely have the smarts to either realise how innovative the Pokemon series was and is, or just not care at all, and ignore the username. If someone is stupid enough to ignore a site just because of the username, I probably wouldn't enjoy their company there anyway.

And considering I'm not looking for a top-of-the charts gaming website, I will probably just head right into making the site (it is a blog afterall). I have [enough] experience, the motive, and the entertainment from it all that allows me to do this, so yeah.

Then, the best of luck to you my man. You know what you want, you're evidently extremely smart, so I don't see why you can't get it.

Ya just gotta realise, if you want to expand on this at a later date, and maybe try and make the move on it being a little bit more than a casual hobby, you might need to think about ditching the alias.

Just for the record, you seem like one of the most mature / intelligent 13 year olds I've come across on the Internet. That's really, really awesome. Keep up the good work :D

As for the pokemon is uncool - I didn't mean it quite like that. As I mentioned afterwards, Ditto is pimpin' fresh.
