What career do I do?

Hello everyone, I know this isnt the right place probably but any help would do, at the moment Iam feeling like absolute you know I cant say the word.
I completed high school last year and I enrolled myself into a Health Science degree at uni, in my first week I have found out that this is not what I want to learn about and am not sure why I picked it to begin with (Pathway to teaching I guess), and now Iam unsure as to what I want to do, I cant even think straight at the moment, Iam that stressed out and I really dont think its good for my health.
I have tried everywhere including a Career advisor who was little of help, and I just dont know what to do as a course my mind is everywhere and I need to make a decision by Friday.

At first when I was 3 years ago I wanted to do something IT related, but after beginning my final 2 years of School I saw that IT was alot more in depth and I could never get my head around coding etc, so then I was about to drop out of school and undertake a course to become an electrician this didnt progress and my mind changed to becoming a teacher, not because I went THIS IS IT!, but rather that I saw the job was secure and it paid well and I only scored enough to get myself into a health science degree which would progress into a teaching degree in 3 years time, but I just dont like it and Iam just plain unsure of what I want to do in 4 years time at which time I will be 21 1/2 years old.

So please anyone who can help me out I will appreciate your help so much at the moment and I would regard any of you as people who helped me to get to where I was in 4 years time, at the moment though Iam loosing the will to live and that is not what I want to be doing.

Well, the first thing to do is calm down and work through the stress before making any decisions. Any course of study is hard work, but it ultimately boils down to what interests you and what you can see yourself doing as a career. I started off as a film major before going into business, so things change as you move through your college years. Most people I know started doing one thing in first year and ended up graduating in a totally different area.

But as I said, calm down first and think over what you want to do. Many people starting college/university feel the same way.

Its difficult as I dont know what I want to be doing, and when I finally did (Primary school teaching) the option just isnt there.

It makes it worse with the fact that my mind has to be made up within 4 days or im stuck...

Well, first of all, what kind of college are you going to; 4 year, public, private, community? Second of all, if you are pretty sure that you don't want to do what you are enrolled in, but can't decide, I would try to switch to a general studies degree. That can take you through your first 2 years, and you don't really have to choose a major, which will give you time to decide. And if you can't get out of this program that you are in, don't fret, you can still change later, and you should still be knocking out some of your core classes which is good for any major eventually.

Now for career choices... What are you good at, what are you bad at, what are your hobbies, and what subjects did you do well/poor in, in high school?

I'm about to turn 30 and I'm in a good career, but I'm still not 100% sure what I want to do, although I'm pretty sure this isn't it. Some people just have a harder time deciding what they want to do.

Excluding the fact that you like to play games, you really aren't giving us much to work with here... Give a little more information. Also, not many people enjoy their job at first, or have a well paying or good job at first. Almost everyone has to work their way up the ladder. Some people never like their jobs. I happen to like mine, but 99% of liking your job is going into it with a good attitude, and telling yourself everyday is going to be a great day... Tell us some more about your situation.

A career is something you build over time, so you need to be patient, absorb knowledge and experience, and work hard to attain the success you desire. Most students have a vague idea of what they want to do when they start college/university, and it's common to change majors or adopt a minor as they progress. You are feeling the classic "what am I going to do with my life?" anxiety that many people feel. The best move is to start something now and see where it takes you. If you are into gaming and computers, IT is a good choice. It seems daunting, but you learn over time and get better with practice.

It's so difficult to explain though as Im not kidding I dont even know where my head is at the moment.
I am in Australia so that means everything is probably a little different uni wise, but I went into health science because I thought it would be a good way to progress into Teaching in primary schools, the issue now is Iam not interested in my subjects, and I cant say that was Unexpected because during year 11 and 12 I had no Science related electives. This university is not offering a straight through path for teaching but rather a masters in teaching at the completion of some other course. And I dont have much alternatives, the other Uni's that offer this course have a much high Intake score which I havent met, and not to mention the Uni's are at the closest 60-70km away in one direction. I was thinking about distance study but I am not fond of it as I dont think I would be motivated to study alone not to mention I would never meet anyone which Iam certain would lead to severe anxiety or something in my state.

If you aren't 100% into what you are studying then distance study is a bad idea because you will put off the work... I think most teachers have to get it through a masters after they get a bachelors in something else.

Requiring teachers to have post-graduate degrees is common for most countries. In Canada, most people wishing to teach at an primary or secondary level must obtain a Bachelor of Education degree. In the US, I think it's a Master of Education. Either way, a bachelor's degree is a prerequisite.

The problem I can see is that you want to do things, but you are dissuaded by either the amount of work required or the uncertainty of succeeding. It's tough, but you need to work through that if you wish to get into your chosen profession. College is hard - it's meant to be, but it's also very rewarding if you give it your best.

It's a funny story for me. I have wanted to be a filmmaker my whole life, but I came to the realization a few years back that it's unstable and difficult to make a living off of. I went into business studies and I now work for a global background screening company, which specializes in doing background checks on people applying for jobs. I handle business writing, policies and corporate client service. It's not exactly a career, but it pays the bills. I am current back in school and working on a degree; human resources and labor management. I am almost 30 myself and I am still not in full "Career" mode. But I'm working hard to get there :)

Thanks for that, makes me feel a little better.
I dont know is there a point where I should not pursue the original career?
With teaching its an amazingly secure career that pays very well even as a beginner, but I personally have so many barriers to overcome if I want to teach Ill type all these up now:
1. My current course I was lied to about, the head of course said it would take me to a Primary Teaching Masters instead it would at most allow me to become a PE teacher in secondary school something I dont want to be doing.
2. I havent got a the required grade in English that the department of teaching wants and I would need to do some bridging course in order for someone to verify Iam capable of doing this.
3.With my end of high school score, I cant enter into a bachelor of education.
4.The university's where this is offered are really far and To be honest it wouldnt matter if I had a good friend coming with me I wouldnt even mind staying on campus, but seeing that I dont I really dont feel up to it at all.
5. I dont want to waste time, I want to graduate in something and get out and work and start my life, but I cant seem to do that as Ive got my self stuck in a bad spot with my lack of research during high school.
6.This is a health science course, and Im not a huge fan of playing sport, I enjoy watching it but id rather go for a jog or something not to mention I couldnt care less why something happends when you run which is what health science is about.

Unfortunately, this is something you need to work out yourself, but you need to realise that just because you set off on one career path, doesn't mean you can't change at a later date :)

Since I was 13, I've always wanted to work in IT. I worked my arse off, took a home learning course (don't do this), got myself in debt, but managed to land a well paying IT job... and I hate it. I'll be trying to move out of IT as soon as I can, I'm 24 now and I've had enough.

My girlfriend, went to uni, ended up retaking 2nd year twice before dropping out. She's now landed a job that pays well and she loves, proving that hard work, patience and dedication speaks more than bits of paper with grades on it.

What I'm trying to say - listen to your head and ya heart, set a goal and give it all you got. If you change your mind down the road, you can always change. Your choices now will influence your actions down the road. But they won't dictate them ;P

I know it will sound absurd but I will try one semester of distance study, because there is a University about 400km away offering Education as a bachelor and I think if I pass the 1st Semester I can transfer into On campus at the Uni In Sydney which is alot closer.

End of the day, do something you love.

That way, you'll never work a day in your life :)

I guess so, its just such a pain figuring out what you want to do when you arent even 18, all the things I wanted to do seem out of reach LOL and Im going to give this a shot with distance education, whats there to lose I guess and maybe if I never try this I will sit down in 10 years time and think I failed because I didnt try it.

We've all been there. Like I said, I'm almost 30 and I don't have everything figured out yet, but learning and growing is a lifelong process and you will have peaks and valleys in everything you do. Time will bring clarity to your situation, so don't let yourself get too stressed about it now. Figure out a path to follow now and you can always adjust your directions as your needs and goals change.

Can't comment much on this. I'm only 14 and I'm fortunate enough to know exactly what I want to do. And if plan 1. doesn't work, I've got other options as well. All I can say is good luck and do whatever you feel passionate about and have a good time doing. All the best!
