Disappointed With Precious

Hearing the hype about Precious had me eagerly awaiting my first viewing of the film. Last night I stopped by and picked up a copy from redbox. My wife and I popped the DVD in with excitement, and the last thing I expected to feel was disappointment. Now my wife did enjoy it more than I did, but I had a hard time finding much to like about the film. The performances is the one thing I can gladly say I was impressed by. Particularly with Monique and Mariah Carey. In fact It wasn't half way into the film that I realized it even was Mariah Carey. Other then a couple of the performances I didn't like anything else in the movie.

Some of the dialogue felt weak, and often it was blocked out by the narration. Which by the way, this must be the most intrusive narration I've ever heard. I can't imagine why the director felt we needed to be narrated to as a full blown conversation was going on. I think a lot of the problems I had with the films actually had to do with the style the director chose. I couldn't stand that in the middle of the fight between Precious and her Mother, the screen increasingly was plastered with family photos. It took me out of the film and the realism of the whole scene. I also couldn't stand the cliched teacher character. We've all seen this person before in films, but not all of them delivered speeches about being a strong black woman every chance they got.

The last thing that bothered me is that I felt the movie could have been 20 minutes shorter if you shaved off a lot of pointless walking sequences. I understand the point of providing a segway to the next sequence, but sometimes these walking scenes lasted a few minutes. On the other hand I felt the whole story ended very abruptly. Several of the plot lines seemed unfinished, and I would have liked to see Precious leave the halfway house. The segment with Lenny Kravitz and the front desk lady in particular seemed tacked on. There was no previous sequence mentioning the the lady was even looking for a man, yet when Precious introduces Kravitz to the front desk lady, shes wearing this big stupid grin on her face that screams "Finally!".

Now I'm not saying I felt the film was horrible, or a waste of time by all means. The performances from Carey and Monique were worth my time. I just felt it wasn't the greatness I had come to expect. Feel free to tell me your opinion on the films, as I am always ready to change my perception on the film. For now I'd give the movie no more than a 2/5. What's your take on the film?

That's a pretty good review. I am actually looking forward to seeing this movie, but the complaints you raised were the same ones I heard from others, so I'll know what to expect going in. From what I have read, it reminds me a little of "Welcome to the Dollhouse" but less surrealism. I will probably take my girlfriend as it looks like the kind of movie we can enjoy together.

After watching the Oscars this year; I felt disapointed with myself. All I saw that was nominated was Avatar and Up. I need to see more movies. I'm much more interested in the Hurt Locker over this, but I seems like a good movie... maybe not my type of movie (uber depressing), but looks good.
