I LOVE Naruto. I recommend jump the fillers, they're pretty boring. I also read the Manga.

I use to be really into Naruto, but haven't for years. The show went really down hill after the time gap.

I would recommend Naruto to alot of people based on its earlier greatness, but now(well recent years) it has flopped and the same can be said about Bleach.

I really Like an Anime called "Kinos Journey" it's a bit random at times in the sense that random bits of un-necessary text pop up, but besides that I think it's brilliant. The episodes don't really link together either, which I like as each episode is almost like its own little anime.

I love both series from Naruto. I especially like the direction of Shippuden. Only reason why I didn't recommend it or Bleach because they are commitments to watch hehe.

I think the beginning of Naruto was great, then when Sasuke leaves the village it becomes a bit boring, but now it's Amazing. Sasuke vs Itachi, Jiraiya vs Pain, it's wonderful. I reccomend you to watch some of the newer episodes (NOT FILLERS*, THEY'RE HORRIBLE), i think you might like it.

*To anyone who desn't know what Fillers are, they're episodes that are not based on the Manga, made because the Naruto Anime Production goes faster than the Manga Production.

Hey Pete, I'm going to try to name some anime's that haven't been mentioned that are some of my favorites. I don't know if you'll like them because I would consider myself more of a fan of older anime (Between 1980 to 1997). I don't really watch as much anime as what I used to, but here are some of my favorites and I hope some of these are up your alley.

Dominion Tank Police
New Dominion Tank Police

This anime borders along the lines of cyberpunk. I highly recommend the original series over the new series. It is pretty much a police force armed with tanks to take on city crime. A lot of the characters are memorable and the humor in the series is top notch.

Macross Plus

This anime pretty much has one of the most beautiful anime soundtracks I have ever heard. When you combine Yoko Kanno's Music with the Israel Philharmonic orchestra is a match made in heaven. The action is intense and it has one of my favorite mech battles in all of anime from my personal opinion.

Slayers
Slayers Next
Slayers Tri
Slayers OAV's

Each is an anime series that is 26 episodes long, and it takes the classical elements of any fantasy rpg and puts it into a wonderful comical series. Every episode is always full of action with plenty of laugh out loud moments, so its one I would definitely recommend.

In terms of anime films, ones i would definitely recommend that haven't been mentioned are:

The Professional: Golgo 13

If you bypass all the over top the violence and the good amount of nudity. You'll actually see a very compelling story of tragedy and determination. The movie is really dark and the animated violence is very graphic but I love the story of this film and it has a very excellent ending.

Venus Wars

This is one animated film that feels like it keeps going and going. It is full of action with non-stop action with an awesome feel good ending.

Lensman

I actually enjoyed this movie, but its not for everyone. The animation may seem a little bland but it actually has a good story, but is a film that shows its age. It is kind of a little like star wars, but it is full of action and can have a few humorous moments as well.

I grew up watching Lensman and Tank Police when Sci-Fi had the Robot Carnival back in the day. I remember playing Street Fighter on my SNes one thanks giving then watching the Anime festival on Sci-Fi ( Lensman, Robot Carnival, Tank Police ).

It is what hooked me to Japanese story lines. Lensman is actually an old, old book series not even Japanese. Not many people like Lensman but I love it.

Hey pete, I know your looking for short episodic animes and people have suggested naruto and bleach with well over 50 episodes each. I just picked up the Outlaw star anime which is 26 episodes. I used to watch this on Cartoon network for the short time it was on but i never got to see most of the episodes. Anyways I highly recommend it. I also got to recommend Cowboy Bebop one of the best animes ever. It also clocks in at 26 episodes.

Although this might be stretching it.A great anime series is Monster.72 episodes but the quality will have you hooked by episode 6.Don't just take my word for it. Check out reviews online and ask around, its an amazing series.
I feel the power, it high fives my face.

I'm not a huge Anime nut by any means but I like some of the movies and you don't have to dedicate yourself to an entire series. I would recommend

Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Akira
Steamboy
Ghost in the Shell
Howl's Moving Castle

I'm not a gigantic anime fan, but I do like and recommend:

Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Azumanga Daioh (seems a bit out of place with the rest of this list :P)
Paranoia Agent (extremely underrated)
and Ghost in the Shell.

Oh, and Akira and pretty much any Hayao Miyazaki animated film.

Got to +1 Azumanga Daioh, it's a bit cutesy but too good to miss. A nice break from the usual lolly anime form, it's just good (mostly) clean fun.

I'd also whole heartedly recommend:

Death Note
Chobits

And a bunch of others I can't remember the name of right now.

There was one that was a bit like Saw meets Running Man which escapes me now, it was a room full of people and they all sort of teleported there in a pretty grusome fashion and had to kill someone else to survive or something. It was pretty good anyway!

I'm not a big anime person, but I have to recommend Baccano!

It's a small 16 episode series.
It's about the mafia, bootlegging, etc.
Set in 1930s Chicago.
Starts off confusing, but very rewarding if you stick with it.
The dub is much better than the sub.
All the episodes are on youtube.
One of the characters is essentially the Joker.

Other shows I recommend have to be Azumanga Daioh, FMA, Cowboy Bebop, and Monster.
For movies: Anything by Miyazaki and Satoshi Kon

I know you are really into Macross, but I was wondering if you could give some reccommendations on some of your favorite anime series? I prefer shows that clock in at under 30 episodes (so that way I have a chance of finishing the series), I also love feature length films that have no connection to any pre-existing series.
Why don't you try Baccano? I watched the whole thing on a road trip and thought it was great. If you don't want something to drag on forever, try it out. Elfen Lied is a little different but also short and well worth a shot in my opinion. I suppose I'll mention Hellsing to just in case you haven't seen it.

Guys you totally have to check out Gungrave. Its an anime based off the video game series Gungrave. I would describe it as the godfather, mixed with Hellsing and Cowboy Bebop.

Another I would recommend is Wolfs Rain. Its more of a thinkers anime, but its great!
