Ok, here we go....

Tenchi Muyo, the original ova's.
Berserk
Lodoss......awesome!
Bubblegum Crisis...the original series.....as well as AD Police...
Azumanga Daioh....bizarre, but great comedy
Movies......anything by master Miyazaki....evn his lesser films blow all others out of the water......start at Nausicaa, and you'll never go back. This is SUPERB anime. Superb cinema. Period.
Golgo 13: The Professional
Golgo 13: Queen Bee....some say sleazy, I say SUPER COOL.

Good luck in your findings...

I second Bobogolgo13's recommend of all of Miyazaki's films... but I think you should start even earlier with the Lupin III movie - The Castle of Cagliostro. I have never seen any Lupin III other than this one so you can follow it just fine.

Nausicca is awesome. Castle in the Sky is amazing. I just watched it for the first time last week.

After Johnny recommended Macross (I watched this episode more recently) I watched the first episode of Macross for free on hulu and I was impressed. Now I plan on checking more of it out.

Are there any series that are similar in tone to Miyazaki's films?

I have not not watched a lot of anime. I have seen all of Cowboy Bebop and enjoyed it. I most recently tried to get into Rurouni Kenshin because I heard that was cool. After I netflixed the first 4 episodes I decided it was just too goofy.

Rurouni Kenshin gets pretty serious after about 25 episodes. There are some junkie episodes that deal with just funny situations but it does follow a definite storyline after a bit.

I know you are really into Macross, but I was wondering if you could give some reccommendations on some of your favorite anime series? I prefer shows that clock in at under 30 episodes (so that way I have a chance of finishing the series), I also love feature length films that have no connection to any pre-existing series.
Two of my favorite feature films are Fist of the North Star (Hokuto-no Ken) and Grave of the Fireflies (Hotaru-no Haka).

The Fist of the North Star movie is a stand alone film, but there is at least one series out there as well.

I actually saw Grave of the Fireflies for the first time as part of a World History course at UC Davis. It immedeately won a place among my favorite movies of all time.

For the hardcore fantasy crowd who also like rpgs:

You can't go past 12 Kingdoms/Juni Kokki easily the best series ever.

Do keep in mind that the series is based off one of Japan's greatest selling fantasy novel series which has 7 books in total (with Books 1,2,4,6 spliting into 2 volumes cause they were huge).

It goes for 45 episodes.

The downside of the anime series is that only Books 1 - 4 were adapted.

Nevertheless its a fantastic story with great characters. I cannot recommend it enough.

Wow, mentioned are so many animes that I need to look into! Samurai anime sounds especially cool.

I'm not as anime savvy as others, but I can definitely recommend Death Note. It is such an intense, suspenseful, and intelligent anime.

I'd also recommend Bleach, and Fullmetal Alchemist. Currently I'm watching Rurouni Kenshin, which I definitely recommend (especially for you Samurai lovers).

Death note. I love that anime. It's my current favorite. My next favorite would be Claymore. I recently found it, and I probably have watched it about 5 times now. Its great.
One I've been watching lately is Trinity Blood. Good anime, Nice art style.
However, I find the story a bit hard to follow. I'm not done though, so may be it clears things up for me soon.

I'm just going to recommend Noein. It's a sci-fi anime directed by Kazuki Akane. He has worked on many of the original Gundam projects, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Ergo Proxy. I find it very strange that very few people have seen this.

Here's a little story preview without giving anything away.

Fifteen years in one of the possible futures, a violent battle takes place between two "time-spaces": La'cryma, a possible future of our own universe, and Shangri-La, another possible dimension fifteen years after ours, intent on the destruction of all space and time. The key to stopping Shangri'la's invasion is a mysterious object known as the "Dragon Torque". A group known as the "Dragon Knights" is sent through space and time to find it. In the present, twelve-year old Haruka and her friend YĆ« are contemplating running away from home when they meet a member of the Dragon Knights named Karasu...

And it's exactly the right length at 24 episodes. I recommend all of you reading this to go check it out! :D

I'm not extremely well educated in the area, and a lot have been said already. But my favorite is probably Air Gear. It's a shame it's only 25 episodes =(.

Also enjoyed Genshiken and the craziness of Love Hina. Have yet to watch a lot of the classic stuff though.

If anyone likes the Capcom shooter U.N. Squadron, check out the Area 88 OVA's, especially the 3rd which is really a feature length move. The new one's, eh, I have to say watch the old originals first.

This is what made me love UN Squadron, because back in the day, I had the VIZ Comics of Area 88, and loved the backstory and characters.

Code Geass (Most Recommended ever...)
Samurai Champloo (Highly Recomended)
Berserk (Very Highly Recomended, Adult)
Trigun
Soul Eater
Death Note (First half is awesome)
Claymore
Darker Than Black (good stuff here)
Princess Mononoke (Movie)
and Cowboy Bebop (everyone else mentioned it... I wanted to be like all of the cool kids and mention it too.)

Alright, so that is the list of Animes I recommend. Although you don't actually know me so you don't know if I have good taste in anime just trust me you should like every anime listed above.

I don't watch a lot of animes but the few that got me interested are:

Death Note: It's just such a thrill ride.

Ghost Hound: Really more of a psychological thriller anime, but it gets pretty creepy.

High School of the Dead: If you love zombie apocalypse stuff then you will love this. I don't think you hear of zombie animes very often.

All these are available for stream on Netflix.
