I would check into Sony's HD cams around $500-$1000, or the Canon Vixia line in the same price range. I do believe that Splattertrigger uses one of the Sony models. That is if you are looking to have a fairly professional cam. Otherwise i would look into the Flip HD, or Kodak Zi8 for under $200 the quality is amazing for the price, and great for Youtube and beginning users, because they only have like 4 buttons on them lol. Keep in mind if you want to edit HD video, then chances are that Windows Movie Maker won't do the trick. You'll have to invest in some software as well, unless you already have it. I'm happy with Adobe Premiere Elements at around $80, and i've had the opportunity to work with Adobe CS4 Master Suite which is an amazing piece of software, but very pricey! Sony has Vegas as well for editing videos, and there are some lesser known brands that have great software suites out too for much lower prices. |

I have had a lot of people recommend the flip HD to me which is really affordable from amazon. I think I am going to get one when I have the extra cash. I am also glad to see the post from eSkilliam about windows movie maker not being ideal because that is all I have. Guess I'll check out Adobe Premiere Elements now

One of the many Youtubers that I follow, Blunty3000, did a review on a nice looking camcorder from JVC that has most of the features you would want, including the ability to record in HD. From what I have seen, these range in cost from $250 to $500, depending on the features you need. Here is his video review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qW_2oB09oD8 |

I use to have a JVC HD cam as well that cost me a good 500, and it was terrible, it's special format just gave me nothing but trouble, as well as when I would convert the file to work with other programs it made the video look TERRIBLE, and SO CHOPPY. I returned that puppy and quick. I have The Flip UltraHD 8GB 2 hour video, and so far it's great, I haven't really tinkered around with it too much as far as editing goes, but it has it's own VERY EASY to use software that comes right in the cam, and pops up with you plug it in via USB. It's VERY youtube friendly, and has a button where you can straight upload your vids to youtube, the video and audio for a camera that size is spectacular, BETTER than that dang 500 dollar cam. Though it's super basic, if you want to tinker around with white balance, and other modes and tones you can't. It's just a record and press and play type of camera, but as Eskilliam mentioned, you can get a program like Adobe Premiere if you want to do anything more fancy. Also for less than 200 bucks, it's a great starter cam, depending on what you want to do, I find that it performs better than the Kodak Zi8 when I was messing with my friends, but it all comes down to preference. |

Yeah, WMM doesn't accept the HD formats 'Yet'. There is an HD version of WMM out there, but from what i can find, it's not downloadable, and you only get it with certain computer, and it's not a standard part of windows. |

In that case, I would jump on youtube and look at the quality of some of the cameras, just do a search for the name of the camera, and switch your options to HD videos only, then look for the ones that say review, or test footage, or things like that. I honestly would start out with the Canon VIXIA's. They have great quality, and run $500-$1000 depending on which model you get and where you buy it. I would love to have one but at this point can't see spending $500+ on another camcorder. |
