My opinion on digital downloads is that they can be considered part of a collection, but not in the same sense as a physical copy of the game. I am the same about music; I don't consider albums I download to be in the same league as the CD albums I own. Hard drives die, systems get sold, and knowing how companies are nowadays, it's unlikely you'll be able to transfer your digital games onto the next generation of consoles. But what constitutes a part of a collection is subjective, so many people lump their physical games into the same category as the ones they have downloaded. As for "Game of the Year" editions, I have nothing against them and I actually think they are a good value if you are just getting the game for the first time. For example, I bought the GOTY editions of Little Big Planet and Call of Duty 4, and I don't see a problem with the cases being slightly different. I am not dogmatic about getting the first pressing of every game I own. But I agree with Porcelain about how the Xbox 360 "Platinum Hits" titles are terrible; they shrink the artwork and put the games in grey cases. I don't like how the PS3 games come in bright red cases either. But if that's all I can get, I won't lose sleep over it. My only ironclad requirement when it comes to buying games is that they need to be complete. I'll never understand how/why people can lose cases and manuals for their games, especially since they are keep-cases and not the cardboard boxes that NES/SNES games came in. |

Andsy I understand where you're coming from with digital copies. When I do my collection videos I never say that I have eye create(downloaded from the playstation store) nor that I have Zombie Tycoon or any of the eye camera games. I don't count my download of movies in my movie collection either because I do not have a physical copy to show. But none the less they are all in my collection |

Good question, I actually like to have both versions, especially if they are cheap. If I buy the original version first (lets say its a new release) then later when the GOTY comes out, I buy that one too. Same goes for collectors editions and limited editions. If there is more then 1 (like Halo 3) I want all versions, normal, collectors and legendary. |

I dont like platinum games (or all the other things thay may be called) but i like the fact that they excist, beacus when youre in the video game store its get more of a treasure hunt, cuz youre more picky whit the choise of game, its get harder to find the games you really want this might sound weird to many ppl

Good point, when a game is hard to find it makes it all the more sweeter when you do end up finding it. Its the thrill of the hunt, nothing beats that feeling when you find either the game your looking for, or a rare game in the exact state you want it in. |

If I had to choose between a platinum hit, original release or a gamestop cased game right now, of course I'd go with the original release. Not because it looks good on my shelf or because it doesn't stick out, but because I want the money I'll be spending to be worth it. I would pick up the platinum hit if it's much cheaper, and I don't see anything wrong with the gamestop cases, I'd still proudly put it in my shelf and be like "I played this game and that's all that matters". But if you have 20 bucks and you have the choice to buy either a complete copy or an empty case, you'd go with the complete one. |

Actually no. In fact I have New Super Mario Bros. Wii fronted on my shelf becuase I like the case so much. Its diffrent. I also love the fact that Nintendo doesn't do the "Greatest Hits" for the Wii cases like Sony and Microsoft do, but The NSMBW case looks awesome becuase its the ONLY colored case for the Wii right now. Maybe Galaxy 2 will be Green and Metroid Other M will have a Blue case. Maybe Nintendo is going to start doing this for their first party games, but NSMBW looks 10X's better than those crappy red PS2 cases IMO. |

I really don't get it, so collectors doesn't count platinum/GH games because of their color and how they stand out in their collection, but it's ok to have a different colored case as long as it's not a re-release or if it's the only one with a different colored case? Also, one person is saying that it's not like discrimination at all, but one person is saying that it is and all GH games are inferior. SIGH. What makes a GOTY version different from a Platinum version? |

There is a big diffrence. All PS2 cases are black. Wether they are the original releases or the Greatest Hits releases. The Original's look nicer becuase the case it totally black, but the GH version has a red theme and it really clashes with the rest of the case and looks akward. When I said I liked the NSMBW cover its becuase the whole entire case is red and contrasts nicely with all the white Wii cases. There is a big diffrence between CLASH and CONTRAST. I love the color red, but I hate the way Sony used it on their covers. |

Well IMO black and red go nicely together. Tis why I think a black car with red rims looks good. Black car red rims red flame job and red exhaust pipes and a red spoiler same with PS2 GH games, Every occasional red looks good mixed in with the black. |

I despise the Platinum Hits packaging for the 360; they just look terrible. And they're not even consistent! I've seen some where the only difference (besides the actual case itself) is the top bar and the spine, but others have shrunk down artwork, on top of a grey and green background. It's just stupid. The only good things about them are when they include added content, like DLC (e.g., Mass Effect, Forza Motorsport 2, etc.,....). The best examples I've seen in this thread are the comparisons between 1st printings of books, and reissues of guitars; both are excellent examples. |

Still no one on the 'it doesn't matter' side of the topic has answered the question we keep asking. Greatest hits version and original version same condition, side by side, same price. Which one would you buy and why? |

Downloads? Collection? I don't think so. Having a Huge Collection of NES Roms is just bullshit, and it isn't collecting in my opinion. |

To me it doesn't matter which I buy. Why? Because to me it is the same damn game when I put it in the console. Now does that answer your question? |

It does answer the question, but in a rather abrupt / rude way. Would it kill you to be less conflictual? Personally, I'd hope that the original copy would be cheaper. I'll use Fable 2 as an example: Fable 2. Sealed. OG packaging. Fable 2 : GOTY Edition. All DLC included. Sealed. Same price? I'd go for the GOTY edition. Extra bang for my buck. However, on games like... Chrono Trigger: OG Chrono Trigger. SNES. Chrono Trigger NDS. Same game, NDS has extra content. Same price? I'd go OG. SNES. It's a case by case judgement for me. Personally. I do my best to only buy and collect original printings. I do understand that many people have the point that it doesn't matter if you have the Original printing version or a Platinum/Greatest Hits/Player's Choice because it is the same game so what's the difference right? True...true it is the same game, but it is an eye pleasing aesthetic matter to me. Platinum/Greatest Hits/Player's Choice games stick out like sore thumbs on the shelf and are eyesores. I have OCD and have to have my collection organized in a certain way that is nicely structured and pleasing to the eyes. I can't handle looking at the oddly placed 'burn your eyes out' RED PS2 games, the 'bird crap/french's mustard' YELLOW GC games, and the extreme opposite WHITE/SILVER vs green/black contrasting Platinum Xbox games. This is just my opinion though based on my own personal tastes. To each his own. |

Well, that's sort of a different situation. GOTY edition used to be kind of like a greatest hits type deal, but usually the only difference was a small symbol or something saying GOTY. A lot of collectors for those older games prefer the original in that situation, but some don't mind. Newer GOTY versions have the DLC included, which almost puts it in the ballpark of being a different game, and in the case of Fable II, the GOTY edition is not going to be a Platinum Hits version, at least not initially. I would think that most true collectors would want the original and the GOTY releases, provided the money is available. We're mostly referring to the Greatest Hits/Platinum hit's version here. In the case of Chrono Trigger, that is a re-release on a different system, and I think that falls right in as being a regular game just like any other.(and for that matter Chrono Trigger is a game that anyone should want more than one copy of anyway ![]() You mentioned DLC in an earlier post, and that is kind of a killer for collectors, because it's inevitable that at some point the downloads are going to be taken down, or the system is going to break, or something along those lines, and the DLC will be lost forever, due to no doings of the collector. In the case of some current systems, some games are starting to require you to be online to play. Think if that were the case for any original xbox game. As of this month those games would no longer be playable in any fashion because original xbox online was taken away. And yes PS3GirlGamer1990 was very rude as she is so often, and doesn't seem to be able to debate anything without taking that attitude. And to answer her, no she did not answer my question. I asked which one. "Any because it doesn't matter" doesn't answer it at all. Which box do you pick up and take to the register? I don't see you flipping a coin and saying heads for the one on the left or tails for the one on the right. You will have an inclination to grab one or the other when you see them. Saying 'Any' is a cop out because you want to hold to your opinion of "it doesn't matter" and claiming either would force that opinion to be swayed one way or the other, but at stores such as gamestop you run into this situation every time you look at the used game shelves. So which one do you grab. I don't collect 'per say' for current systems, but I still hold to the collectors mentality when I buy games, and prefer the original version if it's available. If I collected for them, it would be mandatory. |

I would consider a goty version if it was available. The spine of the game is what really gets me. The clashing of a one yellow GC game in your collection or a red ps2 game kinda gets me. As far as other colored cases like the NSMB you dont have a choice and in this case it wouldnt matter to me. In the case of digital copies of games I wouldnt count emulators in my collection. If we are talking about full downloadable games I would consider that in a colllection aside from my physical collection. That would be my downloadable collection. Still I wouldnt really count this as a collectors point of view but I would as a gamer since these games arent yours in stone per say. Say if your hardrive were to crap out or your xbox or when online service eventually dies on this system too. Physical copies are always better because you have a guarentee that as long as your copy is playable then you can play it. |

Wow alot of comment's posted here. Seems like im not the only one that dislikes the ugly grey/red greatest hits or platinum games. Well i do prefer the original copys of games but if theres a console that i don't really collect as much on then i don't really care, or if the game that im after is really really expensive, then i rather buy the platinum. |
