So, what's your favourite game in the Castlevania series? Mine is the original Castlevania game on the NES. I know people may see that as insane, but there is something about it that just makes me want to play it. The other ones are fine, but if I had a choice of playing, I would choose the original NES version. |

My favorite Castlevania games is actually Order of Ecclesia. I just love everything about that game; the dark art direction, the rewarding difficulty, the awesome music, the visual variety in level design. I think this being my first castlevania game is also a big part of it being my favorite, lol. |

I would have to say that Order of Ecclesia is my favorite castlevania thus far. I haven't played a lot of the castlevania games to be honest, I haven't even played Symphony of the night, but the biggest thing I love about Order to Ecclesia is that it brings something back to the castlevania series I haven't seen in a very long time and that is extreme difficulty. When I think Castlevania, I think of the original games for the nes especially Castlevania and Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse and how difficult they were. Healing items were very few and far between and it was incredibly difficult to beat a boss without even getting hit. I think the ds games kind of eased things a bit, with buying potions and what not. I actually found portrait of ruin and dawn of sorrow pretty easy. Order of Ecclesia however, took the difficulty and ramped it up 10x. You could pretty much die on every level, and a lot of bosses especially very early on in the game you had to be patient and wait for the right moment to strike. Even the extra dungeons in the game were insanely hard. Another aspect of this game that made it incredibly difficult which is one of the reasons why I loved it, in order to complete the main game, one of the things you had to do to get a full 100% complete item list is that you had to beat every boss without getting hit. When you defeated a boss without getting hit, you would get a medal for that monster. These were extremely annoying especially with bosses such as the Sand Fish, Shadow Monster, Grim Reaper, and of course Dracula. I'll also give a nod for Super Castlevania IV for the snes for having an excellent music score, and having fairly difficult bosses especially later on in the game. The same rules applies it was very hard to beat these bosses without getting hit. A lot of these bosses were close calls. We all know about the secret before you reach dracula and that definitely made the fight a little easier. To be honest Dracula wasn't as hard in this game compared to other games but it is still a great game nonetheless. |

Symphony of the Night, by far. It's still extremely impressive, acessible, and relevant today. |

Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse is my top pick out of the series. I love everything about the game and played the crap out of it when I was a kid. I remember playing the game multiple times in order to get different characters, choosing different paths and trying to find all of the hidden items. I have warm memories connected to this game, and playing it over 20 years later, it still holds up as a well made, enjoyable and very challenging platformer. Second on my list would be Castlevania IV for the SNES. I got it when the system first launched and I was blown away by the graphics, music and the amazing controls; AVGN was right on the money when he said that this game has the best controls out of all the games. |

Symphony of the Night and Akumajo Dracula X: Chi no Rondo would be my 2 all time favorite Castlevania games. Castlevania IV on the SNES or Castlevania: Bloodlines on the Geneses would be tied for 2nd place. |

Like many, Symphony of the night! I love when they introduced more RPG elements to the game, and Alucard is just damn awesome. The music, the atmosphere, the different powers, the castle itself, all very well done. Also I'm a fan of Aria of Sorrow, that was a really solid game for the GBA. |

Its really close between SOTN and Dawn of Sorrow. I really got addicted to DOS and leveling up my attacks by farming demon souls. SOTN has an amazing sense of castle design, layout, graphics, music, its all great. Less addicting than DOS, but in terms of design, I like SOTN better. |

I never played DOS. I do, however, have SotN on PSP (downloaded from PSN.) While SotN is good, I don't see why so many people think it's the best. I actually prefer Super Castlevania 4.I think this because it has better control. You feel like you are Simon Belmont. Super Castlevania 4 shows the true strength of the Super Nintendo. |

Bang on the money there! Simons quest was my first castlevania so i have a sweet spot for it but SOTN is still my fav. Dawn of sorrow is a close contender, as pete pointed out, the soul harvesting is just awesome. |
