Does anyone still rent video games?; growing older = renting abolished?

Back in the day when the Super Nintendo was strong, I used to rent games all the time. Being a kid, I didn't have enough money so I'd have to rent them in order to play a variety of games. However, as I grew older, it seemed like buying games and growing a collection was a bigger thing to do once I could earn money.

Does anyone still rent games or does everyone prefer to just buy them outright to grow a collection? I personally don't rent anymore, I just wait until prices drop enough to where I can feel justified to purchase them to play them.

Same for me. I was a rental kid and teen. The last game I rented was Siren on the PS2 and Resident Evil Zero on the cube when they were new. I haven't rented a game since. Hell half the places in town that rented games have closed down. Blockbusters is the only one here that still does, maybe a hollywood on the other side of town.

I think it is pretty much dead. Gamefly is the new king of the hill. I'm not on that bandwagon as I can afford the games I want.

Sometimes I get them from my local library. Checked out Left 4 Dead yesterday and tomorrow suppose to be getting Dead to Rights Retribution.

I use Gamefly for renting games. I still buy lots of games, but Gamefly is great for playing games that I'm unsure of whether I'll like it or not. Games like Assassins Creed 2, God of War, Mario, etc will be bought day 1, but games like Alpha Protocol, Dead to Rights Retribution, Aliens vs Predator, etc are the types of games I'll rent to see if I like it first.

I dont think anyone really rents games from places like Blockbuster or local rental places anymore. They are losing businesses at a shocking rate. Hollywood videos are closing all over the country. These places were great to have in the 80s-late 90s. Nowadays these places are way too expensive with like game rentals being like 8 bucks a game for like 5 days plus the hastle of driving the game ot be dropped. With places like gamefly and netflix etc. it is much more convinent to handle renting games and movies online and streaming online most of the time with unlimited rentals and no late fees. This eliminates the hastle of going anywhere and gives you access to movies from your own home.

I predict we will see all rental stores like blockbusters and other places (not online stores) going out of business for good within the next 5 years.

Blockbuster does movie and game rentals online now, sorta like a gamefly/netflix combined. Not sure how good it is though.

I used to rent all the time, until I found the joys of used games.

Why pay $10 to rent a game for a week, when you can have the game for life for $12?

I never really rented games that much but I definitely don't look down upon it. But everyone is right, all these stores are closing which is sad in a sense since an era is ending but with the economy and prices as high they are, what elso do you expect. But I hate how you can RENT a movie/game from your house, how much more lazy can America really get, technology is moving way too fast, in some places for the better but in a lot for the worse.

Well, maybe if they wouldn't charge so much for renting games, they wouldn't have to close down.
I remember when it was $2 a day

I occasionally rent games for the reason of wanting to play them but not wanting to spend £30-£40 because I may not like it. Some of the games I rented are:

Need for Speed Shift
Terminator Salvation
Need for Speed Most Wanted
Left 4 Dead

Ds Games!

I never liked renting games, or even borrowing anything, either from a place like the library or a friend. I have to own things for some reason. Even if someone lent me something to play or read, I'd go out and buy it once I gave it back.

The last game I rented was Killer Instinct on the SNES from Blockbuster, which was over 15 years ago. I don't like renting games because nothing would suck worse than getting engrossed and then having to give the game back. If it's something I really want, I'll buy it outright or wait to buy it used. I think renting games is a tease!

I use Gamefly to play new games that I know I won't pay full price for. I will usually buy the games I like when the price drops.

The only rental places around me only have ps2 and ps1 games, would love to be able to rent new games though. tried gamefly once and it wasn't a good experience. rented 3 games, 2 arrived damaged and wouldn't work.

I don't think I have ever rented a game in my life, but maybe one or two when I was younger.

I hate the idea of paying and not owning something.

I frequently rent, however I never pay for my rents.

Here in the UK, we have a 'loyalty card' for our grocery shopping at Sainsburys, you rack up points, and you can redeem your points against rents @ Blockbusters.

Would spend £6.25 on a week rent, instead every so often I spend 500 of these nectar points :)

When I was younger I used to live behind a mom and pop rental store and used to go down there everyday to survey the video games (I can recall the cover of almost every PS2 title,) then rent one every few weeks. That had closed down around the time the current generation of consoles came out, so I went on to buying used games. The Hollywood Video near us has always had ridiculous prices, and, as they're currently going out of business, they're asking at least 10$ over the current going-price of many used 360 games- even though they don't have the normal cases or manuals.

I haven't rented games since I was probably 9 years old, which was 16 years ago. LONG TIME! A lot of places near me shut down, and the nearest block buster by me still takes two buses which in the winter sucks really badly since it can get so cold here.

Just as browland said I mostly have a problem with getting so involved in the game only to bring it back, I also find that renting or even burrowing from friends creates this "Ok I have a limit on how much time I have to beat this game." I hate feeling rushed, or forced to play a game, and not have my own sense of time of I'll get to it when I get to it sort of deal, it takes the enjoyment out of it.

I try and play games at friends houses, do a lot of reading up on a title, check out a late of gameplay vids before I purchase a game, because just as it is not renting is not the way to go for me.

The last game I rented was Need for Speed Most Wanted, when the 360 first came. Out. I thought that the games were soo expensive. So I rented it, and I loved it. I finally bought it like 3 years later.

Unfortunately, I find myself doing this more than actually playing the games I have- I've heavily researched the console RPG as a whole, yet haven't beaten half as many as I'd like.

I rent allot of games. In south Africa you can spend R200 for unlimited returns and take outs of games from all 3 major consoles. You can also spend R99 to take out 3 games per month.Seems worth it, especially since I buy most of my games 2nd hand and new games only take about 3 weeks to get on the rental system.
I feel the power, it high fives my face.
