Hello Forum, this is my first post on this site. I could not find a suitable topic suited to collectors so I placed it here. I am 14 years old in Ireland. I am on my summer holidays and recently saw "Petes game room" video and loved the idea of a games room. I have consent from my Dad and Im allowed to take up the project. I would like to build shelves out of wood and make everything from scratch for my room. I have a small collection to begin with and a small budget to begin with. I still might have to overcome my Dads fear of the internet. My Dad will not buy from Amazon. Nevermind Ebay. He does not have a PayPal so I believe he might need a kick. Any tips or advice would be nice. I will collect anything, plushies, toys, action figures, consoles, magazines. |

It may be hard to change his opinion on e-bay being that your buying from people most of the time, but try to show him around amazon's website so he can see it's a store where your dealing with a company and distributors and return policies, not just someone selling something they don't want any more. Make sure to show him the thousands of reviews from people that use the site all the time as well, and maybe buy something cheap just to show him you'll get what you paid for in the mail, your money doesn't just go away. |

I have a friend who lives in Whales, and like you his parents did not like buying from the internet. He wanted to buy a bunch of SNES and Nintendo 64 games, but instead he started his collection with games of current generations consoles that he could buy nearby. Just a thought, try current generation games first. That idea of buying something cheap first is a good one, good thinking KingJames88.

I collect for the DS (check my signature) for a number of reasons such as finding games for very cheap (quality games I mean, not just any garbage), and for the fact that there are very unique games that you won't find on other platforms, as well as a huge library of extremely varied games from every genre you can think of, of even genres you can't think of. Not to mention I can play it anywhere or while watching something on tv. Enough of me for now, it seems I misunderstood. I didn't realize it was the internet in general he didn't trust, I thought it was just that he was worried about paying for things and getting ripped off or maybe never receiving them. How old do you have to be to get a checking account there? It may be quicker/easier to open a small checking account in your name once your able to do so it would be you doing the online stuff. Other than that, I say you can do something like I do. I only put small amounts of money into my checking account at a time when I know I'll be buying something. This way, I can only spend what's in there, and if for some reason I manage to have my account and pin numbers stolen (even though you don't enter your pin number anywhere online), the worst that can happen is I lose the money I put in there separate, and I know it's time for a new account. I don't know of anyone who has had problems with identity theft or anything like that if just using something like amazon. That type of stuff occurs more often on websites that were built to steal your info in the first place. |

Yeah very true King James and great ideas everyone. I definitely would not push your pops to do eBay at first. My dad hates that although I may just end up making my own PayPal to get some stuff on there. But yeah Amazon's definitely great. Another thing is just ask friends and everyone one around you if they have any old games that they don't wanna anymore (about 50 to 75 percent always do) and you can buy them off them for extremely cheap let alone eve free sometimes! Also look into buying some newer consoles in your local trusted gaming stores as well. I wish you the best of luck in this great hobby!

My dad use to be afraid of doing anything on the internet, but he has gotten over that. Being a European gamer makes things a lot tougher for you. Expect high prices and things to be a lot harder to find. Maybe a European could give you some advice as I am an American. Get ready to go on a hell of a journey, but maybe you should stick to modern games for now. I didn't get into collecting classic gaming until I had my own debit card, bank accounts, and started going to college. You may be a bit young for that especially if your dad isn't willing to buy online. |

I have already asked for broken games for the boxes etc... proper games from the more generous and I'll be asking he family if they are willing to sell.( i know they will give them to me) "Also look into buying some newer consoles in your local trusted gaming stores as well" should I buy used? My history is flooded with dodgy used games that are too good to be true (as in broken) I will resolve the online issue. |

If it means anything to you, about 95% of my games I buy used. Since I'm buying them all the time, it helps to save money, and as long as they're complete and working I'm willing to buy used, and usually wait to buy a game until I find it used. Just don't buy anything from china or hong kong and you'll avoid a lot of problems. |

If you have any income yourself. Or even just go get your Dad to get you a "pre paid visa/mastercard" They sell them at staples or grocery stores, or even just go ask your bank for one. Thats how I get things from the internet. I just go to my bank and put 100$ on a pre paid visa. Then buy like 10 games from amazon.ca lol No need for your dads credit card. And once the money on your card runs out, just get a new one
