Arcade Memories

I was looking through a dusty old photo album this evening when I happened upon a picture of me, aged 12, with a bunch of friends at an old arcade that I frequented back in the early 90's. This brought back a wave of memories and it made me nostalgic for the days when video arcades were THE place to hang out. Nowadays, at least where I live, it is rare to see an arcade outside of some machines they have set up in movie theaters.

Nothing beats an old arcade that I hung around. It was a place called Louis's Submarine Shop, a shop located in a Greek neighborhood in Toronto (Chester and Danforth for anyone local). It had a small sub shop in the front and a large selection of arcade games in the back, where you would usually be able to find me after school and on most weekends. The place was dirty, smelly and run by a very ornery Greek husband and wife who didn't so much talk to you but shout things at you, usually "get out of here you little shits" or something to that effect. However, they had the best selection of new and exciting arcade titles bar none, and this kept me and my friends coming back and spending our entire allowance every week. It was the first place I knew of that had Mortal Kombat II and I played that to death, usually playing person after person and having a large group of people behind me watching. Good times. Sadly, the place was destroyed in a fire in the mid 90's and a martini bar now stands in it's place. I miss arcades for the atmosphere and the sense of excitement you get - too bad that this experience is a rarity nowadays.

Does anyone else here have a favorite arcade they hung (or continue to hang) around in? Any memories to share?

I never frequented any arcades really, but I visited them on and off when I could. I was born in 88, so arcades were already waning by the time I was in my teens.

I have one really vivid memory for whatever reason. I was really young, and my mom took me to an arcade for an hour or so. I got my quarters, made the rounds and played some random games. I got down to my last quarter, and there was a special "value" section for 25-cent games. The one I picked to play was Donkey Kong, and it's the only game I remember playing that day. I loved it, and it's still probably my favorite arcade game. I really wish someday to own a Donkey Kong cabinet.
