Hi I'm thinking about starting a YouTube channel so figured I would make an account here.

As I say I am thinking about starting a gaming channel on YouTube but the only thing holding me back is I'm kinda worried that my friends may come across my videos and hold it against me in some way. Obviously it is a bit geeky and I accept that but I don't like the idea of being ridiculed in any way because of it. If you have a channel how do you deal with this? Or do you just not care? :P

Same problem here. Make an account with a username your friends wouldn't reconize. I go by 1in6win and my friends have never found it. Don't make a point to show your youtube channel when you have friends around if it bothers you.

I say go for it. I did even though I was nervous at first. welcome to forum, I'm Ross by the way. Nice to meet you. :)

I'll agree with Ross here, it is nerve racking to make a YT channel knowing that it could potentially be seen by many many people. I felt the same when I put up my first vid, but after you've made a couple you start to get the hang of it and you look forward to making your next one. And plus, everyone here on PGRF is really helpful and supportive and if you ever have any issues then theres always someone on here that will be willing (and happy) to help.

Anyway, welcome to the forum, I'm sure you'll enjoy your time here!

Thanks guys. I just get the feeling I'll come across in my videos differently to how I act in real life, then my friends will make sure they mention it to me. Maybe I'm just being paranoid :P

Some of my irl friends would give crap for it, but whatever. I am a sports type guy and many of my sports oriented friends would find my hobby super geeky, but it is fine with me.

I agree with many of the points stated in the comments before this one! Yeah, at first it may seem nerve racking but seriously once you have a few videos up, know what you're doing you really don't think about it anymore and just do it :)

I was super nervous when I started, I didn't know how people would react to my videos, if I'd get any hate comments, if people would laugh at me if I made a mistake etc... But I have been on Youtube for almost a year now and everyone who has game across my channel has been very supportive :)

I hope you take all the great advice from this thread and create you're own Youtube channel, feel free to post the link on the forum for the members to check out ;)

I think you may be going about this the wrong way. I think you should make it and be proud of it, since it doesn't matter much in the long run what anyone thinks about it other than you. Go about it like your confident in doing it, not skeptical. People seeing you treat it like it's something great makes them a bit less likely to say anything, rather than if they see your unsure about it, in which case they're bound to say something then. If anyone would really bother you that much about it, then it seems maybe they're not friends with you, just friends with who they think you appear to be.

Thanks everyone. All great points and I think I'm going to make a channel soon. Possibly after E3 and maybe give my impressions on what happened. Thanks again everyone. Any more advice is much welcomed :P

I embraced the nerdity the second I decided to make a channel. I whore it out to my friends, not to whore it, but to make them realize that I was proud of it. The respected me for it and think it's cool that I love games and like to talk about them. Just make it known you are doing something you enjoy, and they probably won't say anything.

I'm just going through this at the moment myself and I have to agree with xbox360collections, the more you expose yourself to it the easier it gets.

In real life I was very, very shy when I was younger but after throwing myself into customer service work (painful as it was) I came out the other end more confident than ever.

Bottom line: Keep at it, you'll be stronger for it! ;)

Even if your not a confident type person, nobody needs to know that, just tell yourself you are and act like it. Before you know it, your confident in yourself and you'll be happy with what your doing.

Life is too short to worry about what other people think about your hobbies. Do what you love and love what you do. Anyone who is going to give you crap for a hobby needs to get a life.

I used to be like that about everything growing up, only doing what i thought others would find cool. do what you enjoy and don't worry about what anybody else thinks. if you want to make videos then go for it, as stated above if anyone would give you crap for a hobby there probably pretty insecure thereself.

Once you get people subbing your channel which is bound to happen if you keep your channel steady then one you will be more confident on this and two your friends cant really say much that would bother you. Cause yea your friends might think its geeky but a 100 or maybe a 1000 people would say otherwise.
Also really n8great321 is right. You have too do what you love while you can do it. Don't let your friends hold you back.
Check out my youtube channel for everything gaming but mostly PS2 :D
