Top 10 Best Games Ever; This thread is not about your favorite games and bias is not welcome!

We have had these threads on the forum, but I want this one to be different. I want our collective gaming minds to think of the 5 best games ever. These have nothing to do with your personal favorite games ever unless that game happens to be revolutionary, have great game play, music, graphics(for its time), and stood out so much that it beats out the other 10s of thousands of games that could not make this list.

Let me give an example. A game like Earthbound may be considered many people's favorite games of all time, but it has no place in this thread. Earthbound may be a great game and your personal favorite but it can't qualify for a position on the list because of the criteria stated before. There are many other games that you think are great and so do others, but unless it fits the criteria it will not be put on the list simply because it has to be a well rounded near perfect game in every category to be able to grace this list.

What do you guys think and please do not just list a game explain why. At the end of this thread hopefully we can come to a consensus. I will put my input once we get a few replies going.

Well I suppose FF7 would have to be on the list it had amazing graphics(at the time) was widely popular, had fantastic music, and very memorable characters.

I would say it is definitely arguable. Taking one of the most popular rpg franchises and bringing it into the 3D realm, did have great music, great graphics for it's time, the gameplay was great(though there are some who would disagree with this statement), great story.

*Note that the Great Story is only applicable to a genre where that matters. Super Mario Bros can go on this list if it makes the cut and that in no way had a great story lol, but an rpg to make the list would have to.

Well in accordance to the rules of the discussion:

1. Doom. This game essentially put atmosphere, great gameplay and great graphics into a blender and made a win shake. It was shareware for the 9 levels. You got 1/3 game for free or for a low cost disk at Babbages and walmart.

This game was actually going to be an FPS for Aliens the movie but they wanted to control the IP. While Wolfenstein 3d definitely helped FPS popular, Doom broke the bank. Copy cats have been capitalizing on Doom's success ever since.

2. Super Mario Brothers 3. Deep game play within a standard, time tested platforming game. There were tons of platforms for the time but they all were basically clones with either good control, or bad and a different story wrapped around them.

Mario 3 changed the game for many people. The success hasn't really been improved upon, only duplicated. It has some of the most endearing graphics of all the NES games. It's gameplay is tight and the suites were ingenious. Overworld became standard fair for many games to come.

3. Megaman. Rock Paper Shotgun baby. It was hard, it was immersive and it looked great. Not only did it set the world on fire, much like the Mario Brothers did but it was a great science fiction title. It made you believe in muscle memory and patience.

4. Metroid. Not many games can claim to have birthed an action exploration game in such a way. While others were fighting out who was the father of the Zelda-formula, Metroid created something different.

All this game needed was Danger Mouse's outline in some of the wall blocks and it might have been the perfect game of all time. Between Megaman and Metroid, science fiction games were not after thoughts or graphically inferior to mainstream fiction based games.

5. Street Fighter 2. I don't really even think I should put anything down here. I've said enough. However, I will say this. Mortal Kombat was a great title. In many ways it took market share from Capcom and moved it to Midway.

But look where we are now. Mortal Kombat hasn't aged gracefully at all. It might have had the better movie, but Street Fighter 2 has paid dividends to the genre. Street Fighter 4 thanks you mister 2. You were the best of the best.

Well I think Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time easily has a spot here; it literally perfected the action/adventure genre. FFVII could be argued as well. Maybe Street Fighter II, Metal Gear Solid (and/or 3: Snake Eater,) Pokemon Red/Blue, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Doom, Super Metroid, Super Mario 64... damn there's too many!

Here are my thoughts on your list.

Doom has an argument to be on, but I wouldn't put it at number 1 and if it did make this list it would be the 5th at the most in my opinion, but lets see what other people have to say.

Super Mario Bros 3 pretty much perfected what the first did, but while I agree that a Super Mario should be on here should it be 1 or 3 is the real question? What had the the bigger impact the perfection or the revolutionary first impact. I am going to give my vote to the original super mario bros because remember how it set the stage for super mario bros 3, as well as mega man and metroid you are recommending which I will get into.

Now for mega man/metroid I would disagree with both of these. Actually I would go as far as to say they DEFINITELY do not make the cut. 3 platformers have been recommended here and mario is for sure the better of the 3 to meet this list. While these two games meet the criteria of what I have stated it doesn't meet it to the level that would make it worth this list. You have to remember that isn't looking down on either of these games which are some of the best of all time, but I am sorry they are not top 5 material.

Street Fighter 2 has a HUGE argument. I don't like fighters and street fighter pissed me off, but who cares? I am not a fighting fan and bias aside this by far the only fighter than can make this list. Why? It is without the doubt the best fighter of all time when leaving aside personal bias or playing favorites. It is still played to this day and many still consider it the best fighter even without time considerations.

So, is this all based on gameplay and impact and popularity and such? If so, Ocarina without a doubt. Grand Theft Auto III as well. Super Mario Bros. And uh...I'm not sure, there are a few from me. None of them (Ocarina is arguable) are my favorite in the series, but they have impact, legacy, sales, and good gameplay. If that's what you mean. I'd go as far to say either the first Zelda or Ocarina are the "Best Game of all Time" by this definition.

Here are the games i think are the best and not necessarily my favorite:

Legend of Zelda(NES)-
Many people discribe this as the greatest game of all time and i agree. Mixture of action and rpg. Openworld enviornment and the freedom to choose how you did things and in what order. Great graphics at the time. The game at the time also provided a sense of adventure, looking for secrets and uncovering things hidden in the game. This game was an excellent mixture of all types of games. It included combat, exploration, puzzles, and strategy. A lack of internet required friends to share tips and tricks together. The game was challenging yet not overall difficult. Most importantly so many developers cite this game as an inspiration to them. IMO its the greatest game of all time.

Super Mario Bros (NES)-
This is basically the platformer that introduced everyone to mario. Perfect controls, level of difficulty, secrets to uncover, good graphics, and fun. Ask anyone if theyve played this game and loved it and they will say yes. This is basically the game that saved the video game crash when games were seen as just a fad and about to die. SMB was released with the NES, a system released late in the video game crash era and bought gaming back from the brink of death. An excellent platformer that launched the most recognizable video game franchise ever.

Super Mario 64-(N64)
The game that ushered in 3d at the time. The game is the blueprint to what all 3d games are today. Perfect platforming and controls made this game excellent and it still holds up today. Every 3d game today should give thanks to mario 64 for setting the mold and doing it well.

Tetris(Gameboy)-
This is perhaps the greatest puzzle game of all time. It is simple and addicting fun. One of the first games i remembered that older people enjoyed perhaps more than kids. This game sold so many gameboys as it was packed in with the system. The game is so great it is still being released to this day being over 20 years old. The game has been on multiple systems since its release and can even be found playable on todays cell phones. The greatest puzzle game of all time deserves a spot on the list.

Pac-man (Arcade)-
No one knows for sure how many quarters were dropped into pacman machines but it can be assumed that it was a LOT. Widely considered to be the greatest and most popular arcade game ever, pacman is a simple and fun game that still holds up to this day even 30 years after its release. People loved the game so much and wanted more challenge that they created a different variation-Ms. Pacman which has became a legend in its on right. Perhaps the fore-runner in the arcade craze of the early 80s, Pacman should deserve a spot for being the best arcade game ever.

1. Super Mario Bros. (NES)
It saved video Games.

2. Super Mario 64 (N64)
First time the now extremely popular 3D engine was used in a Video Game.

3. GTA III (PS2)
First Video Game you had pure "Freedom".

4. Dragon Quest (NES)
It made the world go crazy over RPGs.

5. Tetris (GB)
It made "nonGamers" play Video Games, it revolutionized the Puzzle Genre.

Couldn't it be a top 10? It's too sad not to put Games like GoldenEye ro PacMan on my list.

Great list in my opinion though I would like to see an rpg on the the list ;) I just do not know which one.

To answer the question from the poster above the game does have to be popular just for this fact, there is no game in existance that could qualify for this list and was a complete flop in sales or very unappreciated. A top 5 game of all time list has so many games to choose from that unpopular great games can't make the cut. If this was a top 50 games of all time list sure there would be several under appreciated games on here, but on a top 5 list no.

I will put one vote in to Super Mario Bros for sure. While the original Legend of Zelda was revolutionary beyond a doubt, I am going to have to say that maybe Ocarina of Time deserves the spot more. It really opened up the greatness for LoZ for many more players and nearly perfected the formula of what LoZ and the genre in particular should be. The original LoZ in my opinion also has not aged well though many of you will shoot me for saying this. Look at my avatar/sig incase you try to attack me. I know Zelda and I know the casual audience and believe me the original LoZ is not that appealing to someone who didn't grow up in the 80s or early 90s.

I will vote for LoZ OoT and SMB for two on the list. I know Super Mario 64 is amazing, but I don't know if it should be on the list. Again, I am not putting a hammer on this choice as it well could end up on the list, but how many platformers can go on this list as it should reflect gaming as a whole. Metal Gear Solid opened up a genre to the world and incoorperated an epic story into a game with guns and really defined the stealth genre. That game should get consideration.

EDIT: Let me add one note to help everyone when choosing. When you choose a game make sure to really think if that game was the best of the best at what it did. For example when you choose Super Mario 64 make sure you really think(without bias) that it was the most revolutionary 3D platformer of all time and met all the categories of being pretty much perfect(btw it did ;) ).

Oh btw i had a an rpg in mind namely Chrono Trigger of Final Fantasy 4 but got tired of writing and only wanted to put 5 lol. Oh and no offense taken on the original zelda. It is in part due to nostalgia but i can always play that game. I was gonna put Ocarina of time as many sites and gamers have cited that game as perfect and the greatest of all time. My list would have seemed biased as hell if it had 2 zeldas and 2 marios however i believe OoT, the original zelda, SM64, Mario 3, and SMB all deserve a shot in this contest. I may seem like a nintendo fanboy as i didnt include any sony or microsoft games yet i couldnt think of any top 5 of all time worthy games there. I shall think more and will see what others have to say.

Nintendo has created some of the best games ever and no bias perceived at all. Microsoft has only one game that can dream to be on this list and that is Halo, but I think Doom would deserve that spot more if we are giving it to an fps.

I am actually playing through FF4 for the first time right now on the snes and I am almost 9 hours in. Great game and super revolutionary/underrated. Has to be one of the first games to incorporate a deep story like this into an rpg.

Chrono Trigger kind of perfected what had been done in many ways.

FFIV is one of my favorite rpgs of all time, but I didn't like it when I found out that Final Fantasy IV (released as Final Fantasy II) for the snes really wasn't accurate to the original game. Many combat options were removed and the game was generally made much easier. If you want to play the game the way it was intended to be played then the PSX re-release is the most accurate version. It also doesn't suffer from lag like the other PSX ports did.

Also I grew up in the 80's and 90's and I still think Legend of Zelda for the NES is freaking awesome. I don't really have much else to add to this topic, I'll let you guys come up with the list because I'd be too biased probably.

What are you actually saying here? The this is the first time the Mario 64 3d engine was used in a game? Or the first time A 3d engine was used in a game?

Cause Playstation had 100 titles prior to the actual launch of the Nintendo 64 with at least half of them being 3d. We aren't even considering PC and Saturn.

As for the Mario 64 engine... it was the first and only time that engine was used from what I understand. Zelda 64 creators even said that they started out with the Mario 64 engine and by the time they got into stride with its development... it was radically different and was not even considered by their own team to be the Mario 64 engine.

Great input hooflung. People should argue for and against games in this thread especially against without bias. There could be games we are thinking deserve to be on the list, but others may know the deeper story behind these games or their greatness that actually would reveal other factors putting them on or taking them off the list :).

Regardless if it was the first 3d game blah blah or not, it was one of the first 3d platformers done well (lol @ bubsy 3d). The game was a perfect platformer and showed what 3d was truelly capable of if done right. The game is timeless and playable to this day and i think it still looks great. You cant deny what many developers and people say as one of the best platformers and games ever.

It was in no way shape or form the first 3D title. As for it's playability or looking good I won't argue that it has its quirks. Being on the top 5 of all time? I think there are better and I can appreciate something even if I personally don't find much fun in it.

Here is a true 3d game prior to Mario 64. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Descent_II

I am pretty damn sure if a PC game forum saw this thread, and putting Mario 64 above Descent II you'd have a riot on your hand. Neither were my cup of tea for the most part, but Descent series was freaking popular in the PC gaming crowd. I did enjoy its LAN multiplayer and modem multiplayer, and it supported my Diamond Stealth 3d 2000 PCI card... which I still have floating around somewhere.

I've pretty much grew up throughout every generation of gaming even though I missed quite a few consoles due to my parents hatred of video games and my gaming hobby, but I'll try to give my honest impressions of what I feel are the five greatest games of all time.

I'm more of less basing this list on not nescessarily best games of a certain genre, but the best games that could represent their genre to a person that has never played video games before.

1.) Super Mario Bros. 3 - No greatest game list would exist without including this game. I know a lot of people would put the original Super Mario Bros. over this one because its the original, but to me a great game is not defined by if its the first game of the series, it should be defined by what how it brought brought the best out of the genre. I think Super Mario Bros. 3 is literally the best side scrolling platformer ever made. According to the 2008 Guiness Book of World Records it is the largest individual selling game that did not come with the system. The only reason everybody has Super Mario Bros. is because for a lot of us it came with the NES. People actually went out of their way to buy this game to add it to their nes library and I remember as a kid every household that had a nes always had a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. With so many power-ups, so many secrets and so many mini-games; it was literally the greatest nes game ever made and a great game that will always stand the test of time.

2.) Chrono Trigger - I keep telling myself that an rpg deserves to be on the list of the 5 greatest games of all time. I always wonder what would be considered one of the greatest rpg's of all time. To anybody who is an rpg fan, one cannot omit final fantasy, and while final fantasy pretty much launched the rpg game genre and literally remains one of the most beloved series of all time. I don't believe Final Fantasy is the game that represents the rpg game genre the best. Final Fantasy is a game that despite its greatness can be fairly long games, and to a casual gamer that can turn them off from the rpg genre.

Chrono Trigger on the other hand, is a beautiful, simple, articulate and short rpg that any gamer would love. Even though Xenogears is my favorite rpg/game of all time, and Final Fantasy VI is my favorite final fantasy I think Chrono Trigger is seriously the one rpg that does not have flaws. It is incredibly simple to play, it has an excellent story, beautiful amazing music, addictive gameplay, multiple endings, a ton of sdie quests and to be honest it is an incredibly short rpg compared to other rpg's out there.I, myself can not see a simple flaw in this game and it is because of the fact that I believe that this game has no flaws is why I believe this game is the greatest rpg of all time, and deserves to be on the top 5 greatest games of all time.

3.) Tetris: The one game that pretty muched turned any person into a gamer whether you were a casual gamer, a hardcore gamer, or a person who hasn't played games at all. It is a game that pretty much sold a portable gaming system and it is a game that I would be safe to say that at least if anyone has played any video game in your life, tetris has been one of them regardless, if you were home, at the office, or on the road. Never have I seen a game so simple that so many people have took a shining to. This game pretty much layed the essentials of the puzzle game genre, despite being one of the simplest games to play, it is definitely one of the most addictive.

4.) Metal Gear Solid: As much as I think Metal Gear Solid 3 has one of the best stories of the entire Metal Gear series, the first Metal Gear Solid for the playstation did something so effectively that so many games used as a blueprint to make a great game and that is Story. Metal Gear Solid has one of the best stories I have ever seen and it has some of the best villians, best fights, and best voice acting I have ever seen in a game. The times that I have played this game, I felt like this game was a live action film with how everything was portrayed. This game took storytelling to the next level and did things that made the gamer think and used some of the most innovative controls I have ever seen. Many people regard this as the best game for the Playstation, but the fact that this game took a beloved nes license and brought it to next level in such an above and beyond way.

5.) The Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time: You can't really have a best game list without mentioning this gem of a title that pretty much held the highest accumulated gaming scores of all time for over ten years until being recently dethroned by Grand Theft Auto 4 . It was the first video game to ever achieve a perfect score in Famitsu. Its kind of funny, it isn't my favorite Legend of Zelda game, but I recognize the greatness that this game holds. The world in this game is just so immersive and there are tons upon tyons of things to do in this game. The environments are so wide and rich, and sometimes you just get lost in the world your in. The bosses and dungeons seem so huge. It is very easy to get lost in the beauty that this game holds. This is blueprint of what makes a great dventure game, and its because of the legacy that the The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time holds that Link will always have consistant great titles for as long as video games exist.

People actually went out of their way to buy this game to add it to their nes library and I remember as a kid every household that had a nes always had a copy of Super Mario Bros. Now that I think about it more and more maybe an rpg doesn't deserve to be on this list? I am a huge rpg fan, but I can justify leaving out Doom or something that defined a shooter genre for an rpg. If an rpg is to make this then I would say Metal Gear Solid should be booted(My soul is screaming right now for saying that).

Tetris is the King of Casual gaming and I will put a vote on that list, but I still stand firmly that the original super mario bros saved gaming and set the stage and still is a great game. I will argue that SMB deserves it over SMB3.

I have come to the conclusion that the list should include these games(my opinion I am the God of this thread or something we will decide this together)
1. Super Mario Bros.
2. Tetris
3. Doom
4. Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time
5. I don't know...

Some games that would fit the 5 spot would be an rpg(Like I said Chrono Trigger was perfecting a formula, but it isn't really that revolutionary if you think about it and maybe dragon warrior deserves it more), RTS(Starcraft? I think I may vote for this even though I don't care about starcraft. Civ has an argument to here, but the impact SC has is unbelievable, Racer GT, and MGS which brought stealth to the mainstream and story driven shooters.

Star Craft is easily the greatest game ever made in the computer game context. I'd put it at a number 6 spot on this list though. God, I love star craft. To this very day, have it installed on both my PC's right now and my mac. I still do 4 way Bnet games with my 3 buddies.

For some reason i would have a debate over smb3 and 1 because if your gonna choose between ocarina of time and the original zelda based on which one was better of which one layed the groundwork then you should do the same with mario 1 and 3. I guess everyone but me agreed that ocarina should be on the list over original zelda but we seem to be at a standstill with the marios. I will accept taking mario 64 out thats a given but i gotta give it to mario 1.

Also i dont think really every genre needs to be shown here. If we were to do that then racers, rts, and beatemups should be on here too. Personally i dont think doom should be on the top 5 list. Perhaps this should be a top 10 lol it would be easier. And i guess a lot of people so far agree tetris should be on the list.

PS i dont think we should quote in this thread since it kinda makes it huge since everyone is typing essays on thier thoughts.

There is a reason why there is a difference between Ocarina of Time when compared to the original Legend of Zelda and the original mario bros compared to super mario bros 3. I think we can all agree that OoT and SMB3 are more enjoyable than the original LoZ and SMB, but the thing is SMB has alot less flaws than the original LoZ. It has aged much better and is older than LoZ at the same time.

Let me present the argument in a different way. Ocarina of Time came out 12 years ago. It is still playable to this day and even when young people who played TP or other Zeldas first pick up OoT many still like it the best. Now lets add 12 years onto the original LoZ release date. That year would be 1998. I think the argument speaks for itself. Even in 1998 the original LoZ felt super outdated to someone who hadn't grown up with it or was old enough to play it before link to the past came out.

The original legend of zelda is a hallmark in gaming and really set the stage for so much but I really have to say Ocarina of Time nearly defined perfection in gaming. A game in which in another 10 years we can go back and play. Same with the original Super Mario Bros, but sorry 90% of kids will not be able to appreciate the original LoZ.

I just wanted to adress some issues. I just want to keep in mind, I'm not trying to antagonize anybody, I'm just pretty much putting my two cents in.

Lets start with a few things I have in mind:

I don't think Doom has a place for the top 5 games of all time. I do believe however that a first person shooter does deserve to be on the list because the FPS genre is pretty much one of the highest selling video genre's especially over the last 10 years. I don't think Doom is the FPS is the game that truly defined and popularized the first person shooting genre.

I think the one game that truly populairzed the first person genre is 007 Goldeneye for the N64. It won game of the year for 1997, along with a ton of other awards. Even though Quake, Duke Nukem and Doom existed before this game, the first person shooting genre owes a lot to Goldeneye. If you weren't a fan of first person shooters before this game came out, you were a fan afterwards.

I personally am not a fan of the first person shooting genre, not because they are bad games, they're just not my kind of game, but the goldeneye I absolutely loved to play especially at drunken house parties with 15 to 20 people, it was a blast plaing goldeneye when you were 17 and 18 years old. Deathmacth was addicting with that game, and I believe that Goldeneye raised the bar of what a good first person shooter should be.

I've play only the first two levels of Doom and never liked it, I thought it was a more diverse and bloody version of Wolfenstein. It added something new to the first person shooting genre, but I wouldn't call it revolutionary to video games or the first person shooting genre by any means. My two cents.

In regard to the Super Mario Bros. and the Legend of Zelda arguement. I think we have to weigh what is more fun to what is more reolvutionary. Any older game could be considred revolutionary because any and every current game that is being made has to owe it to something previous especially since they layed down the framework. I think what we have to consider, is what game did the most for the video game industry. Even thought Super Mario Bros. could be considered the game that saved the video game industry, and still personally feel that Super Mario Bros. 3 pushed console gaming to a point in which it would never be in danger again due to its popularity, and the fact that so many people enjoyesd whether they played video games or not.

If we have too many issues regarding what is more important to gaming:

Super Mario Bros. - Super Mario Bros. 3
The Legend of Zelda - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Then lets put it to a vote, and get as many people to decide what they feel is more important to gaming.

I'm also with KomebackKid idea, to boost to 10 games, at least we can make sure that just about every genre of gaming is covered without having that feeling that something is left out.

Doom pretty much started it all. If you put a FPS in the top 5 not including it would be herecy. You don't have to like it to appreciate it. I'd be inclined to put OoT in this if it actually accomplished what people say it did. However, it didn't. It didn't pioneer anything. It wasn't created in a vaccum. It is arguable if it is even the best Zelda game of all time. It is arguable that it even deserves the credit it got from the media.

You can't really argue that about doom. It is the foundation of all FPS titles. It is the foundation of survival horror genre. It is still played and loved to this very day. It is one of the essential games on any non-Linux operating system. It basically introduced the word 'Mod' on the PC. It was one of the first mainstream titles to ever have accessible user created content. Alien Doom anyone?

It also put the company on the map today. Not commander keen and not Wolfenstein. I'd give you that Nintendo 64 was bailed out becuause of the massive global sales of OoT. But the two aren't comparable in terms of what they did for their genres. You say Oot, I'd say Spiro could get some credit. What other FPS did to FPS what Doom did? Not 1. Not even goldeneye.

Without Doom, you wouldn't have Call of Duty at all. Why? They are all built from iD's engines. Yes... Modern Warfare 2 is based on the Quake 3 engine. iD doesn't strike with Doom... half the western made games you ever played on any console aren't made. Go an look up how many games run off iD tech. All modernizations of the original Doom.
