Hardcore Game Versus Casual Game

Personally, a hardcore game is something along the lines of Mario or Metal Gear Solid, or Sonic. A casual game is something like Trackmania DS or MODNation Racers.

I'm having some real trouble defining these terms for myself though, albeit I use them pretty frequently. Perhaps they are too subjective to even warrant a general definition. What do you guys/girls define these terms as?

Ex (imo):

Hardcore = Ratchet and Clank

Casual = Call of Duty.

Both can be argued to be casual games, and at the same time people can argue both can be hardcore. See my confusion? I want to see the users' definitions of the two, so we can make a general consensus on it.

Note: I don't mean for this to be an argumentative topic, but if it escalates to that, please keep them respectful. Thanks. :)

Also, sorry if this was done before. I don't think it was though...

To me, casual games are games you can pick up and play and have no real learning curve, while hardcore games are games that take more skill.

MW2 is a casual game in my eyes, but CoD4 is a hardcore game to me.

Definitely. Not to mention the obvious casual games such as Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, all of the "Wii" titles, and more peaceful games like that.

Then hardcore games are the action-packed, sometimes violent and frustrating, games. When I think of hardcore games I think of dungeon-crawlers, violent/intense FPS, and games that will always keep you on the edge of your seat. While in most casual games, you won't have to be constantly alert and can just sit back and relax.

A casual game doesn't have to wear a tie... that's the difference.

Ds Games!

For me I don't think of my games as casual or hardcore, but more of short games and long games. I do something like play a game such as FF4 on my ds, then move onto a couple of games like peggle and big bang mini before it's back to another long game. I think the way you play a game decided if it is casual to you or not, since any game you can pop in for a half hour for fun and then leave it alone for a while.

That made me LOL for sure.

My definition of a "casual" game is one that requires no real time commitment and can be picked up and played at any time. For me, this includes games like Tetris, Peggle, most non-simulator racing games and simple platformers. "Hardcore" games are the ones that require attention, skill and time in order to master. Alot of the 50+ hour RPGs, tactical shooters, RTS and MMORPG games are what I would consider to be non-casual friendly. But this is subjective since a seasoned gamer can go into a game like Demon Souls and own it, so this would be a casual game by their definition.

We have discussed casual vs. hardcore gamers on this forum before and people have varying opinions on what qualifies one to be in either camp, be it the level of skill or the amount of time one devotes to gaming in general. I think the games on their own are easier to classify since some games are clearly aimed at hardcore gamers and vice versa.

Dang, show me a seasoned gamer who goes into *Yahtzee pronunciation* Demon's Souls and 'owns it' is beyond a mere 'hardcore gamer' in my book :P

Well put! I see what you're saying, because if you just beat a game with the absolute minimum it could be casual for you, while if you go for all of the collectables, achievements, levels, or the high score; you could easily make it hardcore (and maybe frustrating at the same time! :P).

It is hard to compare two things that have nothing to do with each other.

Just sayin.

Games are games. I hate the hardcore/casual labels, it opens the floodgates to fanboys who don't accept that their favourite form of entertainment is now being made more mainstream by appealing to both dedicated 'gamers' and 'nongamers'
