A+ post!

I have another question, and maybe you could ask your Japanese peers.

In America you don't see vendor loyalty with the developers and publishers. Gamestop is universally hated by most game publishers but the free market pretty much dictates that customer visibility is high in these stores.

But make no mistake, if the publishers could get away with it they'd let Gamestop shut down if it was going to be status quo for the next 10 years. In fact, Gamestop is starting to play the 'if you can't beat them, join them' approach with game companies. Gamestop is upping its corporate stock by building systems easy for PSN/Live/EA Store codes. Win Win for both sides.

What I am getting at is could there be more ingrained vendor loyalty with the boutique shops in Japan with the publisher and developers? Almost a tradition of doing business a certain way and that it isn't going to end just because the western industry is doing its own thing instead of defaulting to Japan's historic leadership in the gaming industry.

So you see business as usual and the culture invoke authority to game development to ensure the shops don't close, because Japanese video game companies sell much more than video game unites and games in their home country? Not to say that there isn't competition between the stores but it isn't walmart, amazon, best buy and Gamestop running the show like in the states.

Any light to shed?

Haha, thanks.

Let's see.

I really don't see any sort of division or preference for one vendor or another. If there is any sort of loyalty it falls one the consumer, which really isn't the case. I will say this though, there is a Geo store close to where I live and that is where I do most of my preorders. There's not really a reason. I simply like them.

Here's some stores selling games in Japan:
Geo
Tsutaya
Bic Camera
Yamada Denki
Kojima Denki

I know there are a ton of others, but where I live isn't the biggest place. So, these are the ones coming to mind. I mention these because not only do they sell games but they sell a variety of other things. Geo and Tsutaya are more for movie rentals, used games (mainly back to PS1, but they do have some gameboy advanced games) and things of that nature. The Denkis are less oriented around games and more around household electronics like dryers and refrigerators. Bic Camera is a sort of hybrid of the two. So, yeah, I am really not aware of any sort of preferences, but I will ask my coworker the next time I see him, which I have no clue when because we rarely see each other as it is@_@

That is kinda what I was getting at. No real preferential treatment per se, but because the stores sell goods made by the game manufacturers other divisions there is preferential treatment to the stores as a whole and they don't lobby for market changing tactics like rentals in government.

Thus, keeping the used game market in tact at a variety of stores which helps visibility with customers to other goods such as appliances. Sony is into everything, and keeping the Sony brand safe in Japanese stores probably means more to them than doing something that would only be advantageous to only their game division.

Am I barking up the wrong tree here or do you see anything that might make that point of view relevant?

Are you trying to get to the idea that because Sony has its hands in other product outside of gaming it would rather just play it safe and not try to be creative or take a risk that may upset its consumers in Japan?

I'm sorry for some reason it's just not clicking for me today@_@ I'm having a hard time trying to connect it...

I am specifically getting at the rental market. Not creativity.

Well, speaking specifically about the rental market, it has nothing to do with gaming. I don't think you can rent games in the same sense we do. The rat race would be a better comparison. So, I think you're barking up the wrong tree on that one. Hope this helps.

I know there is no rental market :P

What I am saying is that the rat race is an out dated model and should have changed when the market started opening up to a global market. It might have even set them back some years. It is a dead end method that will be replaced by digital downloads or streaming, where as rental based societies such as the US have interim evolutions of the rental market that impacts the speed of digital download becoming the only options.

Thus, Sony and the other Publishers and manufactuers have had to keep the status quo and keep Japanese business owners happy. However, Sony has had to figure out other ways to make money. Sony has invested heavily in non-Japanese game developers and done its damnest to become a multi-national brand in the video game market. I am just trying to see how many of these variables have got Japan where it is.

I also have a follow up article to this written out to cover the topic being discussed here in this thread.
