@MGS Metal Gear Solid But there's still plenty of good music out there today, I think is what Kharnivore, and myself, meant. It just requires digging, like I said. Also, Kharnivore, Kyuss is awesome. Great stoner rock. Specifically the Welcome to Sky Valley album. |

How so? Some of the musicians kicking about today are twice as talented as page, hendrix or i dunno...randy rhodes? How are they not REAL musicians? |

I think he means all of the producers and DJ's helping them sound better now almost every one uses them and back then it was even used.

Producers were used though. a lot of the musicians produced they're own stuff but so do modern musicians. Sorry if im sounding like an ass but i just dont think its fair to say such a thing. |

It's common to hear from people that only listen to what the media puts infront of them to judge this generation of music as 'untalented' or over-produced. Turn your radios off and do some research and you will find that talent, musicianship and tasteful songwriting is still alive and well - it's just that hardly any of it has the marketing to back it up. |

Yeah, as for the producer thing, like Kharnivore said, it's always been done. Besides, I don't think sound quality and all of that determines talent. In some cases I prefer bad quality, to be honest. The best kind of Hip Hop has a grimey, low quality sound to it, for example. And MuayThaiNinja's post is exactly right. This is what I've been trying to say a few times in this thread. I mean quality. You could tell it's 70's music but the quality of it is amazing; espicially if you listen to it with headphones! I would even say that many bands can't get that quality today. |

The thing with todays music is that bands/musicians don't spend a lot of time on the music. All they care about is the lyrics. Now lyrics are inportant but without the music it's just poetry. Band's need to start putting music back into the lyrics. |

Just have to look for the bands that do concentrate on the music, Pelican, bossk and irepress are just 3 bands off the top of my head that are really about the music more than anything. Cant just write off all the bands in the world due to a small percentage being a bit stale. Past era's have had shovel loads of rubbish too. |

Kharnivore, don't get me wrong. I'm not stating my opinion as fact. In fact, I'm the one being an ass because I haven't given modern bands a chance because of the mainstream crap. What are some good bands that you know of nowadays (specifically, the ones with guitarists of whom you believe are better than Hendrix, Page, and Rhodes)? Though, in all honesty, I don't think a small percentage of music today is bad, I think the majority of what people (at least those from the US) hear today is bad. |

I have a few favourite bands: Oasis- Can't believe no one has mentioned them yet. Probably the most influential band ever next to the Beatles. You can't beat their albums released in the 90's. 'Whats the story morning glory?' or 'definetly maybe' are my personal favourites. The Killers- I love this alternative rock band as I grew up listening to their hits and have become a big fan. I will probably only sing to their songs only and some of Oasis songs. Arctic Monkeys- Their debut album was fantastic and became really popular (fastest selling debut album of all time in the UK!) and since then i've been hooked. The best lyrics I've heard and are so far very consistent. Linkin Park- I enjoy them because they offer a bit of variety in their songs. I don't like screaming non stop in songs. I can listen to these guys without being temporarily deaf for 5 minutes. I also like Queen, Biffy clyro and Feeder. |

Obviously this is all really down to personal opinion regarding quality of songs etc. I may say someones better than dave gilmour of pink floyd for example which in turn may influence someone to want to stab me haha. These guys i'll list are chosen due to technichal prowess and proof that people do still put in the hours and work real hard to be masters of thier craft...i understand that some people may not like the music but you cant deny the calibre of the musician and how much effort has gone into there compositions. Psyopus - The Pig Keepers Daughter Ion Dissonance - 101101110110001 Nile - Papyrus Containing the Spell to preserve its Possessor Against Attacks From He Who Is In The Water I know the music seems a bit one sided genre wise but thats just cause i think metal is the best depiction of musicians pushing the boundries technically. There are others that go for the feel rather than the insane stuff, actually showing there skills in arrangements and not mind blowing tech... Pelican - Spaceship broken, parts needed Irepress - Samus(no metroid connection...i think)really got into these guys recently, that riff at 1:08 is just amazing. Bossk - Define Check out Tools "10,000 days(wings for marie pt 2)" too, didnt do a link cause its longer than 10mins. "10,000 days in he fire is long enough, your goin home..." tools build ups are pretty much 2nd to none in my opinion. And here is an example of just one guy making records at home with a drum sequencer...pretty damn good in my opinion. Cloudkicker - The Discovery I could see why you would think that theres so much crap in this day and age though. With stuff like kings of leon and the killers(no offence to anyone who are fans) etc being praised as the best of the best on radio, magazines etc its hard not to lose faith in great music. If you delve deep enough though you can find some really great, hard working musicians that never even get a look in. |

My all time favorite band is Rush. The amount of musicianship in one of the members alone is simply incredible. Drummer Neil Peart's lyrics have so much thought and variety to their composition and subject matter, and can be about anything from a favorite car(Red Barchetta) to the atomic bomb(Manhattan Project) and feelings of grief (the Vapor Trails album). Bassist Geddy Lee is one of the best bassists out there. Their style of music is so different in each album (there are over 20 of them), there is something for everyone. And about their not being in the Rock hall of fame, i have a quote to sum that up: "Rush, you have yet to be inducted into the Rock'n'Roll hall of fame, is there any chance your next album will be called 'That's Bulls***!'?"-Stephen Colbert My other two favorite bands are Dream Theater and Iron Maiden. |
