Funny thing Richard brought up Half-Life as an overrated series, and how you guys are talking about FPS perfection. Because Half-Life, if you asked me anyways, IS FPS perfection. Especially the second one and it's proceeding episodes. Unless of course you count Deus Ex. That game is probably the reason I always wanna laugh like a smug bastard when people tell me their favorite FPS is Halo or Goldeneye.

I'm going to have to say Call of Duty, only because of Modern Warfare 2. If any other game had released with a campaign that short, and a multiplayer that is filled with that many glitches and bugs, it would have been shunned by the gaming community. But since it bears the Call of Duty name people consider it the messiah of the first person shooters. ^ (this was quoted by the way ) i agree with this |

But they didn't revolutionize anything. They are the big fish in a small pond but Black, Golden Eye, Time Splitters, Unreal Tournament for Dreamcast, Aliens v. Predator, Doom, Quake 2, Star Trek: Elite Forces on PS2 and a host of others 'perfected' FPS on the consoles. Halo and Call of Duty 4+ just happen to be the ones you can still play with people online and they had revamped online connectivity instead of a revamped local social play. How much of that is due to a) the Xbox Live! service and b) the actual experience in PC multiplayer components that drove the FPS market. Perfected is a strong word. Their graphics are incremental. The multiplayer is as well. The best part of 4 player local CoD4 is the fact it mirrors GoldenEye and Timesplitters multiplayer. They don't play any different and in fact are buggy as fuck online. Where again is the 'perfection' you champion? edit: PS Quake 3 Arena played pretty well over the internet on the Dreamcast as well as local play. About a few years ago I would have said Halo. Granted, Halo is still a horribly overrated series with as many fan boys as there is to the series. I find the CoD series much more over rated. They douse the game with nothing but online experience. It is the only reason why people buy the game. Its so bad, that MW2 now has been reduced to a 6 hour or less single player campaign. As for other overrated titles? I'm not really sure. But who am I to judge for something being overrated? Everyone is entitled to an opinion. But an opinion only matters when it is your own, and not influenced by others. (AKA. Fanboys following others to the overrated games.) |

On the top of my head: Donkey Kong Country Final Fantasy Mortal Kombat Resident Evil Warcraft Halo GTA Left 4 Dead Call of Duty Gears of War Red Dead Revolver/Redemption
Funny that I find the main platforming Kirby games much more fun to play than repetitive collect-a-thons like the DKC series. Especially Kirby Super Star which is considered by many fans as the crown jewel of the series. Edited by Nintega, Jul 20 2010, 08:36 PM.

I think the grand theft auto series is over rated. Ex. When I got GTA 4, it was sooo hyped, when I actually played it I couldn't play more that 35 minutes without getting a stomach ace. |

I get tired of hearing about Team Fortress 2 all the time. Arena fighting games don't really appeal to me. When I get my new PC I plan on getting the Valve Complete Collection on Steam though, so I might end up actually getting it eventually. Just tired of hearing about it. Like it's the greatest thing ever. |

Its an okay game. I had it since the orange box release. The game was WAAAAY better before they put updates in. They added so much crap to the game its not really fun any more. I gave up on it real early anyway. It was fun for a bit, but got boring. |

I find it hard to call a game overrated. Because some games i don't enjoy because i don't like the controls (or in the case of N64 games, the controller itself), but I can see why people where blown away with it. Some games I don't really enjoy as much as they are critically loved are: Mario 64 (I can see why everyone loves it... it looked AMAZING in 96, but man I hate the camera.. not my favourite mario game at all) Metal Gear Solid F.E.A.R (actually actively dislike this one) Resident Evil (Probably just aged badly.. but those controls.. oh man) I love the Halo series though, they are unfortunately victim to their own hype. I find it plain silly to hear people say that it is just another FPS series and did nothing for the genre, please. I don't think Mario 64 is the best 3D plat former of all time but i would never deny what it did for 3D games in general. Kinda looks like there are some 10-15 year old on here with the responses. Regarding the comments about half-life earlier in this topic...over-rated? Really? Its hard to imagine now, a good 13yrs on, but half-life is so good im still impressed by it now. The level designs, the vast amount of enemies and thier quite clever AI made this a standout title and actually shaped they way for FPS to come. Id have to say the smash bros games. Just never been a fan, might be down to everyone telling me i've got to got into it...just for them to kick holy hell out of me, then cheekily telling me i need to practice. COD is another, i liked 1 and 2 but it has just gotten ridiculous now. 2nd hand copies are still almost full price, dl content id waaaay overpriced and they game is sorta ruined by teams of players that do nothing except play cod. Yes yes, very nice, you got me, rant and rave about it, your on god knows what prestige now and im on level 10...you harcore gamer you. Oops didnt mean to put a rant in here...:p |

Y'all need to check yoself before yo wreck yaself. YA HEAR!? Over-rated simply means that people think *too* highly of it. Doesn't mean it's rubbish, it's not the 2nd coming of Christ or owt. See: GTA Halo CoD Resistance / Killzone Gears It physically hurts me to state that Gears is overrated, as I love it dearly. But people go on about it being the ebst thing ever, when quite clearly it's not. God Hand.. Now that's a different tale. |

Sorry, can't agree less about the Call of Duty series. The campaigns in every game I've played have been amazing and I still remember playing the first one because of the approach it took to story telling for a war game. A game doesn't have to redefine a genre to be great for me. I'd say Medal of Honor way before Call of Duty but that's my opinion. For me its Call Of Duty and Madden. I can't find one kid who plays anything other than these two. They hate every game that dosen't have good graphics and tons of gore and call you gay if you like anything else. God Call Of Duty especially, Middle School was hell for me because I didn't like modern warfare two and if you say it in public people look at you like your not human and/or that you have insulted their mother. Its ruined whole years of my life and I doubt many of you can say that for most games. |
