Johnny Justice recently posted a topic that had me thinking: is it possible to play a movie that's stored on your hard drive onto your TV via HDMI cable? I backup quite a few movies onto my hard drive and it would make things 10x easier if I didn't have to burn them to a disc. Thanks for any advice

Yes you can do this, it is just like using a seperate monitor instead of the one on your laptop, I'm not 100% sure you can do it though HDMI, but I know it's possible. |

Aye, several new laptops have a HDMI-out for this very exact reason. Having a brief look, Buying an after market USB to HDMI adaptor may be a bit more $$$ than most people are willing to pay though. |

Yep :). Just hook it up to your TV and use it as a monitor. It is just like doing it with a desktop. Though some laptops only have hdmi in not out which is weird. |

You may need to press one of the 'F' buttons at the top of your keyboard. It'll have a little monitor symbol on it. I wanna say F6, but I think it changes model to model. But naw, should be fine. |

They started making USB external video cards for laptops, so if your laptop doesn't have HDMI, you may look into that. Laptops for a while now have had S-Video so that might be a lower quality option if you have that. Most of the newer TV's have VGA also, which your laptop should have also, which would be high quality and work. Like Andsy said, there may be a series of keys, or something in the video options you may have to change to set it up as a second monitor, or a clone of the first. If it is a clone setup though, you will probably have to choose one as the primary and one as the secondary, and video will only play on the primary(in a lot of cases), so set that one as the one you want to watch it on. |
