I don't see a reason why you need to upgrade if you still have the Original model. But according to MS, the new 360 is RRoD proof, so yeah, I think it will last longer.

I've heard that one before...

Anyway, if you're willing to risk the system breaking every few months, get it, I think it looks better and more promising that the original. And if you don't already have a big HD or internet accessories, you'll save some money.

I am not satisfied that the market is ready yet. Nor do I think the market has tech ready for microsoft.

You will almost certainly see the next Xbox and PS3 use nearly identical CPU's. The 3 cores in the 360 is identical in all but a few minute differences to the PS3's Cell Master Core. They are both already pushing the limits in terms of raw speed, or MHZ. You will most certainly see them go more wide and start slopping on cores. Going to a 32 nanometer or even 28 nanometer doesn't guarentee extra speed, what it does is shrink the optical die size... meaning you can pack more cores and cache on one chip. I wouldn't bargain to see anything more than 4-5ghz PowerPC cores x 6 or x 8 on the next gen systems.

However, this is futile in many ways if brought to market so early. The only programmers getting it [how to use such tech] are PS3 developers. They are the only ones breaking things down into parallel tasks and being ran on separate chips. The 360 is essentially being ran like a PC game would. 2 cores do most of the work, usually sharing tasks, and the 3rd does a lot of the mundane system work. It should be doing Kinect once its out.

So the real need in these platforms is Ram and graphics power. Well ram is simple enough and where it needs to be. But the graphics in the current and most certainly the next gen systems will be based off of today/tomorrow's DX11 parts from Nvidia or AMD.

But there are certain legal and political things involved here. TSMC is spinning the current 40 nanometer node chips. They are hot, they leak voltage and its ran by a third party who cannot guarantee anything. AMD is moving to a 30nm node at its own partner and sister company GLOBALFOUNDRIES, yes it is all caps. TSMC will be left holding the bag. Nvidia will either have to dance with the devil and move over to their competitors factory or they will have to invest their hopes in TSMC to improve its 30nm.

What you are probably going to see is a XBox/PS4 hardware that is damn near identical in many ways... and the only thing that will change are a few ways of doing things... like how memory is shared and the User Experience.

So I see them waiting to announce something in 2012 but you won't see the machines until 2013. GLOBALFOUNDRIES's dresden and new york factories are being renovated on the good dollars of Abu Dhabi, who as a country own GF, to push for these new product roll outs. Dresden still operates the 45nm process and newyork is being constructed. Middle Eastern investors are really raising the bar for Japanese and Taiwanese companies.

Well if you want a larger hard drive, a smaller console, built-in wifi, and don't want your 360 to sound like an airplane engine then you should buy it. Although it's basically the same system you currently have so if you don't have a PS3 yet I'd recommend that over getting the same console.

I'm getting the new 360 next week when Gamestop gets their next shipment in. Looks really great to me personally, and it's shiny piano black like my PS3 :) I'm very anal about my electronics matching...lol. My White 360 just stands out compared to everything else in my entertainment center.

Those are great trade up offers. I'm not a big 360 person but I may be willing to trade up in this circumstance as I have plenty of 360 wireless controllers laying around lol

This just made me think that the next xbox better be fully backwards compatible because all our 360s will end up dead in the years to come.

This is the same question that undoubtedly dogged people when the PS3 Slim was released. The cardinal rule of upgrading is that the difference between the new model and the old model should be big enough to warrant the purchase. If you have a functional console with a wireless adapter and a decent-sized hard drive, then I don't think you should be in any rush to go out and buy the new model. However, if you have one of the old models with a smaller drive and less frills, then the 360 Slim is worth taking a look at.

If your only motivation is to buy a model that is RROD-proof, then I would hold off. The systems have not even hit store shelves yet and their reliability has not been market-tested. Give it a few months and then research the failure rates and see how the new model stacks up against the current Elite models. You'll be able to make a more informed decision at that time.

Yeah, RROD is a thing of the past as MS have removed the small red lights around the ring. If there is a hardware malfunction on the new units users will see the small light in the center of the power button turn red.

Wave goodbye to RROD and say a big hello to RDOD! (Red Dot Of Death)

Well, I bought an elite about, 3..4 months ago.

So, I probaby wont upgrade for awhile, if at all, really.

Plus, I don't really like the design of it too much.
It's ugly. T~T

Gamestop is having a trade-up offer for $25 per 360 Wireless remote. I bought a few spares back in the day and some were given to me. I actually counted how many I have and I had a total of 15 (not sure how that happened) Xbox 360 wireless remotes, more than enough to cover a new 360 purchase. Should I upgrade to the new 360 elite and would Gamestop allow 15 controllers to be traded in at once for the trade up offer?

Yes this will happen, users of the new system may see this occur, with the smaller processor being used it is said to produce much less heat that would be a fatal cause to many systems. However nothing is error proof, you may still get the "RROD" or the Dot, whatever it may be, but this is a warning now, this occurs when your systems internal temperature is beyond the safety level of heat and the new 360's are said to shut down to prevent this. Doesn't mean your system is dead, it will turn back on once it has cooled down, so in that respect they have improved upon the failure rate.

I'm sure it's still possible to red ring or whatever and your system just dies down, but apparently with the new systems they have finally figured it out.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/3774/welcome-to-valhalla-inside-the-new-250gb-xbox-360-slim

Every rumor surrounding the 360 slim several months ago, including the motherboard revamp, has been confirmed.

Microsoft moved all 3 Chips from the old 360 design into a single unit. Whether they are all on die, or if it is a Multi-Chip Package I don't know. But it is blinging at 45 nanometers for all 3 so that is pretty damned amazing considering the GPU is an R600 based unit with a few tricks up its sleeve.

If you have an old Xbox 360, non Jasper and only G wireless/no wireless then why not. Real SATA hard drive packaging instead of that damned proprietary unit on the classic. That way they can scale to 500 to 750 Gigs easily with a SKU refresh.

More I see the insides of this product the more I like it. It is about 60 dollars too low on trade-in credit for me though.

It actually is RRoD proof. The power indication ring only displays green.
Some new error screen or light combination will replace it no doubt.

In answer to the actual question I really see no point in upgrading if you already have an original model, unless it's on it's last leg and out of warranty. It has a few nice new things, but worth shelling out another $300? Personally I don't think so.
However if you don't own one yet, there has been no better time to get into the 360.

I just bought the new slim on amazon and got it for $299.99 straight, no tax or shipping costs. should arrive by July 7th. I was going to go out and buy one but I can't seem to find them anywhere. my current 360 is going bit by bit I can tell so i'm going to sell it, and it is only 20 GB so I guess nows a good time to upgrade.

Just thought i'd let you know about it if you were having a hard time finding the slim

Finding one isn't an issue, it's about whether or not Gamestop will accept 15 controllers as a trade :/

How many Gamestop's are in your area? If you don't mind a little driving I'd say just split those 15 controllers up into more bites sized chunks for different stores. Like go to 3 Gamestops and trade 5 in each one or something.

I asked a friend who works at EB and he says you will likely come across some problems for trading in many of the same item towards a console. They have a certain quota for how many of one used item they can take back due to the higher up management.

It's a bit different with games, but since you see many of the same sport title being returned, after a certain point their offer rate towards said game is greatly decreased in order to prevent people from trading in another copy, this is when you start seeing them give you 25 cents for a game.

He said you MAY get a trade in cut back for the controllers because of the amount you have, and they would most likely be suspicious of their working condition and not be so keen on taking back so many off of you, he said they may limit you to just giving back 4 or 5.

So as previously suggested, you may want to break apart the gamestops that you drop off your controllers to.

Hmm that does sound like a good idea. I appreciate the heads up. I'll still have to ask if the 360 has to be purchased at that moment of trade, as I know the $25 a controller is only good if it is torwards the purchase of a new 360. Thanks guys :)

Just to make sure, and make it easy on yourself, my friend suggested (which I forgot to add) it doesn't hurt to give your local gamestop a call and ask tell them that you have 15 controllers that you would like to trade in, and if this is allowed, if they say "no" no harm in asking "Ok, how many can I trade in?" Good luck!

That way you don't go all around town and than end up with bad luck!

Does the new 360 ship with a transfer cable for the HDD?

I bought a 512 MB Microsoft memory unit the last time I transfered stuff to a newer XBOX 360 HDD, it doesn't look like the newer model has those ports anymore, or are they hiding on the back somewhere?
