Both professionally and personally, I recommend Dell. :)

I don't have a clue when it comes to PC laptops, I always fancied picking myself up a little 10 inch net-book, is there anything i should be looking out for?

Dell and Toshiba laptops are generally reliable, but I would avoid the discount brands like Acer because they are not as well made and are more likely to die on you prematurely. I currently have a good Toshiba laptop and a little netbook that I don't use as much. The netbook is good for what it does, but it is too small for a CD-ROM drive and it overheats in a short period of time. Most big box stores like Best Buy have a good selection of laptops, so make a trip there and check out what they have.

I agree with Browland, Toshiba is a great brand for laptops.
I would also say avoid HP laptops like a plague. While I was working in the tech support area at a Future Shop (Big electronics retailer in Canada) I saw multiple HP laptops come back with hardware faults every single day.
Honestly, I saw at very least 3 come back every day.

I would suggest an HP or Dell laptop. Those are always good choices when it come to laptops. I personally use an HP laptop, but I used to have a Dell.

Toshiba or Dell are above average brands for laptops. The minimum specs I would recommend for inside the laptop are:

1.8 GHz Dual Core Processor
2 GBs RAM

Hard drive size doesn't really matter unless she's looking to store a lot of things on her computer.

I won't touch HP personally, as they *HAD* a tendency to buy crappy faulty Maxtor hard drives.

Every week we'd get 2 or 3 failures at work, resulting in data loss and generally upset colleagues :(

Don't know if this is still the case, hence the emphasis on had.

I'm personally running on an HP, never really had a problem with it so far. Have had it about 11 months now. I also have a Toshiba and it runs perfect. My family has been running on Toshiba for years so I'm used to them :P

I think anything with a lowercase 'i' in front of the name is considered 'pretty' by modern-sex appeal standards... but then again, I wear pink jewel-studded fanny packs so what do I know?

I don't wear pink jewel-studded fanny packs but I can agree :P

I would personally stay away from Macs as they are horribly overpriced. If she's simply going to college she doesn't need anything super powerful to type an essay or go online. A simple window's based laptop would work perfectly fine with decent specs inside.

The problem with such a specific suggestion is that it's no longer on the market. If it was released at least a year ago it won't be sold at any large electronics retailer anymore.
