I have an old PS3 hard drive (or lap-top HD) that I don't use and am selling to a friend because they want it for their lap-top, but I never formatted the HD when I took it out of my PS3, and I don't know if it will be compatible without being formatted. Will the hard-drive format itself upon installation into a laptop?

The actual formatting wont be a problem (FAT32 is good but I would recommend NTFS).
However it won't have any operating system on it that can run on a computer so unless they plan on using it as just a storage drive they will need to install an operating system on it. That will usually format it for them, depending on how you do it.

What will happen....

They'll install the HDD, they'll put their Windows DVD into their DVD Drive.

It'll boot into Windows Setup.

Windows setup will say, sup man. To continue we'll need to format yo HDD. That cool?

You friend will say: no prob homes.

Windows will format the HDD and lay some OS up on that HDD.

Sorted.

For future reference, when dealing with selling HDD's, run KillDisk a few times over it. Nopt so important for a PS3. But definitely if you're selling a PC / Laptop used HDD.
VSigma100: If I've learned anything on here it's that Andsy is a crazy bastard. LOL.
