Hey all, I'm attempting to make sushi now, and so far all i can make is california rolls, in which i use sushi rice(with salt, sugar, and rice vinegar), imitation crab leg, avacado, cucumber and the nori. Does anyone have any other recipes that don't use raw seafood? There's no fish mongers around here, so that's not a safe option for me

I saw something on the Food Network where a guy used pulled pork with sushi rice and other stuff I forgot, but it looked really good. A weird kind of american bastardization of sushi I guess lol. |

I don't really have too much to add, but I've only recently started to enjoy sushi. Now, I don't like fish, it's kinda hard to explain but I often find the 'fishy' taste to be too strong, and it overwhelmes me and makes me sick. However I went to Yo! Sushi with the girlfriend a month or two back, and seeing the sushi prepared infront of me, and tasting how fresh it was, really did wonders. I actually enjoyed eating salmon, which I previously held as being way too fishy for my liking. There's a M&S foodstore here, that does little packs of Sushi, and usually they taste mank, but this one is absolutely delicious. For £1.15, you get a cooked Tuna roll, and 4-5 vegetable rolls. I really like them :| So yeah, pointless post. But there ya go

If you're a sushi novice i'd recommend tuna as it doesn't have a fishy taste, it's more like ham than anything else. Also, "sushi" is the style of cooked rice commonly topped with other ingredients, rather than fish. You can enjoy sushi, without liking raw fish. There are risks that you should be aware of when eating anything raw. If you're making your own sushi from fresh fish you NEED to freeze it for over 24 hours to kill any possible bugs/parasites. I don't know about the USA but this is actually a regulation in the EU. |

I have been eating sushi for a long time and it is one of my favorite foods, and believe it or not I have never gotten sick once. But I disagree strongly with freezing the fish, as it ruins the taste and texture of the fish and gives it a chalky or slimy texture. Sushi-grade fish is perfectly safe to eat raw provided that it is kept at the right temperature, which sushi restaurants are required to do. They proposed a law in Toronto stating that all sushi restaurants must freeze their fish, but the uproar was enormous and the law was dropped before it was passed. We just love our sushi! |

I love seafood, and I love sushi with fish in it, it's just the fact that in Indiana it's hard to get fresh seafood, let alone sushi grade. That was why I was looking for other recipes that didn't require it. |

To answer your original question, I have tried quite a few sushi rolls that don't contain raw fish. Some of these may sound odd, but I quite liked them (except for the ones containing avocado since I'm allergic to them): - Cucumber, green onion and smoked salmon - Cucumber, avocado, tobiko and cream cheese - Chicken teriyaki - Tempura Shrimp with cucumber and mayonnaise - Veggie spring rool - Teriyaki beef with mushroom - Tomago (egg) |
