Now, there are threads that state the most overrated and underrated games, but I'd like this one to keep strictly this generation. Also, don't just state names, please give a reason why. Overrated Red Dead Redemption/GTA 4- I'm putting these two together because they're virtually the same game. Rockstar really blew it for me this gen, They forgot what "fun" was, and actually found a way to make GTA boring. San Andreas and Vice City had a certain fun factor to it that wasn't there in GTA 4, The story dragged on and it took almost 5 hours for things to get good, plus, the whole Realism turn they took really wasn't a smart Idea. As for RDR, They should have renamed it "Grand Theft Horse" because that's what it is, its a bland wasteland with nothing to do except hunt the occasional animal and do an occasional mission. Way, Way Overrated, shouldn't have gotten the Praise it did. Mass Effect/Dragon Age-I Take back a lot what I said about these two, I recently got the PC version of Dragon Age, and Realized how much of a dumbass I was, Why did I ever buy a Bioware game for a console?! The PC version of DA:O is much much better, so Im going to try Mass Effect's PC version Next. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2- Do I really need to explain this one? Now the fun part Underrated Haze- You've heard me praise this games many times, but it did not deserve the hate it got. I went into this game thinking it wasn't going to be that fun, but I was greeted with hilarious cut scenes, great gameplay, and a really good story once you looked at it's core, and it's multiplayer is extremely solid, and I still get on every once in a while for an ol' match, if you can, pick this up, it's less than 10 dollars now. Alone in the Dark- Why did this game get so much hate? I found it to be a different and fun Survival Horror(Me being a Survival horror junkie) Sure the part near the end where you have to burn all the trees got repetitive, but I got past it to get greeted with an Amazing end cutscene. It was a cinematic experience and I highly recommend you pick it up, it's around 8-10 dollars now. The Darkness- The game that got me into games this gen, it has one hell of a story, some great darkness powers to play with, and an ending that may bring a tear to your eye, it's an extremely overlooked FPS and it's around five dollars, Pick it up. Alpha Protocol- Got wayyy too much hate. It's an actually RPG that meant it when it said every action has a consequence. For example, I kept some bad guy alive, and near the end of the game, he had his whole army attacking me, wanting revenge., shoulda just let him die. People seem to complain about the combat, because even if you line up a shot, that looks dead on, it may still miss, well, What I say to that is, this game makes you actually WORK on your gun skills and doesn't treat you like a baby like GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption by giving you auto aim, this game is only for people that enjoy a Good RPG and can forgive a few minor problems. Bionic Commando- A game Developed by Grin, and sold poorly, Sure the shooting isn't perfect, but the sheer fact that you're Bionic Commando and can swing around the city is amazing, it would have worked better if it was an open world game, but hey, it was still good, also, it's quite hard, so watch out. It's about 8 bucks now Honorable mention- Singularity Sure it just came out, but not many people have played it, It's different, had a cool story to it, and great gameplay. If you see it, grab it. There are many more I'd like to mention, but couldn't fit them all. Edited by Greyslash2752, Aug 11 2010, 11:38 PM.

Agreed 100% about Red Dead Redemption, GTAIV, and Modern Warfare 2. Rockstar does not know how to make games that appeal to me anymore since their biggest games this generation have been so damn boring, and not fun at all for me to play. I had such a better time playing Bully Scholarship Edition than I did playing Red Dead, and GTAIV. COD multiplayer will always be crap compared to Battlefield in my eyes. Overrated: Heavy Rain - The voice acting made me quit playing this game. Aside from Detective Shelby I thought everyone else sounded like B-level, English is my 2nd language crap which just made it hard for me to pay attention to the story. Some of the dialogue was just stupid at times too. Halo ODST - Definitely the black sheep of the franchise. I hated every second of the campaign because it was boring, and there wasn't a single memorable thing in it. Firefight was good, but they didn't offer enough content to warrant a $60 dollar purchase. Underrated: Definitely agree with Singularity. Very solid FPS, and I thought it had a surprisingly good story too. I loved the ending especially. The Darkness was really great too! Too Human - Primarily because I get addicted to just about any Action RPG with loot. I actually liked the graphics, it was fun to play in co-op, and the loot aspect is like crack. Definitely has loads of problems with the combat, and menu system, but I enjoyed my time with it. Metro 2033 - This is one of the most immersive games I've ever played on any system. The setting and ambiance are so perfect, and it sucked me into its world from beginning to end. The shooting is tad bit clunky, but it's definitely a game that is worth experiencing. Ninja Blade - Just for the insane boss battles. The regular gameplay is very boring, but this game has some of the best boss battles ever. Each one is so damn exciting, and your character either does some crazy moves that defies all logic, or it feels like the world is about to end. lol. Really great popcorn game. Others since this is getting too long: Deadly Premonition Siren Blood Curse - One of the best horror titles this gen by far. Perfect Dark Zero Shadowrun - Very well balanced MP game, but didn't offer enough content unfortunately. Riddick MAG Viking Battle for Asgard - Awesome game! Probably my favorite hack n slash this gen. Test Drive Unlimited Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard - Completely broken, but funny. Edited by NinjaPenguin8969, Jul 27 2010, 06:54 AM.

Overrated Oblivion - Many people love this RPG, but I couldn't get into it no matter how hard I tried. I found the characters to be uninteresting, the story meandering and the endless trekking and backtracking to be incredibly boring. Fallout 3 - Same as Oblivion. An open-world RPG that is a little too open, so I felt unfocused and unengaged when playing it. Red Dead Redemption - Like GTA IV, I tried hard to get into this game but I just couldn't. Maybe I will eventually grow to love it as others have, but I find that I need to force myself to play it and I quickly want to put it down. Half-Life 2 - Another shooter I couldn't really get into. Mass Effect - I am not into futuristic RPGs and I quickly lost interest in this title. All the Call of Duty games - I thoroughly enjoyed these titles, but I don't consider them to be the godsend of all shooters as many people claim. The online experience is nothing short of frustrating. Underrated Silent Hill: Homecoming - Not the best in the series, but still a spooky and challenging survival horror adventure. Ninja Blade - Uninspired hack-n-slash game that is more stylish and fun that most people give it credit for. Killzone - I actually didn't mind the first one. The sequel is better in every way, but I always felt that the original was better than most people gave it credit for. Wolfenstein (2009) - The next-gen remake of the classic shooter is actually lots of fun. Super-linnear and rather simple by shooter standards, but it offers a better and more fleshed-out single player experience than any of the new Call of Duty games. Saw - I love the movies and I felt that the video game nailed the atmoshpere and gruesome fun of the movies. This is also a good game if you're an achievement hunter. |

I would say just Call of Duty MW2, and Black Ops for overrated. Although B.O. is not out yet, I can already tell it's going to sell millions in just a month or two. Also while I don't like FPS, Call of Duty 4 was actually pretty fun for me, and World at War was even a little better. But MW2 suffers from many things that make it very overrated. I also don't have anything for underrated really. Edited by MisterStretcy, Aug 14 2010, 10:07 PM.

Bioshock - As good as it is and as much as I love it, it just feels kinda shallow for some reason. Haven't played 2 yet, I'll get back to you on that. Mass Effect feels like a totally terrible and broken game once you get into the second one. Same with the two Uncharted games. |

I absolutely love Half-Life 2. Probably the best FPS I've ever played. But I'd also say it was last generation. As it was released on PC in late '04, early '05. And it was also on the Xbox. Edited by Mshkote, Aug 12 2010, 12:47 AM.

Overrated Halo - Great game really is but is it honesty that great of a fps. It has somethings going got it but too me it doesn't feel well built. So many more fps games deserve praise as much as Underrated CONDEMNED 2- OMG no one mention this game condemned 2 is a great game and barely no one played it really go get yourself a copy of this game right now. You can beat people with prosthetic legs.Dark void- Did any reviewer even beat this game *sighs* gamespot said that this game didnt have enough jet pack scenes. Considering 2/3 of the game involved the jetpack and you could use the jet pack at any time i really think this game was bashed for no reason. The jet pack gameplay in this is extremly well done besides the lock on feature. I will say this with a 100% certainty the scale of the jet pack battles rival god of war 3. pick this game up if you see it

Overrated- Halo 3 ODST -Expansion Pack Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2- By no means it was a good game but definetly doesnt deserve all the praise it got In the Middle- Final Fantasy XIII- This a noob friendly game for people new to the jrpg genre but the combat system is horrific. But everything else is great. The lineraty does not bother me. Underrated- Enemy Territory: Quake Wars It is solid fps that nobody plays anymore Tekken 6- I thought this was a great fighting game. Even though the story mode does play like a brawler i thought it deserved some praise. |

Overrated: Call of Duty Series - I don't dislike the COD games but they are obviously catered towards the online gaming experience with short campaign modes that don't justify the $60 price tags. They look great with solid gameplay controls but they follow the Madden theme to me of just making minor changes from year to year while basically being the same game over and over with just new maps and locations. Good games but in no way deserve the fanboy worship they receive. Halo Series - The Halo games actually do a good job of providing enough content to satisfy online and offline players alike as the campaigns are fairly long and enjoyable for offline players and plenty of online modes for the multiplayers to enjoy. But as the Halo games are good they are receive too much hype as well. They are a very good FPS series but there are plenty of other FPS series that are just as good if not better and they do not receive near the praise. Again another series with fanboy worship where the series is 'good' but not the best thing since sliced bread....hence it is being 'overrated' in my opinion. Underrated: Blue Dragon - This is an absolutely fantastic JRPG on the 360 with lots of surprising twists. It has a great Turn-Based battle system that borrows elements from series like 'Chrono' 'FF' and 'Grandia'. Tons of awesome Boss and Mini-Boss battles that require you to really use some strategy to defeat. The enemies/monsters in the game are also diverse as you don't just fight the same things over and over throughout the game..ie...leveled up versions of monsters you have fought previously. Also another cool element is the tension attacks that remind me of another RPG 'Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits. When this 'tension' meter builds up you can release devastating attacks on the enemy. All in all a super top notch JRPG that is vastly underrated. Kameo: Elements of Power - This is an outstanding fantasy action adventure game that time and gamers have forgotten for the 360. You control Kameo who can shapeshift/morph into about 10 different 'Elemental Warriors'. These warrior forms all have there own distinct abilities that are needed to solve the environmental puzzle aspects of the game. The plot is engaging, the graphics and sound are stunning, and the gameplay is very fluid and combines a great mix of RPG, Puzzle, and Platformer elements. This is a superb early 360 game that can be found for about $6 now that has somehow been forgotten and is definitely underrated. Edited by stratamaster78, Aug 14 2010, 11:44 PM.

I mainly only used the stun gun if I got swarmed by a bunch of enemies at once in the first game. Didn't really rely on it too much. Yes definitely pick up the first Condemned game! I played it when it first came out, and it's one of the few games to scare the hell out of me. Might not be as scary nowadays since the graphics are probably dated at this point, but damn that game was immersive. I don't know for some reason I couldn't get into the 2nd one. Ethan just seemed like some dumb cliche anti-hero clone who's completely unlikable, meanwhile in the first game he's a believable detective. I also liked the places you went to more in the first game since they just seemed more immersive, scary, and realistic. The department store with the mannequins, the abandoned house, and the last level were just scary as hell to be in even without the enemies xD |

Over-Rated Fallout 3 (PS3, 360, PC) Maybe it's just the wrong type of game for me, but I really didn't like it. As browland1 said, it's a little too open so I felt overwhelmed and could never keep a grip on the main things I'm doing. I mean, the side-quests were pretty much neccessary, because you'll never be high enough level/equipped adquatly to go straight through the main story. And, while it's very impressive that each character in the game can basically act extremely realistic to your every action, it just makes it a stessfull experience. I knew I was done with this game when I bought something from someone in the fields, I pointed my gun at her dog, simply because I was looking at it, and then she threatened me. Then, Raiders across the river shot her dog, and she got mad at me. I tried to go over and talk to her to calm her down but then she started shooting. When I pulled out my gun to defend myself, she ran away screaming "Assault!". GAH! WHAT JUST HAPPENED!?!? No More Heroes (Wii) I love No More Heroes 2, but I really didn't like the first one. Graphics were really ugly, just had a terrible color pallete and looked very blurry (fixed in the second). The side-missions you had to do for money were exponentially boring and tedius (fixed in second), and the open world really was just awful, with people that don't even acknowledge your existance, and with missions spread out that you can't retry if you fail (taken out in second). Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (PSP) Now, with Fallout 3 I can understand that it just not be my type of game. But this game, I have absolutly no problem saying that I hate it with a passion. Story's absolute garbage, the protangonist say that he will not kill people, multiple times throughout the story, but in between he kills at least 8 people at a time, and every other character is down-right annoying. The missions are very frustrating, because the TERRIBLE controls make every little thing a huge problem. And on top of that, if the controls do fail on you, you restart the entire mission. The graphics from a technical point are great, the sense of scale really is impressive, but it can just look really ugly at times. And causing mayhem in the city wasn't all that fun, because, maybe I missed something, but it never really explained how to escape from the cops, there was no ring on the map to get out of, or a certain number of cops you have to take down. I... don't like this game, and think it's an insult to the system to call it a "Greatist Hit." Under-Rated Patapon 2 (PSP) Seriously, this game is awesome, and blows the original out of the water! There is just so much depth in leveling up, evolving, and getting new equipment for each and every one of your Patapons. Each one you create (with, what 10 different types), can be evolved to other forms, and each form can be leveled up. Each mission and boss can be replayed to get the materials needed for evolution and leveling up, and when you beat the mission/boss, it levels up and is therefore harder the next time you play it. This is like a 40 hour game to beat it, and you can easliy double that by just kicking back and grinding out your Patapons, perhaps hanging out in the local multiplayer as well. The Dark Spire (DS) I understand this one's appeal isn't very wide, but it really is an excellent game. The art style is awesome, like an old-school comic, and the little-to-no animation makes it looks so unique. The music is fantastic, very gothic and dark sounding, and the included soundtrack basically get's a listen out of me every other day. Almost all of the time you spencd playing is spent grinding, and grinding is very rewarding. When you level up, you feel stronger, you can feel all of the work that you put into it. And making your way further and further into the tower (with only a map that doesn't even tell you where you are) is difficult and addictive, and filled with puzzles and characters with witty dialogue. BUY IT! Red Steel 2 (Wii) Everybody that complains about every gesture-based Wii game being a "mindless waggle-fest" needs to play this game. The Wii Motion Plus swordplay is very accurate, feels very good, and requires actual fore-arm swings. In addition to that, there's exellent gunplay handled perfectly via IR. Together, they create very engaging and fun combat in a very stylized cel-shaded Western world. Bit.Trip Runner (WiiWare) Essentially, as many call it, an "on-rails platformer." Running to the right of the screen is handled for you, you simply do the jumps and slides and all of that. Everything you do adds to the awesome old school music (which has awesome old-school style graphics to match), to create a truly challenging and trippy experience. Seriously, when you're doing very well, and you have a rythmn going, the game sucks you in and you feel fully submerged in the gameplay. |
