H.E.R.O. by Activision should be one of your 1st purchases for the Atari 2600. What a fantastic game!

Other gems that are still fun to play even today are:

Demon Attack - Space Invaders clone, but much better.
Montezuma's Revenge - difficult but fun platformer
Pitfall II: The Lost Caverns - One of the most advanced platformers on the 2600
River Raid - Top down shooter. A classic!
Secret Quest - mix Bezerk and Adventure and you get this game. This was the last game released for the 2600 in N.America. Uses extra chips in the cartridge to add additional gameplay and depth
Solaris - Space shooter with a lot of depth
Yar's Revenge - Shooter with some fun twists.

Hope the helps!

There is a pretty nice list of newer homebrew carts for the 2600. They arn't cheap, but it's a surefire way to get a game no one else has. See link.
