Hey guys - I just posted a review of the movie Piranha 3D on my Youtube channel (shameless plug: http://www.youtube.com/user/TheGamingPhilosopher) and it got me thinking more about this whole 3D movie craze.

Piranha 3D was actually shot in 2D and then later converted over to 3D. In my opinion, the 3D effect was nil and probably just used as a marketing gimmick to get more people to see the movie. My question is: do you think that the quality of movies will diminish and that movie companies will rely more and more heavily on the 3D nature of the film rather than actually writing a good script and take the time to make an engaging movie?

Well looking at the last 20 or so years... Yep, movies are pretty much junk now.

The whole 3D thing didn't catch on in the early 90's and it won't now for much longer. It's just a cash-grab.
The only thing that pisses me off are the 3D DVD's: rather then having the grey/grey shading, they go back in time to the red/green! WTF?! Everything looks greenish red now and it doesn't work very well either; even thinking about it gives me a headache

My main problem with 3D in Film is that it's not neccessary for any Movie, and not everyone can comfortably and affordably enjoy 3D Cinema in homes, some can't even in theater due to eye problems. In all honesty, i went out to see Avatar in 3D, and while it looked mind blowing, the 3D didn't do much for me at all. It just seemed very layered, it almost looked like the characters and other stuff were cardboard cut-outs at times. When it apears that depth on an object in the movie's three-dimensional world seems evident, I'm convinced but simply layered 2D makes it look worse IMO.

Personally I have no problems what so ever with seeing 3D, don't have to wear standard glasses, never get nausceous, and never have any problems with my eyes being strained. So, this makes me excited for the future of 3D. I think Nintendo is taking a massive leap in the right direction with the 3DS.

Let's focus on what it does for film (it will be a movie player):
-3D can be turned off for any who don't want it
-3D can be adjusted for each individual person to find their sweet spot
-No glasses neccessary for 3D image, so no darkening of the picture, paying for glasses, losing glasses, having them dig into your head, and no looking dumb

3DS may not be the future of Film and Gaming, but it's the future of 3D technology.

I've always thought that 3D is a gimmick. The effects are decent, but I don't think that it justifies higher ticket prices. Like CGI, I think some film studios will use 3D as a crutch and filmmakers will rely more on that rather than what's more important, like good storytelling.

I only see two benefits to this new wave of 3D movies; a gimmick to get people back in the theaters, and as a way to combat bootlegging. I can't imagine a 3D movie would look good when filmed on a camcorder.
