To Mod or not to Mod... is that a question?; An open discussion about modding systems, and your opinions about it.

I am interested in opinions regarding modding systems in general. There are many YouTubers out there (lukemorse1, alecjahn, etc...) who post vids outlining different mods that can be done to various systems (i.e. region mods, A/V output mods, custom enclosures, etc).

A collector may look differently at a modded system because it has been altered from it's original state; however, a game enthusiast may look favorably upon a modded system because it's easier to hook up to modern televisions, can play import games, etc...

As an engineer and a life long tinkerer, I love resurrecting dead systems, modding old systems, and even being creative/artistic with some of my mods (i.e. I once built a computer in a Jawa Sandcrawler for a buddy, modded an old Genesis 3 into a Joystick controller, and even created a wireless N64 controller to work with my Wii - playin Mario Kart 64 with a Wiimote just seemed wrong!).

This was a discussion my friends and I recently had, and was just curious what the opinions here would be.

Sega Does What Nintendon't

I have many modded consoles! I mod my stuff for import purposes and to play fan translated games.

It is worth getting a modded PS1 just to play the fan translated Policenauts and Persona 2 innocent sin!

Well, if the collector begs you not to ruin a perfectly good system, keep a nice unmodded system and then find a knarly sun-faded/scratched up system and mod the stuffings out of it :P I just picked up a spare sun-faded SNES at a Goodwill this morning for that purpose :)

Nice, I never knew there were xlated games for the PS1! Only ones I knew about were for Sega CD (Snatcher), Turbo Grafx (Y's 4), and SNES (many!).

Oh, and by the way, your signature pic is a where's waldo for traps!

I say keep a pristine console as it was from the manufacturer. If there's an old, cruddy condition SNES with sun fading or the like, then go ahead and mod that, and keep the pristine one in its original form. So buy two of the system :D

Right now there is a SuperGrafx on eBay with a VGA port on the front of it. I would buy that for like $50 just to have the system, and play the games. Later I would buy one in good shape for the collection and just never use it.

I agree. I would only mod a system that is either already in bad shape or readily abundant. For example, I must see 8 model 2 genesis' for sale a week. I would mod one of them no problem. Or modding a controller or cable that is part of the system. However my Model 3 genesis, and my top loader NES. They are a lot harder to find. I wouldn't do more than clean up those systems. That's all just me, I know some people that do, but when I see something with a little rarity getting cut up I cringe a little even if the final product looks great.

well I would never buy a system to have as an investment, so modding one wouldn't bother me from that standpoint. However the purist in me would rather have the system original. I have done some mods on my extra systems though.
