yeah, downloading now! I'll edit this post with my thoughts when I finish listening!

Edit: awesome episode guys! A lot of good tips for collecting video games, I use craigslist regularly...I find it a little odd going to yard sales though, plus it seems like everytime I do go around to yard sales I find nothing. Hey Pete that sucks about your 3DO man, especially considering the cost of those things on average is about $70 to $120, any chance of fixing it?

Anyways guys, keep up the good work and I'll keep listening!

Hey guys,

Dean from the office here again – writing about another great installment of All Gen Gamers. Believe it or not, I’m still inputting the same data and working off the same spreadsheets as last week….soooo tedious. So again - thanks so much for making yet another lengthy podcast to help me through the day.

When I put the past month into perspective, this has got to be my favorite episode so far. Kudos to all of you for putting together such an entertaining and informative piece. Living in a smaller town here in Canada, there isn’t really much option in terms of Thrift Stores or Pawn Shops, but garage/yard sales are definitely plentiful. Most recently, I was walking to the office one morning, and the local retirement home was having an extremely small yard sale. I was running late for work, but decided to take my chances and stop anyway. At first glance, it was all junk. Ancient cookbooks, smoke-stained pottery, coverless books and a whole lot of weird trinkets that I wouldn’t even know how to use. I didn’t expect much more, so I turned to leave, when a familiar mustachio’d plumber caught my eye. I quickly ran over to the tree where there were a pile of old stuff animals. Amongst those was an old Mario Christmas Stocking, I’m guessing from the late 80’s or early 90’s. The tag was gone, but aside from that, the condition was great. I purchased it for $2.00, and it has been hanging amongst my collection ever since (after a soft-wash of course).

Here is a photo of mine:
http://www.videogamecollectors.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=350930&g2_serialNumber=2

Just goes to show that you never know what you’ll find – so make an effort to check these out every chance you get, regardless of how unlikely the odds may be.

Also, a big thanks to Chuck and John for their efforts in putting together the Portland Classic Gaming Expo. These types of events really help the gaming community grow, and become more widely recognized. Great work guys!

Pete – sorry to hear about the untimely failure of your 3DO. I’ve lost quite a few consoles over the years due to component failure, and know that it can definitely be frustrating. In fact (I know this is starting to run off on a different tangent, but…), just the other week, I purchased a link-cable to transfer all data from my PS1 and PS2 Memory Cards to my PS3 (just for extra backup). Well, this cord ended up somehow ‘reformatting’ my card, so my 100% files of Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX, as well as my Xenosaga saves and Gran Turismo 3 saves were lost. Extremely frustrating to say the least. Best of luck trying to repair it though! Be sure to let us know how that goes.

Johnny – not really related to this episode, but just wanted to send out a quick “thanks” for all your mentioning of the “Ys” series over the past 4 episodes. I became curious as to why you liked them so much, so I decided to try “Ys: Book 1 and 2”. Definitely don’t regret it. Although certainly not up to par with today’s graphics and gameplay, I can see why it was so great for its time. I’ve just beat both (which surprisingly tied together extremely well) – and am excited to start on Ys 3 (gotta finish the PS2 title Beyond Good and Evil first – and get 100% Trophy completion in Bionic Commando). So ya, ‘thank you’ for introducing this new franchise to me.

Anyways, great job as always! Looking forward to next Wednesday morning for another great episode of All Gen Gamers!

PS: You guys just recently got a pretty good shout-out by John Jacobson of “Video Game Outsiders”, so I’d expect a lot of traffic to be heading your way over the next week or so.

Thanks guys!!!
Dean

Excellent episode, as usual, guys!

A few buzz items:

@ I've kinda lost track of the value of the Stadium events carts. It seems to have calmed down significantly since all the hype surounding the multi-thousand dollar auctions of not so long ago. What I find amusing is people paying over $100 for the PAL version, which is certainly not the same level of rarity.

@ The talk about the Starwars AT-AT walker reminded me of this video.

@ Pete Dorr: you just gained 1 awesome point for using a Commodore 1084s for classic gaming :D Do you use the RGB video input port?

@ On the MMO addiction front, there is an interesting documentary on this is called "Second Skin." It really does ruin some people's lives.

Which version of 3 are you playing? I cannot strongly recommend enough Ys Oath in Felghana. It takes the heart and soul of 3 and gives it a whole new wonderful life. I played the junk out of Ys III on the SNES years ago and playing through Oath was better than re-living my fond memories, it added a whole other level of awesome to it. I've only played the PC version, but hopefully the PSP version will deliver the same juicy goodness.

Another great episode!

I am a big fan of checking out thrift-stores and yardsales. You never know what will turn up. Just last week I got a copy of mario kart double dash for $3 at a yard sale (not an amazing find but it still made my day).

My best find has I got around $200 worth of games for $10. Some of the better things in that find were Final Fantasy 3 for $0.50 and a rob the robot for $0.50.

Thanks guys, yeah the audio in this episode took a dump, but honestly the content was worth it! 5 people on a group call is bound to have some problems anyway, but as long as you all still enjoyed listening is all that matters. I have included links to both of our guests youtube pages in the "Episodes" section of the website.

I am about halfway through episode 4 podcast. You guys give some really good tips on collecting. I have already been looking for classic games and consoles at garage sales.

The first garage sale with classic games in mind i found a box with a Genesis and 8 Genesis games,2 NES games 2 three button controllers,an NES controller,NES power supply and NES RF unit. I was so stoked when the guy said he would take five dollars for the entire box. Sadly my model 1 Genesis stoppled working. I am guessing it was the cheap after market power supply i bought for it. I have made a You Tube video asking what i should do to fix the problem. My You Tube screen name is Pearljammer07. I get alot of crap for that screen name.

The question about game addiction really was on point!
(Online RPGS)
I'm right with Johnny on Final Fantasy 11. I played that game for about two years. In the beginning, it was had some really magical moments. The sence of adventure got lost to me as I got to higher levels. I stopped playing when it became more about possessions, items, and status. Sometimes, I felt like I was playing a virtual version of "Keeping up with the Jones's."

Don't worry, the PSP port was ported by Falcom themselves, so it's bound to be faithful to its source material.

Episode 4 was great and all, but to be honest, not really my type of thing (and to no fault of you guys). I mean, I love collecting, and the beginning part where the guests talked about their collections was good, but there are little to no yard sales over here, so yeah....Still, it was all quality stuff.

Oh, and BTW, the N64 controller was released before the NiGHTS Sega Saturn 3D Controller. Look at these;

N64 Release Date- June 23, 1996

NiGHTS Release Date- July 5, 1996

Sorry, NiGHTS, but the N64 did indeed have the first 3D controller.

I'm just over halfway through it, and at the point where you guys are talking about yardsales and how to find them. I don't know if it gets mentioned later on, but most newspapers have ads in the classifieds for yard sales that are going on. And the great thing about that is you can usually check your local newspapers classified ads online!

The episode of Intervention that Pete mentions (about the guy addicted to gaming) is on Hulu for free. It's sad, but worth a watch.

Great episode! Those guys are hardcore collectors to try to get complete on anything! I only collect games that are either based on nostalgia or just because I remember it was a great game. I just got an N64 the other day because I remember not having one, but yet everyone else had one around me. I might try to go to a goodwill store tomorrow and look around.

Another awesome episode, guys. My morning here at work totally flew by! It was really interesting and informative. I'm not a big collector, but I always wondered how you guys with these huge collections got your hands on all this stuff.

Where I am in Canada (Halifax, NS) I hit the occasional yard sale up and I've never seen anything even close to worthwhile - just lots of old lady's vases, haha. There are a few flea markets that are worth the trip, though, and I get some stuff there.

Pete - Do you think it's the lens on your 3DO? If the access light is coming on, but you're not seeing any picture it might not be reading the games properly? Might be worth looking into a method for cleaning the CD lens.

On FF11, 14 and MMOs, I have never been able to get into these games. I think it's because everyone else I know that plays them puts in so much time and I just can't do it. I got FF11 when it first came out, played it for like 3 months and stopped. I hate having to get into parties for everything. I tried WoW for the better part of a few years - off and on - and I liked the gameplay a little more, but I still couldn't get into it. I had a level 44, I think.

I'm really excited for FF14, though, and I'm hoping I get into it. I pretty much know I won't get addicted, but it'd be fun to try and MMO that I actually wanted to invest some time in.

Anyway guys, I think I've typed too much here. Awesome stuff as always!

Aw, it's quite a shame that from the first episode to this I can't listen to it despite that I really wanna. I haven't commented yet because I thought the quality will get better from one episode to another, but it didn't.

Now don't get me wrong, I have comparisons, and I know you're all going through Skype (which is a shame in its own because there are much better VOIP programs out there). I only wholly went through the episode with Luke because I really like the man although he doesn't know me :) and I really wanted to know what he's got to say.

I don't know, for example Pete can be heard perfectly, in most times Johnny too, Gamester (with really few interruptions) as well, but the guests are hardly heard at all and honestly guys, after a half an hour or so it becomes a pain to listen. And you don't want that, I'm sure.

I listen to all kinds of retro podcasts, Retronauts for example, and I realise they just get all the people in one room and record and that it's not really possible in your case. But it's so hard to listen to your podcasts, guys... I really want to because I love your channels and all, but I just can't. It hurts the ears. Sorry.

Pete, HCG, and gamester all have the same mics if im not mistaken as they have announced in the podcasts. However anytime you bring in a new guest over skype to the show they are not gonna have these same mics so they may have decent or not so decent mics. One of the guys was a little harder to hear but after i turned the volume up there was no problem. I hope and assume the majority of people enjoy the podcast and dont nitpick on simple things.

Sorry to hear that Lorskel, since our show is centric around or weekly guests its really hard to set up calls without skype since so many people already have and use it and asking them to buy/dl another voice program is not that convenient. Episode 4 did have a weird audio issue that I noticed right off the bat, if sounded muddled in some parts...I think it was due to one of our guests. BOTH of them did not wear headsets and just used mics/pc speakers so it may have been some kinda weird feedback issue. When i listened back on the show I was able to hear everything just fine with/without a headset however.

To be completely honest, I don't notice much of an inconvenience with the audio. Everything seems fairly clear, and aside from a couple hiccups and crackles here and there, the dialogue can be heard perfectly.

In my opinion, a few adjustments on the volume controls now and again is a small price to pay to be able to listen to these three amazing hosts and the Podcast's consistently incredible guest appearances.
