So, I started using eBay recently thanks to a friend who let me use his PayPal account. I'd give him the money, and he'd deposit the money in his band account, then use it to pay for my purchase. This is great and all, but I have been doing a lot of bidding lately, and I don't want to keep bothering him with all of it. So, I want to know if there is a way to get money to a PayPal account through something such as buying a card in a store, then entering a code on the site to get the money to your account? I just don't feel comfortable giving them my info and whatnot. |

I know that Paypal does offer gift cards, which I have seen on sale in Best Buy and a local drug store, but you cannot use a Paypal account without at least linking up a bank account. You don't need a credit card, but the bank account is a must since you would need to transfer money if someone pays you through Paypal. Another option, if you qualify for it, is a Paypal credit card that is issued through Visa. I know a few people who have this and they say that it makes using Paypal to purchase items remarkably easy. Edited by browland1, Aug 31 2010, 10:32 AM.

And there is also no way to pay on eBay? Or is that up to the seller? |

The vast majority of sellers on eBay prefer Paypal and many will only accept that for their auctions, however there are some who have their own checkout and payment systems. In those cases, you would be directed to their website and you would need to use a credit card, however you don't get the buyer protection that Paypal would offer. Some sellers will also accept checks and money orders, but I am seeing that less and less nowadays. In terms of security and reliability, Paypal is your best bet and you will probably need to use it at some point if you want to buy from eBay. The seller never gets your banking or credit card information and you do have some insurance in case you get screwed by a scammer. |

As browland said, almost nobody still accepts anything other than paypal, and it's much safer than sending a money order or check in the mail. A paypal account is definitely worth having, as there are more and more sites all the time that accept it as a way of paying. If your skeptical about it, I can tell you I've used it hundreds and hundreds of times, and only one time did I not receive something I paid for, and in that case paypal refunded me the money I lost. |

I've used Paypal hundreds of times myself over the pasy 10 years and I have only had a problem once; a seller didn't send a book I ordered and Paypal promptly refunded my money. I generally deal with reputable sellers who have good feedback, which mitigates the risk somewhat. eBay also owns Paypal, so your buying experience will be a million times easier if you just get your own account. The only caveat is that Paypal charges fees if you are a seller, so be mindful of this if you intend to list any items. They take a flat fee plus a percentage of the money you get, which has gone up dramatically since I started using eBay years back. |

If you're still having second thoughts, just open another bank account that is used for nothing else but paypal. That's what I did. |
