I was reading that same article on another website. I'm glad nintendo is taking steps towards making pirated games and downloaded games worthless. Far too many people download games instead of supporting the people that made them. |

The R4 chips are amazingly rampant. I didn't realize that it was as bad as it is. I knew that the PSP is having lots of problems with pirating but the DS seemed a lot more solid. I can't blame Nintendo for taking the steps that they have to try and protect their products and the other companies that are producing for them. |

I'm tired of these flash carts. You can't go on a Nintendo DS collection video without idiots repeating. "yur s0 stupid buy n r4 get free gamez" I want to buy games, NOT STEAL THEM. It's much more satisfying looking at your shelf of video game cases and boxes, than to see a little flash cart lying next to your bed on a shelf.. BUY YOUR GAMES. |

Yeah, my DS collection wouldn't be as awesome if it was just a bunch of files on a single flash cart, although I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of future handhelds having DS Collections like have of old Genesis & Atari games. To think that future compilation packs will have DS games in them like old Atari packs is awesome. I'll be sure to get those when they come out. |

I commend Nintendo for trying to stop losers from Pirating their games. Though, I fear this won't stop a lot of Piraters because: A. This only effects DSi ad DSi XL owners B. If you have a DSi/DSi XL, you're never forced to update your firmware unless you use the DSi Shop (I beleive) C. This isn't a complete fix for all flashcards So Pirates can work around this rather easily, and this doesn't exactly bring an end to it all, but it's just about the best Nintendo can do at this point. Listen Piraters of Modern games: Stop it... Stop it... No... No. |

Guys (and gals?), flashcards aren't made for the sole purpose of pirating DS ROMs. Many, many people who own flashcards do not condone piracy, and in fact shun it. Flashcards can be used for homebrew, media players, and retro emulators. Nintendo gives you the black and white picture of "flashcards are bad, only bad people use flashcards," when it isn't true. Nintendo doesn't account for the thousands who download a game and buy it after because they want to spend their money on games wisely and would much rather "try before you buy." It IS against copyright, however, companies do dozens of other things that harm us to bring them huge profits. I own a flashcard, and I use it for playing music, playing NES, SNES, GC, and GBA games I'll NEVER be able to get a hold of. I don't use it for NDS ROMs anymore. When I first bought a flashcard I did, but over time I became increasingly guilty of theft, so I eventually deleted everything. I feel much better for it. With all of this said, Nintendo did almost nothing in terms of helping themselves out. The flashcard that I own took the team a couple of hours to bypass the protection. Nintendo didn't do much. I assume REAL efforts are going to the 3DS, which I'm happy about.

You would already be breaking the law in a way since Nintendo has released a very large number of "roms" for sale on the Virtual Console. Then it could be considered that you are stealing from them because they are for sale and you aren't paying for them. Therefore Nintendo and the other companies are losing money because you play them on an emulator on your DS. The same could be said of that. I'm not trying to condone you or anything but that argument you've stated just doesn't make sense since you aren't paying for content still on your DS that is available for sale in another fashion. So they could hold that case against you anyways. You are correct in saying that there are a lot of try before you buy gamers, but honestly how many of them do you know? I know that the ratio of people using R4 type carts are not in fact ever purchasing the games later down the road. Most people just don't care to purchase something they they get for free no matter how much they like it. Nintendo could probably have taken better measures to control the DS and such but honestly there are always people looking for ways to crack codes for electronic devices and such. There are lots of people who are incredibly intelligent and just know how to "outsmart" a big company and just want to prove that they can. |

Well, every video game in existence is still under copyright (in the United States, other countries have sane copyright laws), so no matter what I'd be breaking the law by having a ROM I do not own and did not dump myself. For the record, I have purchased all the ROMs I wanted to buy from the shop, but Nintendo has yet to release quite a few others that I want. In my opinion, any product not being sold by a company (discontinued, or it is far out of date with current technology) should be subject to public domain, since the company itself wouldn't be able to make a profit anyway. However, I realize how much of a danger that would be to their sales, as people would just wait for their products to be out of date. My point was that the potential buyer was going to delete the ROM after demoing. As far as I've read on the subject, which may be from incorrect sources, people are allowed a twenty-four hour test period. Personally? None. I have seen people make the claim though, and I give them the benefit of the doubt. I think everyone deserves that. Also, there's no way I'd be able to argue that the ratio is a lot more than what people may think, because I'd be a liar. Out of the hundreds of thousands of pirates out there (or possibly millions?), I bet, at the most, forty-five thousand people only try before they buy. I agree. No arguments there. The emulator problem is a hard topic to argue. I'm sure there are people even here that use emulators for games that they know they won't be able to get a hold of. It would be kinda hard for me personally to buy a Super Famicom, all SF Fire Emblem games, and read a script while I play each game. That doesn't make the crime inexcusable, but I do think that's a lot pettier than someone who steals Wii, DS, Xbox360, or PS3 games. Edited by MGS Metal Gear Solid, Sep 13 2010, 02:23 PM.

This may be solved in a different way by nintendo allowing a download demo of 3ds games. You can't get the full experience of them any other way, not in a written review, online, or a tv commercial, so I'm thinking there might be a lot more demos for 3ds games as it's the best way to showcase the game, short of going to a gamestop and see for yourself at a kiosk. It won't help with the pirates, but for those few people out there that claim they only emulate to test out a game before they buy it, it may stop these people from doing so. |

Yeah, I really hope they have 3DS demos. They're putting DS demos on the Nintendo Wii channel now (which I really really love). I hope they do this for 3DS as well. Better than deciding based on videos on youtube anyway. |

The people who are saying they download DS games onto a flash cart just to "test before the buy it" are usually completely lying, and never end up buying the game. |
