Strip the Flesh, salt the wound!

Rumor has it, Sony is making an adapter that makes you play PS2 games on your PS3.

At the moment it is only at patent stage, but it is certainly a lot more than just a rumour.

I'm finding it harder and harder to believe that Sony respects their customers in any way, shape or form.

An adaptor, more hardware to simulate other hardware... Surely this could have been done via software emulation?

The timing is kinda off as well, considering theres alot of gossip about the PS Jailbreak being able to emulate PS2 and PSP games. What's next Sony, another hardware adaptor to emulate your PSP titles? Bah!

The PS2 software emulation which was included on the original PS3 60GB model was not fit for the purpose. It did work for some games, but not others and for a lot of games it was a total glitch-fest! (I'm looking at you GTA San Andreas!!!)

I can't help but think there are reasons for not pursuing the software route of emulation. I'll guess we'll see what the PS3 Jailbreak software has to offer for proof of concept.

Anyone know what the emulation software is like on the XBOX 360? I only tried it out once when I first bought my XBOX 360 and worked for around 50% of the original XBOX titles I had.

Does the newer slim XBOX 360 still retain emulation software?

These aren't the droids we're looking for.

Found some spy photos as proof! Think they're from China or something.

But seriously, I'm on the fence when it comes to this topic; it would be nice to have a backwards compatable PS3, but unless Sony can offer an add-on that's far below $100 (the PS2's current price), it just wouldn't be worth it. And it probably wouldn't be worth it for anyone who already owns a PS2 =/

Anyways, I figure this is just Sony jumping on an idea to cover their butt; these companies files patents like this all the time.

(btw, the above picture was totally for good fun; no malice or crotchetiness was intended)

God, I'd LOVE that actually. It's what I want. Something that lets me play my PSP games on the big screen with a PS3 controller.

The original 60g PS3 didn't have software emulation. It had an actual PS2 emotion engine cpu inside of it and is why Sony lost a fortune on them even prior to the 1st gen BR drives breaking down. The software emulation was in the first 80G PS3 prior to the 40G/80G models that had no B/C.

You're absolutely right. If they make it for like...40-50 dollars, It'd be nice to have but if it goes for like 70-80, it'd be a BIG mistake.

Erm... The launch model (I have one) PAL 60GB version does have software emulation for running PS2 games.

Check here for PS3 model information.

It's under the Model comparison heading.

There are different/delayed launch times/dates around the world. This is often the case with big hardware launches as the logistics are incredible for simultaneous world wide releases. So, there are different launch dates for different territories.

Let me alter my statement so that it doesn't confuse you...

The PAL 60GB launch model does emulate the PlayStation 2 hardware.

Here is a map of PAL, NTSC and SECAM territories. (America is on the left) :P

Indeed you are right on that. The problem is that one territory's model isn't considered a launch model if it was based on a newer revision of a prior release. The PAL version of the machine is actually identical to the 80G NTSC model we got here prior to the release of the 40/80G units except ofc a) you got a pal output and b) you got the last stock of 60g hard disks leftovers.

That would make it a 2nd revision PS3. But the Launch model PS3, the 20/60 kits had the PS2 ware inside... and that led to its overall price problem for Sony as well as overheating the BR electronics which is why they have the highest failure rates. And Sony hated to fix them.

Fair point, I didn't think of it like that.

It really doesn't matter anyways bediger. It is all semantics at the end of the day. There is a true B/C PS3 and there is a true hybrid hw/sw B/C PS3. You guys got the crappy version, while we got the good version that broke down more than the crappy version.

lose / lose here for people that are out of warranty.
