I'd love to have a huge retro gaming collection like gamerster81, but let's just face it, it's never going to happen. So I came up with this awesome idea that would make emulating consoles more genuine and would instantly give you one massive gaming library. Imagine a stand-alone console that was dedicated to emulators, had 4 USB ports for controllers. You could buy any retro console gamepad or use a converter. When you turn the system on you had a menu where you choose if you wanted to play Atari, NES, SNES, Sega Genesis etc.. Came with every game (rom) built in. Since roms are only a couple MB (some even less) you could put every game imaginable on a 8GB harddrive... Playing this console on a TV compared to a PC monitor would be more genuine and you wouldn't have to waste time turning on/off your computer, finding emulators or roms (even though it's really easy), and more importantly you'd have a giant game library with 1000's of games! Even though if someone was to do this and sell it commercially they'd prob get sued by all these companies, but none-the-less it would be an awesome piece of hardware! Give me some feedback on what you think and how you could go about building something like this yourself at home.. |

That unfortunately never going to happen. First of all it is illegal to put those roms, you can have a rome if You got a orginal cadrige/cd or other medium in your collection. Secondary the hardware, I can imagine a mini pc board and linux installed on that caind of machine, but plugin and handeling the various controlerss will be to expensive to implement. You can for example use some caind of dedicated controler for this console, but there is a question if one univwersal controler will be good (you know if something is for everything ... it's realy for nothing). Making the long story short it will never happen becous the copyright and other legal issues and hardware/software problems. |

This would be good if you paid for them and downloaded them like a huge virtual console system. I'm figuring for certain licensing or trademark issues or some other stuff, that this would be difficult to achieve. |

Couldn't the Dreamcast run some emulators? That's basically your idea of a emulator system right there. |

Dreamcast is about as close as you'll get. It would play burned games and also be able to run emulators on it. The original xbox is also pretty decent for emulation if you install a bigger hard drive + mod chip. PSP & DS are also very good emulation consoles. |

I have to disagree... cause I own the ultimate game-machine . I did build a PC with a Thermaltake LANBOX chassis (cause I wanted a console style look) , a core-duo 8500 processor overclocked to 3650 MHZ, 4GB of RAM, NVIDIA 8800 GT overclocked Video Card, 5 TB of Hard disk Space (3 Hard disks) and over 14 Fans ! (and it's still quiet ). And a lot of Gamepad and Joysticks adapters. And now for the best part: the Game menu is a custom made Gameex Frontend and I have near every Arcade machines, Pinballs, Console and Computers from the past till today emulated (gamecube and PS2 included), with, in near all systems, a complete disc or rom set. except in some cases: PS2: over 550 disc images, PS1: near 400... You don't have to insert any discs, cause with the disc images it's all automatic: You select a game and if you want to return to the game-menu you only have to press the keyboard "exit" key. And for a complete system I wanted old and new PC games too, therefore I have over 1500 old (till year 1999), and 750 new (from 2000 till today) Games installed. It taked near 2 Years to configure the system and a lot of work, but I'm very happy with the results. |

Just like Arcadeheaven said the PC is the way to go for this. I just got through putting my new control panel in my cabinet this weekend. and all you have to do is run a front end to have it very nice looking with no visible signs of it being a PC. I am using Hyperspin and only have about 30 games loaded on mine so far because like Arcadeheaven said its time consuming but well worth it in the long run. I try to add at least one game every morning after I get home from work. |

Original Xbox is incredibly cheap, very easy to mod and games just look amazing on it. Dreamcast isn't the best for emulation, it can just about handle Super Mario World and nothing more really. |

I would go pc myself, its generally really easy to set up. PC's are pretty cheap too, ones that run console emulators anyway. With mame it really depends on the game. Gets a bit complicated if your trying to make the pc boot up right into the emulators though. I personally dont mind having to click and access my emulators though.

Um... What? It doesn't handle GBA, or Neo-Geo Pocket Color very well, but it emulates other games beautifully. Hell, I play Link to the Past, with no lag at all! |

As others have said PC is by far the best place for emulation. It's also got support for any controller type you can imagine. But if you're looking for something to play while not at your PC I would recommend the PSP. It's got superb emulators for many consoles and runs games upto the PS1 excellently. |

Yeah, there are quite a few SNES games which do run very well, but the majority do chug. If you just want to play Master System, Megadrive or NES games then it is pretty much flawless and simple. |

Im one of those few that likes the N64 pad though, most of the games dont feel the same without it. Gonna have to get mine chipped, my GF has one but its rarely switched on.

I use my old desktop (runs Windows XP just barely) to emulate my NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, and Game Boy games. That's about the closest you'd get to an "emulator console." It will never happen. Emulators are a legal gray area, and pirating is at an all time high. |
