Places like Value Village and other thrift stores and 2nd hand stores can be great places to pick up some of the more common hardware and games to start your collections. I'm JUST starting out my hardware and games collection so basically I have nothing at this point. If there you are looking to get some of the more common stuff like a NES, SNES, N64, Genesis etc etc and some of the more popular games for these consoles then thrift stores can be a great place to get started. I picked up a like new N64 for 15 bucks a few months back. And I just picked up Star Fox 64 for about 3 bucks as well. Still looking for a NES and SNES in good condition.

And of course there is the rare time when you might find a real rare jem there too!

I always frequent second hand shops. The majority of the time, there isn't a good deal. But every now and then i come across something... i got my boxed snes sysem (minus mario all-stars) for £5 - it is definitely worth it checking them out. You never know what you'll come across

I agree. You might get disappointed most of the time but you never know! When you find a good deal it all seems to be worth it. People at these places rarely seem to know the value of what they're selling.

This is true on different levels.

I've frequented shops that sold £60+ games for £1.

Aaaand others, that'll try and sell crap like Fifa '06 on PS2 for £10.

I have a few towns that I'll visit once a month, just trawl through their cashconverters, charity shops etc, had some excellent bargains.

If you're just starting a collection, I'd try to make it to some flea markets or garage sales, though the weather is turning colder so they won't be back in full swing until the spring/summer. Most vendors really want to get rid of their stuff, unless they're dedicated game re-sellers, so a lot of times you can bargain them into selling you a lot of games for a decent price instead of buying them one-by-one at thrift stores who won't bargain prices.

I go to the Goodwills and Flea markets as much as I can. Most of the time I leave empty handed, but sometimes you find treasures!
