Apple blogs as of late have been giving the iOS platform devices credit for "killing" the Nintendo DS, citing declining DS hardware sales, and have even claimed that the success of the iPod has caused Nintendo to "fire" Cammie Dunnaway as they scramble hopelessly to salvage the plummeting popularity of their underpowered, gimmicky childs toy of a system that no one in their right mind would even consider taking seriously as a platform for playing games. While iPod fans in Apple communities take credit for iOS having supposedly forced Nintendo's presence in the portable gaming market to the brink of irrelevancy, I suppose it would be curmudgeonly to spoil their fun by reminding them that the Nintendo DS is a six year old lame duck platform in the waning months of its lifespan which has come as close to total market saturation as any electronic device could reasonably hope to achieve. That's so lame... I've got an iPhone, and I've got plenty of games on it as well. But the DS has braught us games that the iPhone simply would not be able to deliver... While there are a ton of people stating that the iPhone does handle HardCore gaming, I think they have to remember that it is just a phone, and it was not ment to be a gaming device, and therefore there are no games that match the standard of the Nintendo DS games. |

Plants VS Zombies is an insanely good game for the iphone. I think i've probably played it more than any game i've got on my DS. |

Which started out as a PC game and is going to be on the DS in the future as well. I think that the iphone isn't a serious gamers choice for a gaming platform. It's more a casual game crowd that buys stuff for it and the games are really cheap. You don't usually go into the iphone/pad/pod store looking for something to grab your attention for 20 hours or more. People just buy some simple games that are quick, cheap and fun. Nothing with some serious depth. Throw in the fact that it's a phone and has other applications and NOT just a gaming system then it makes a difference. I personally could care less about anything that apple releases or any company decides to put on the iphone as I will never purchase what they have to offer. Edited by sushi_b, Sep 22 2010, 09:43 AM.

That's a pretty grand claim from Apple, but that's nothing new. The decline in DS sales can be more attributed to the upcoming release of the 3DS rather than stiff competition from Apple. Don't get me wrong, I love my iTouch, but I would never think of it as a substitute for my DS. |

DS already sold more than 130+ million unit. Nintendo drop in sales is due to the fact most people already own a DS. |

This is funny. It's not the fact that the ds has been out for 6 years, and it's not the fact the the 3ds is coming out. It's the iPhone that's the cause. Maybe the iPhone is also the cause of the dinosaurs all being dead. |

The iphone combined with the ipod Touch and the ipad (they're all very similar products) are selling very well compared to the DS and PSP. I'm not really sure what's selling the most units, but I'd guess that the itouches are selling the most. But that in no way makes it the superior and the most popular handheld gaming machine this gen. That's like saying that the PC has killed the Xbox 360 in gaming because more people own a PC. Some people buy a PC for gaming, but I'd say at least 50% of PC owners didn't buy one with gaming in mind. It's the same way with the itouches: some buy one for gaming, some get very hardcore with gaming on them, but most people use them almost exclusively as media players. |
