Nintendo has announced plans to release a shiny red iteration of the Wii.

It's Mario Red, to be specific, and it's being launched to celebrate the 25th birthday of Super Mario Bros.

A Japanese release date has been set for 11th November, according to Kotaku. The price tag is ¥20,000 (around £150).

For that you get the red console and a matching Wii Remote Plus - that'd be the new controller which has MotionPlus functionality built-in, and which is launching in Japan on the same date. The machine also comes with Super Mario Bros. pre-installed.

Nintendo has yet to announce whether there are any plans to release the red Wii in Europe.

Looks pretty darn slick. Would love to see this thing get a world wide release. For some reason Nintendo has not announced anything at all for a North American release to celebrate the 25th year of Mario. Japan gets this and the Allstars re-release for Wii. Europe gets the Wii All stars game as well. North America has had no such announcements. Hopefully that changes.

Sega Does What Nintendon't

I will be one sad panda if Nintendo don't release the Super Mario Collection Pack in North America.

I will probably pre-order the Japanese version of the Super Mario Collection Pack just for the book and soundtrack.

Well now I have an excuse to get a Japanese Wii. Don't know anyone else who has one but Pete. Maybe he can give us some recommendations on his channel.

I'm probably going to pick the 25th Anniversary Wii tomorrow morning, and I'll DEFINITELY be picking up Super Mario All-Stars: Limited Edition when it comes out, especially at $29.99!

The next month or so is going to be pretty big for me, especially when you throw Donkey Kong Country Returns and Epic Mickey into the mix :P

That's cool! Are the games in the slipcovers or real cases? And what's with the black cord coming out of the Wii Remote?

Unfortunately, the games came in slipcovers (ala Wii Sports). That was the biggest annoyance for me, and, as stupid as it sounds, I'll probably eventually buy a retail copy of New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Other than the whole slipcover thing, it's a great package, and the red looks really slick on both the Wii and the controller/nunchuk!

And the black cord is from my gold classic controller pro; I was playing GoldenEye 007 at the time :P

I think it's the best value out of the three Wii packages, since New Super Mario Bros. is probably more of a "real" game than Wii Sports Resort, though I guess that's arguable. If you already have a Wii, I don't think it's worth the upgrade, but for those who have held out this long without a Wii (like myself), I'd say go for it now while you can, because it probably won't be around long.

I've been enjoying the heck out of Mario Galaxy and just picked up Metroid Prime Trilogy today.

I'm not sure if anyone feels this way, but I'm kind of tired of Nintendo releasing new wiis in different colors. I mean, the red does look pretty cool. But remember, it's still a wii. It still does the same thing as any other wii. The color of the wii doesn't matter. But, I have to say, I am interested in seeing this.
